Review brief: Castings 34 Private Cover girl Wanda Curtis might be the most obvious attraction in this edition of Pierre Woodman's interview and audition series, but dig deeper for some fascinating features and perhaps the most heart-breaking of Woodman's always controversial initiations Maryline First for shaving is an attractive Russian blonde, who gives her name as Elena, interviewed in the astonishingly far-flung location of Vladivostok! This 25-year-old is disenchanted with her modelling school, as it promises much but delivers little, so she is keen to try out porn but is worried that she isn't up to the task. I think the highly expressive young lady is telling a few porky pies here amid some quite extraordinary comments.

As always, the roughly-shot casting interviews are backed up with coverage of photo shoots and sex scenes from Private productions as the girls make their first big steps in this wonderful world of porn Christiane De Nerville Christiane, AKA Julia Swen or Nannes Beaumont, is a long legged blonde with a notable sparkle in her eye. She does rather appeal to me even if she isn't an absolute classical beauty. Maybe it's her forthright but pleasant manner, her good English and her honest appraisal of the magazines she has to peruse to get an idea of Pierre's work.

Review brief: Castings 30 Private The continuing adventures of Pierre Woodman in the land of gorgeous girls brings another batch of interviews and sex scenes to inform, entertain, titillate and provoke. The format is as usual - castings shot in a very basic way are followed by either on-set coverage of a shoot or a sex scene chosen to highlight the specific performer. Chanonne This tall, slender brunette sports a short cropped cut and has already done "kitsch" photos with Jean-Pierre Armand (the mind boggles) and some DP stills for a German photographer, so she's hardly coming to this as the much vaunted virgin. Sadly, when she strips off, it's clear she's had a boob job.

Review brief: Castings 29 Private Travel once more into the world of Woodman, and sample another selection of castings and sex scenes to showcase girls from Hungary to Mexico and Romania to France, each eager (some more than others) to make their first steps in Pornland Anna Maria First up, an auburn haired Romanian lass with a broad, smiling face and a cheerful demeanour who, while not especially attractive to me, has enough charm to make a winning impression through an interview that labours slightly under the weight of cumbersome translation. Review brief: Theatre of Lust Pirate Fetish Machine / Private Maybe I was basing my expectations on unreliable evidence, but I was keen to see Theatre of Lust, if only to find out some more about this Italian female director I'd been hearing about. Susi Medusa Gottardi has already gained a name for shooting some kinky stuff so it's with some disappointment that I must report straight away that Theatre of Lust is yet another example - perhaps unsurprisingly given Private's track record and relatively mainstream market - of fetish style being used to flavour a rather generic porn flick instead of being the focus of the movie. Story Story is the first, and most likely largest, problem with Theatre of Lust.

Review brief: The Fetish Garden Pirate Fetish Machine Let's be clear about what The Fetish Garden offers. In the mode of the worst "theatre workshop" / "I'm a tree" cliché, women in patterned leotards adopt poses in the fantastical surroundings of Barcelona's Parc Guell, one of the most famous creations of Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi. It seems that director J.M. Ponce, with no pun intended, feels the need to bring such influences to bear on this pornographic movie. I'm sure it's not only the devout Gaudi - presently rotating at around 2000rpm in his tomb - who would protest at such a notion. And if I were to tell you that such pretentious conceits are the best thing about this movie? Well, I wouldn't be entirely honest.

Review brief: Private Classics: Private Stories 2 Private After the relative disappointments of my first step in reacquainting myself with Private's magazine series Private Stories, I was keen to find out if my mixture of fond and less favourable memories of the 1995 originals were hopelessly unrealistic. The format is unchanged (though the scenes were originally interspersed with trailers and adverts): short, sharp sex scenes with quick set ups and fast paced sex. Hole In One The old golf course number provides ample scope for double entendre, as a lady golfer's wayward shot ends up in Mike Foster's lap, and his balls end up in her mouth.

Review brief: Private Classics - Private Stories 1 Private My tastes have changed in the interim, but I remember being really delighted at the time to acquire a dodgy tape containing two editions of the Private Stories series. That was in 1996, as I recall. Maybe it's not quite long enough ago to make this rediscovery of old Private material, once thought of insufficient technical quality for DVD but now re-issued, a real nostalgia trip, but it's getting that way. Like the Private Video Magazine series, Private Stories uses the magazine format of several short, self-contained sex scenes packed into a "compact" running time.

