Review brief: Nuttin Cast: Hernando, B. Nasty, V. Twizzy, Lorenzo, James, and Boom Boom. Director: Baby Boss Production date: 1/2/026/27/02 Length: 60 min. Extras: A bonus scene from Nuttin 2 ("Jail Bird," running time: 9:31), and a photo gallery which doesn't work on my player. Boobie prizes: I initially had difficulty getting my machine to accept this DVD-R. It was too thick to fit into the iMac slot until I peeled off the website label around the central hole. The studio logo is ubiquitous in this production; prominent silver-on-black lettering appears on shirts and/or hats in five of the six scenes. I understand concerns about piracy, but I would've preferred a subtle watermark over what appears to be unrelenting self-promotion. The box cover photo is slightly misleading, since it was taken prior to the tattoo work which appears in the movie. Audio/visual quality: The picture is masked to a widescreen ratio. The camerawork is handheld, lending a not-quite-polished feel which some viewers prefer.

Review brief: Italy's Finest Cast: Riccardo, Bruno Rossi, Marc Lacoma, Marco Altieri, and Alessandro Capua. I'm not certain they're credited in order of appearance, so I'm unable to identify them by scene. Director: Edward James Production date: 4/99 (opening statement); 6/25/01 (box) Length: 62 min. Extras: A ten-minute recap of pop shots at the end, plus a photo gallery with 20 images. Boobie prize: Four minutes of sleazy ads precede the menu. I can scan through at 8x but cannot skip them altogether. These forced ads hawk straight websites and phone sex. Hey, if I wanted to see augmented tits, I wouldn't be watching man porn. I've deducted a half star from the overall rating for this idiocy. Audio/visual quality: The camerawork is generally pleasing and very well focused (e.g., the men's pores are easily visible during the shaving). There's a little too much enhanced motion for my taste, as well as some intercut footage of roses that begins to test my patience.

Review brief: Update (3/27/2004): A number of improvements have been made to Marie and Jack. Comstock Films discontinued the DVD-R version last year. The movie is now replicated on high quality DVDs and packaged in standard size Amaray cases with full-color inserts. Multiple chapter stops help facilitate skimming. A time code/time search function is enabled for the entire disc. Also, the minor audio glitch on my original reviewer's copy has indeed been fixed. For more information, see the "Marie and Jack Q&A" thread at the Adult DVD Talk forum. Comstock Films deserves a lot of credit for such a gracious response to customer feedback. A fantastic movie is now even more fabulous! Cast: Marie Silva (aka Aria) and Jack Bravo. Director: Tony Comstock Production date: ©2003 Length: 28 min. Review brief: Cast: Nick Stone, Jeff Baron, Rick Randy, P.J. Dixon, Ian Mathis, Julian Morino and Ricky Amman in major sex roles; Tom Spade, Trey Anubis and Evan Teed in minor sex roles and bonus footage. Director: Miles Strayhorn Writer: Cock Robin, based on a book by Gore Vittle. Production date: ©2003 Length: 81 min. Extras: An 8-min. bonus scene "in the raw," 4 min. of behind-the-scenes footage and 18 min. of trailers (for all five of Daddy Oohhh!'s previously released titles). Audio/visual quality: Much of the camerawork has a documentary feel, allowing the viewer to experience the maze of hallways and rooms right along with the performers. The setting is Basic Plumbing, a Seattle sex club sparsely furnished with oversized industrial and art objects. At odd moments, this dark and surreal environment reminds me of Wakefield Poole's Bijou, a movie which I very much like. The lighting tends to be somewhat dimthe undersaturated colors almost approach sepia tones at times. This does fit the atmosphere very well, however, and it does not prevent the action from being seen.

Noddtobe, based on a book by Henri de Ballsack. Someone's had fun cooking up a slew of puns for the end credits. My favorite? The production sound mixer, Sean Song d'Moor. Production date: ©2002 Length: 65 min. Extras: A 10-min. behind-the-scenes featurette and a gallery with 42 images. Audio/visual quality: The visual quality is tolerable, but not the finest effort I've seen from this studio. The camerawork meanders at times; there are unsteady moments in the handheld footage and possibly too much use of the zoom. The focus is not always as sharp or careful as it should be. The lighting conditions also pose a minor challenge, due to the high contrast between sunlit windows and candlelit interior. Despite the flaws, the movie's never unwatchable.

