Apart from the prospect of a good old-fashioned roll in the hay, what is there about a farm that makes it a good setting for a porn film - and that's without getting into the more unsavoury possibilities? But a rural setting it is for Cock O'Neal, as the 13th edition of Jean-Yves Le Castel's Matador series is shot in part on a real Hungarian farm, with ramshackle buildings, animals, mud and a real old farmer playing the father of the main protagonists - a simpleton who is a bit of a stud on the side (convincingly portrayed by Robert Rosenberg) and his bossy older brother, played by Steve Holmes.

Julia Swen
Sent out to work with no breakfast, Robert's consolation soon arrives in the form of vet Julia Swen, the willowy blonde who's featured on the left of the front cover (she also works as Christianne De Nerville). I never thought I'd find myself writing that, so maybe Matador 13 does have something unique going for it after all.

Overall
I realise I've been using phrases like "nothing too nasty" to describe a scene in a Matador movie and I'm aware that's just not what a lot of seasoned Matador viewers want to hear - they want nasty! Fair enough, will double anal do you, sir? Maybe it's not quite sufficient, if you're used to scene after scene of gaping anuses. I know some viewers will consider a girl-girl scene close to heresy! What can I say - I thought Cock O'Neal was good, forgettable fun, and nothing more.

On the other hand, director Jean-Yves Le Castel has really started to refine his productions. There are some good dolly and crane shots (the crane camera is used more appropriately here), mixed up with close-in handheld shots, the editing is decent - to my taste - and it's generally well lit. Even if the weak story and acting (the dialogue is an incongruous mix of the actors' performances and overdubs) don't measure up to the ever-improving production values, it's clear that Le Castel is gradually creating better quality movies. The danger is that, with a movie such as this, he's alienating sectors of his original Matador audience, while still too heavily mired in the kind of hard sex that may be too much for a wider audience, an audience that may well snigger up its sleeve at the primitive plot. I am really not sure. For me, it's a movie I enjoyed watching to a certain extent, but could happily live without it.

DVD Comments
The picture quality is generally good, with occasional areas of excessive brightness. I didn't notice any particular issues with sound. The usual menus are available - chapters, audio language and subtitles and extras offering cast and production information, photos and an on-set report. This latter feature is usually a highlight of this series, but this one is merely a three-minute mix of clips from the feature interspersed with occasional out-takes and behind the scenes moments. At least it's free of the usual Private narrative hyperbole.