Nadine Bronx This Belgian, according to iafd.com, blonde is perhaps a little older and wiser, though sadly less natural, than the usual Woodman "victims". Nadine keeps it flirtatious but cool and calm through interview, though she's quite personable with it. She's a model and stripper, and so she does both: stripping and posing to display her nice body, but fake tits. Clearly happy with exhibitionism and sex, Nadine's best moment is when she cracks a lovely smile and he face flushes as she talks of sex with two guys.

Coralie Contemporary interest in this audition may reflect interest in her more recent work because, unless I am very much mistaken, this brunette French wannabe porn star is none other than Coralie Trinh Thi, director of the controversial French art house movie Baise-moi. Here she sports a slightly gothic look, with strong make up and a tattoo on her butt.

After their arrival at a familiar beautiful house, they meet Nick (Mark Davis) a porn director who invites Toni (to ease my confusion, I'll stick to actors' rather than characters' names - Mark even calls "Bruce" Toni at one point during the movie!) to the set of his latest "big budget" movie. Turning down sex with his good lady wife, who clearly had her eye on Mark, Toni arrives on the set next day. No wonder he's surprised at that "big budget" tag; Mark's production looks like a cheap off-cut from Virtualia. On with the shoot, which provides the first sex scene.

Running time: 1hr 16mins Finally released on DVD, Anal Academy was a historic movie in its time - an early directorial outing for Steve "Ben Dover" Perry, the first feature from Private, and a movie that gained certain notoriety in the UK, where it was shot, among those of us who had to rely on bootleg VHS tapes for our illicit dose of hardcore. I ended up with an unwatchable nth generation copy, so it's interesting to see with digital clarity how Anal Academy has fared some 10 years on (there's some contradiction about dates - the date of shooting is stated as 1992, it's copyrighted 1993). In a quick opening scene, before the titles, pretty brunette Suzzanah encounters a rather ugly chap having a wank (over a Private mag, naturally) in a stable.

Review brief: Castings 4 Bettina - A Star Is Born Private Directed by Pierre Woodman Starring: Bettina, Anita Gyongy, Laura Kat Woman, Rebecca Lord, Sweet Lana, Simone Running time: 2hrs The big feature of this edition of Woodman's casting series is the initiation of Bettina, but there are several other interesting young women ready to try their hand at a career in porn. The early steps in their careers are demonstrated by casting interviews, glimpses from the sets of photo shoots, and the occasional excerpt from Private's features. Rebecca Lord A great way to begin this volume, the first interviewee is French brunette Rebecca, who of course more than made her name on both sides of the Atlantic. Announcing herself as a 20-year-old actress, Rebecca looks really beautiful here, even during the roughly shot casting footage, what with her wonderful smile, pale skin contrasting with dark hair and red lips, and big eyes that grow wider as Pierre asks his rude questions.

Boat Hitch-hiker - Nicole & George Director Tom Herold is a relatively new contributor to Private (he appears to have worked for Videorama in Germany before) but this offering is a classically Private-styled glimpse into a sun-kissed fantasy lifestyle. Review brief: CASTINGS 2 Private Directed by Pierre Woodman Starring: Karina, Aliza, Kirsten, Barbara Doll, Veronica Bella, Pierre Woodman and others The welcome conversion of Woodman's ever-intriguing Castings series to DVD continues apace with this second edition providing the historical perspective on more wannabe porn stars who placed themselves in front of Pierre's probing lens. Some of course, made it. Others, perhaps repelled by the ruthless Frenchman's intrusive questioning, merely flash their bodies for the camera in a fleeting dalliance with stardom and then return, one might say wisely, to the real world. This series features a mixture of roughly-shot castings footage, hardcore scenes and Woodman's infamous initiations - I have said it before and will doubtless say it again, the quality is not all it should be, so be aware of that. Anyway, let's meet the girls Barbara Doll Subsequently quite a star, Barbara appears here as a smiling 22-year-old secretary, eager to make it into the business.

Consequently, the quality is extremely variable. This edition is introduced by elegant, dark-haired beauty Yasmine (a Hustler centrefold earlier this year), who Woodman has worked with on other occasions, but her intros are overdubbed with the profoundly irritating narration that Private erroneously seems to consider an enhancement.