Audio/visual quality: The quality of print is excellent, with a minimum of speckles and other defects. The lighting tends to be a bit low, but in a way that's flattering to the performers. The mix of camera angles is good. Shadows partially obscure some of the action, though not to the point that it bothers me. The penetration footage is briefer and generally less explicit than is common nowadays; it holds up well, however, when compared to other movies of the day. Audio/visual quality: The handheld camerawork is very good and fits the documentary style perfectly. The lighting is excellentnever harsh, always adequate. Shadows and soft focus shifts occur once in a while, but they're not severe enough to cause a serious distraction. The on-site audio is generally superb. Audio/visual quality: The technical aspects of this disc are very good. The camerawork is competent, and Manga's characteristic editing stylewhich includes scattered jump cuts, monochrome and masksis fun to watch. Because of the relatively low lighting, shadows and grain are present in some scenes. A crewmember's shoe is briefly visible at one point, but I haven't spotted any other potential distractions. The soundtrack is original. As I've come to expect from this director, the music's eclectic range of styles supports the different types of scenes. Audio/visual quality: The video quality is pretty good, with decent lighting and only minor soft focus issues. Equipment and crew members sometimes appear at the edges of the screen, which is not uncommon for gonzo productions. The white balance is off in scene three, giving the flesh tones an orange cast. The lighting is saturated in places; however, this tends to be more of an problem in the house tours than during the actual sex. The DVD authoring is far from stellar. Audio/visual quality: The main location (reused for seven scenes) is a clean but characterless bedroom with an attached bath. The other two locations are similar and appear to be hotel rooms. The camerawork is acceptable, with reasonably good handheld technique. There are sporadic soft focus shifts. The scenes are overlit, and no serious attempt has been made to disguise the light stands or electrical cords in the bedroom. The audio is horrendous. The music consists of the same lite jazz/rock that you might hear when the operator puts you on hold, and it becomes increasingly grating as the movie progresses (especially since it infrequently matches the mood of the scenes). Shower sounds are apparently looped along with at least one direction ("Go ahead and rinse yourself off" can be heard six times in the third scene). Extras: Diesel's review at AdultDVDEmpire.com reports that the DVD includes a gallery of random freeze-framed stills. I am unable to view it on my copy, however. The only other "extras" are ads. Audio/visual quality: Print quality is very rough for first few minutes. Fortunately, the worst flickering subsides before the sex begins. The presence of blemishes, artifacts and video noise is probably acceptable given the age of the movie. The camerawork and editing are quite nicemuch less choppy than a few of the other classics I've seen. The emphasis falls on medium-length shots, with pleasing pans between faces and genitals.

Review brief: Cast: Claudia Chase, Candy Roxxx, Billy Glide and Alex Sanders. Director: Luc Wylder Production date: 5/3/02 Length: 80 min. Extras: A slide show with 20 photos. Audio/visual quality: The lighting is poorly balanced. The backgrounds are overly bright, and the performers' skins are dark. The handheld camerawork meanders and occasionally suffers from jitters. The angles are too often indirect and dissatisfying. Seven minutes into the movie, I'm already feeling frustrated that so much of the view has been devoted to food and to headless torsos. The focus is a bit soft in places but not bad overall. There are also continuity problems and a few scattered artifacts. The music (rock instrumentals and electronica of questionable quality) supplies the only audio for the first 21 minutes. The sex sounds are nicely audible when they finally do enter the mix. The second scene is exclusively live sound. Unfortunately, traffic noise filters in from outside, and there's also a pretty strong echo in the room. Much of the murmured sex talk is incomprehensible.

Several locations are cramped, which somewhat limits the camera angles. There are infrequent problems with soft focus and artifacts. During the hotel scenes, lighting woes result from the high contrast ratios between the windows and interiors. Some action is saturated; some is backlit. The color balance is slightly off in a few edits, with skin tones appearing a bit blue in the wintery sunlight. The audio has good volume and sufficient clarity throughout. Sex scenes include live sound only; a few grunts and moans are loud enough cause a little distortion.

Extras: A 26-min. featurette with bloopers, behind-the-scenes and extra sex footage; fetish menu; photo gallery with 57 images; filmographies for all female cast; biography for Jules Jordan; cast list for each scene. Audio/visual quality: Jules does an excellent job of making the video look good under high key lighting conditions. The camera's shadow sometimes falls across the performers' bodies. In a few places, sunlight also appears to be reflecting (refracting?) off the camera optics. These flaws are infrequent and short-lived, however. The handheld camerawork is smooth, the angles are pleasing and the focus is sharp. The location for Lex the Impaler 2 is the same ultra-hip house used in the first volume. It's a very attractive setting, and this time, we get to see a couple new rooms. The audio quality is also generally quite good.

