Starring: Billy Glide, Claudia Chase, Alex Sanders, Candy Roxx

Review brief: Cast: Claudia Chase, Candy Roxxx, Billy Glide and Alex Sanders. Director: Luc Wylder Production date: 5/3/02 Length: 80 min. Extras: A slide show with 20 photos. Audio/visual quality: The lighting is poorly balanced. The backgrounds are overly bright, and the performers' skins are dark. The handheld camerawork meanders and occasionally suffers from jitters. The angles are too often indirect and dissatisfying. Seven minutes into the movie, I'm already feeling frustrated that so much of the view has been devoted to food and to headless torsos. The focus is a bit soft in places but not bad overall. There are also continuity problems and a few scattered artifacts. The music (rock instrumentals and electronica of questionable quality) supplies the only audio for the first 21 minutes. The sex sounds are nicely audible when they finally do enter the mix. The second scene is exclusively live sound. Unfortunately, traffic noise filters in from outside, and there's also a pretty strong echo in the room. Much of the murmured sex talk is incomprehensible.

Review brief: Cast: Alexandra Silk, Jasmine Klein, Chennin Blanc, Jenny Lynn, Rick Masters, Cheyne Collins and Bud Nolan in sex roles; Luc Wylder, Buddy Blueberry, Paul Sylvester, Butch Vaughn and Scarlet Begonia in non-sex roles. Director: Luc Wylder Production date: 5/25/02 (box); 6/10/02 (opening statement) Length: 136 min. Extras: A 31-min. behind-the-scenes featurette, pop shot button, bios for all female cast, four trailers and a slide show with 40 photos. Audio/visual quality: The visual quality is adequate. Several locations are cramped, which somewhat limits the camera angles. There are infrequent problems with soft focus and artifacts. During the hotel scenes, lighting woes result from the high contrast ratios between the windows and interiors. Some action is saturated; some is backlit. The color balance is slightly off in a few edits, with skin tones appearing a bit blue in the wintery sunlight. The audio has good volume and sufficient clarity throughout. Sex scenes include live sound only; a few grunts and moans are loud enough cause a little distortion.

Directed by: Jules Jordan

Review brief: Cast: Alexa Rae, Ryan Conner, Monica Sweetheart, Shyla, August Night; featuring Lexington Steele. Director: Jules Jordan Production date: 3/15/02 Length: 132 min. Extras: A 26-min. featurette with bloopers, behind-the-scenes and extra sex footage; fetish menu; photo gallery with 57 images; filmographies for all female cast; biography for Jules Jordan; cast list for each scene. Audio/visual quality: Jules does an excellent job of making the video look good under high key lighting conditions. The camera's shadow sometimes falls across the performers' bodies. In a few places, sunlight also appears to be reflecting (refracting?) off the camera optics. These flaws are infrequent and short-lived, however. The handheld camerawork is smooth, the angles are pleasing and the focus is sharp. The location for Lex the Impaler 2 is the same ultra-hip house used in the first volume. It's a very attractive setting, and this time, we get to see a couple new rooms. The audio quality is also generally quite good.

Review brief: Cast: Karianna, Rhiannon Bray, Elizabeth Delmar, Ashley, Claire, Lee Stone, Pat Myne, Jay Ashley, Mark Ashley, Alex Sanders (all performers are identified by clips in the credits, which is always helpful). Director: Andre Madness Production date: 4/12/02 Lengths: 96 min. Extras: Six trailers, 6 min. bloopers and a slide show with 20 photos. Audio/visual quality: The technical qualities of Kick Ass DVDs continue to impress me. The visual strengths include a nice variety of satisfying camera angles and a sharp focus even during extreme close-ups. The audio suffers very slightly from hiss and minor background noises, but the clarity is good on the important stuff, like the bed squeaking. There's normally no music during the sex, although Rhiannon's scene does include the Specs Appeal theme at an unobtrusive volume in the background.

Audio/visual quality: Overall, the audiovisual quality of the movies is acceptable given their age. Both are shot on film, with minimal scratches and other blemishes in the prints. The colors in Delicious appear somewhat faded with time, and the original editing feels choppy, with too many quick cuts between genital and facial close-ups. The focus and lighting are pretty good, however.

Review brief: Cast: Tina Tyler, Keri Windsor, Logan LaBrent, Kylie Ireland, Nikki Steele, August, Kylie Kurves, Victoria Givens and Serena. Director: Anders Manga Production date: 7/2/02 Length: 91 min. Extras: A 3-min. bonus scene, 8 min. of interviews (Keri, Kylie K., Victoria), "Glamour" music video, four diary entries (poems related to the scenes) and about a minute of additional fun footage. Audio/visual quality: This is a highly aesthetic production. The provocative images of Girl Show 2 serve as a creative tribute to the beauty and the insanity of female passion. The dynamic visual effects include jump edits, color shifts, monochrome footage, intercut text and more. These are generally concentrated in the early part of each scene. To the director's credit, the picture grows steadier as the masturbation gains momentum, providing sustained looks at the actresses' increasing excitement. The camera angles, lighting and mix of shots are all extremely pleasing.

Audio/visual quality: Pandora is a relatively new studio, and they are still working on refining the technical aspects of their DVDs. Even so, I would rate this disc's audiovisual quality as somewhat above average. The camerawork occasionally feels a little conservative, but the angles are generally solid and satisfying. The sets are dark by design, yet the action is easily seen. Grain and artifacts appear here and there. Other minor blemishes include sporadic soft focus shifts, a slight internal reflection in the camera (in scene two only) and a crew member's shadow on the wall (in scene three only). The musical style varies widely from techno to classical.