Audio/visual quality: The technical qualities of Kick Ass DVDs continue to impress me. The visual strengths include a nice variety of satisfying camera angles and a sharp focus even during extreme close-ups. The audio suffers very slightly from hiss and minor background noises, but the clarity is good on the important stuff, like the bed squeaking. There's normally no music during the sex, although Rhiannon's scene does include the Specs Appeal theme at an unobtrusive volume in the background.

The dynamic visual effects include jump edits, color shifts, monochrome footage, intercut text and more. These are generally concentrated in the early part of each scene. The sets are dark by design, yet the action is easily seen. Grain and artifacts appear here and there. Review brief: Cast: Leslie Bovee, Kay Parker, Sharon Thorpe, Desiree West, Annette Haven, Amber Hunt, Carole Tong, Abigail Clayton, Eileen Dover, Suzette Holland (aka Cris Cassidy), Kent Hall, Jack Wright, John Leslie, Peter Johns, Joe Civera (aka Joey Silvera), Roberto Ramos and Johnnie Keyes in sex roles; plus 20 credited actors in non-sex roles. Director: Anthony Spinelli Production date: The original copyright is 1977, but the DVD appears to be mastered from a 1979 print. (The DVD release date was 5/14/01.) Length: 90 min. Extras: None. There's not even a crummy web site ad. Unlike some early VCX releases, however, Sex World is recorded on a single track and does have a time code for easier navigation. I suppose we must be grateful for small mercies. False advertising: The box lists an "Animated Main Menu," an "Animated Jump to Scene" and "Photo Shots." There is no photo gallery. The main menu is not animated. The chapter menu does have an eight-second background loop, but the nine chapter stops are illustrated by stills.

Directed by: Tina Tyler

Review brief: Cast: Nina Hartley, Kylie Ireland, Brooke Hunter, Kimi Lixx, Dru Berrymore, Tina Tyler, Tara Indiana, Sean Michaels, Drew Andrews, Paul Carrigan, Steve Hatcher, Randy Spears and Don Hollywood in sex roles; George Kaplan and Maryann Walters in non-sex roles. Director: Tina Tyler Production date: 10/22/01 Length: 74 min. Extras: A 34-min. behind-the-scenes featurette, and trailers for the feature and three additional titles. False advertising: The box lists "Cast/Filmmaker Profiles," "Behind the Scenes" and "The Making of Tina Tyler's Going Down" as three separate extras, when in fact there's only one featurette. The featurette does contain performer and director interviews, which might be considered "profiles," so I haven't deducted any points. But it's definitely sloppy copy, and I don't like it. Audio/visual quality: Visual quality is roughly equal to VHS. There are minor ongoing problems with artifacts, soft focus, shadows and color bleeds across high contrast edges. Emphasis falls on medium-length shots.

Review brief: Cast: Tina Tyler, Danielle Rogers, T.J. Hart, Alexandra Silk, Elle DeVyne, Mandi Frost, Taylor Moore, Jennifer Worthington, Randy Spears, Tony Tedeschi, Steve Hatcher and Alec Metro. Director: Bud Lee Production date: 4/20/98 Length: 107 min. Extras: Two trailers and a silent slide show with 20 photos. Audio/visual quality: The visual quality is adequate, though it lacks in crispness. Emphasis is on soft-core shots. A boom mike dances around the edge of the screen in scene two, creating a minor distraction. The soundtrack is synth rock and light jazz. It won't win any awards, but it's mostly inoffensive. The volume of the music varies a bit within the scenes, but it's well balanced with the sex sounds. Some audio noise and background sounds are present. In general, the volume is on the quiet side, though not intolerably so. False advertising: This is a subtle point, but both reviewer and Astroknight have mentioned that Tina Tyler should appear on the cover. I agree.

Review brief: Cast: Nina Hartley, Lauren Montgomery, Keri Windsor, Dee, Bridgette Kerkove, Adajja, Herschel Savage, Mark Davis, Rich Handsome and Cheyne Collins in sex roles; Joey Ray, Johnny Dunn and others in non-sex roles. Director: Toni English Production date: 5/15/01 (box); 12/17/01 (feature) Length: 73 min. feature, plus 8 min. from volumes two (recap) and four (preview) Extras: A 14-min. scene from Hotspot, 7 short biographies (Nina, Dee, Lauren, Keri, Bridgette, Adajja, Herschel), 3 trailers and a slide show with 20 photos. Disc problems: My Apple DVD Player (version 2.2.1) is not reading the time stamp. If I quit during the middle of the scene and later reopen the application, the disc restarts at the FBI warning screen. This is rather annoying. There are only five chapters in the feature itself, which means a lot of scanning is necessary to find the place where I left off. Audio/visual quality: The visual quality is extremely good, with attractive sets, nice lighting and pleasing camera angles.