Extras: A three-page biography of Nina (with no option for viewers to navigate at their own pace). Audio/visual quality: The visual quality is weak. The images are too soft, and the colors are washed out. Light levels vary noticeably when the camera angles change. There are problems with shadows, poor focus, oversaturated and insufficient lighting (both extremes) and blemishes that look like scratches in the master print. We do get a direct view of the action much of the time, however. The audio quality is also substandard. There are persistent and annoying background sounds, as if the microphone is repeatedly bumped. Dubbing is obvious in a couple places. Several scenes contain jazz music, which is quite pleasant except for the obvious looping. The sound of one of Nina's climaxes has been edited out.

Audio/visual quality: The visual appearance is soft and painterly, yet the focus is still adequately sharp. The camerawork incorporates pans and zooms in a pleasing and intelligent way, lending a gently dynamic feel. The blend of wide, medium and close-up shots seems exactly right. Thankfully, only the menus have enhanced motion. The minor visual flaws include color bleeds across high contrast areas, a few reflections of crew members and occasional darkening at the corners of the screen. The majority of the action is musicless, so the sex sounds come through nice and clear. Each scene does have a theme song, though, which helps to bridge the transitions between positions.

Audio/visual quality: The visual quality is usually quite satisfactory, with clear and easily seen action. There are minor ongoing problems with soft focus, too much backlighting, a bit of graininess, intrusions of equipment at the edge of the screen and a couple of off-camera directions. These are issues that might be expected for a gonzo production, however, and they aren't too bothersome. The music typically has a light, easygoing island flavor that supports the scenes. When the performers are near the surf, the live sex sounds sometimes get a little lost, but I'm sure that couldn't be helped. The sets and lighting are fairly decent, but the edits between soft and hard-core footage feel disjointed. There are minor problems with mushy focus, too many extreme close-ups, weird framing and medium-length shots that chop off the performers' heads. There's also a flickering line across the bottom of the screen. The audio is better, with a soundtrack of reasonably listenable hard rock and jazz. Occasionally, the cameraman catches other parts of the room along the edges of the screen, but it's only a minor distraction. The music is smoky jazz (and what could be more appropriate?). Review brief: Cast: Leslie Bovee, Kay Parker, Sharon Thorpe, Desiree West, Annette Haven, Amber Hunt, Carole Tong, Abigail Clayton, Eileen Dover, Suzette Holland (aka Cris Cassidy), Kent Hall, Jack Wright, John Leslie, Peter Johns, Joe Civera (aka Joey Silvera), Roberto Ramos and Johnnie Keyes in sex roles; plus 20 credited actors in non-sex roles. Director: Anthony Spinelli Production date: The original copyright is 1977, but the DVD appears to be mastered from a 1979 print. (The DVD release date was 5/14/01.) Length: 90 min. Extras: None. There's not even a crummy web site ad. Unlike some early VCX releases, however, Sex World is recorded on a single track and does have a time code for easier navigation. I suppose we must be grateful for small mercies. False advertising: The box lists an "Animated Main Menu," an "Animated Jump to Scene" and "Photo Shots." There is no photo gallery. The main menu is not animated. The chapter menu does have an eight-second background loop, but the nine chapter stops are illustrated by stills.

Review brief: Cast: Nina Hartley, Kylie Ireland, Brooke Hunter, Kimi Lixx, Dru Berrymore, Tina Tyler, Tara Indiana, Sean Michaels, Drew Andrews, Paul Carrigan, Steve Hatcher, Randy Spears and Don Hollywood in sex roles; George Kaplan and Maryann Walters in non-sex roles. Director: Tina Tyler Production date: 10/22/01 Length: 74 min. Extras: A 34-min. behind-the-scenes featurette, and trailers for the feature and three additional titles. False advertising: The box lists "Cast/Filmmaker Profiles," "Behind the Scenes" and "The Making of Tina Tyler's Going Down" as three separate extras, when in fact there's only one featurette. The featurette does contain performer and director interviews, which might be considered "profiles," so I haven't deducted any points. But it's definitely sloppy copy, and I don't like it. Audio/visual quality: Visual quality is roughly equal to VHS. There are minor ongoing problems with artifacts, soft focus, shadows and color bleeds across high contrast edges. Emphasis falls on medium-length shots.

Review brief: Cast: Tina Tyler, Danielle Rogers, T.J. Hart, Alexandra Silk, Elle DeVyne, Mandi Frost, Taylor Moore, Jennifer Worthington, Randy Spears, Tony Tedeschi, Steve Hatcher and Alec Metro. Director: Bud Lee Production date: 4/20/98 Length: 107 min. Extras: Two trailers and a silent slide show with 20 photos. Audio/visual quality: The visual quality is adequate, though it lacks in crispness. Emphasis is on soft-core shots. A boom mike dances around the edge of the screen in scene two, creating a minor distraction. The soundtrack is synth rock and light jazz. It won't win any awards, but it's mostly inoffensive. The volume of the music varies a bit within the scenes, but it's well balanced with the sex sounds. Some audio noise and background sounds are present. In general, the volume is on the quiet side, though not intolerably so. False advertising: This is a subtle point, but both reviewer and Astroknight have mentioned that Tina Tyler should appear on the cover. I agree.
