Studio: Adam & Eve
Starring: Mark Davis, Dee [II] (classic female), Lauren Montgomery, Nina Hartley, Keri Windsor, Rich Handsome, Cheyne Collins, Bridgette Kerkove, Adajja, Joey Ray, Herschel Savage, John Dunn
Directed by: Toni English
Review brief: Cast: Nina Hartley, Lauren Montgomery, Keri Windsor, Dee, Bridgette Kerkove, Adajja, Herschel Savage, Mark Davis, Rich Handsome and Cheyne Collins in sex roles; Joey Ray, Johnny Dunn and others in non-sex roles. Director: Toni English Production date: 5/15/01 (box); 12/17/01 (feature) Length: 73 min. feature, plus 8 min. from volumes two (recap) and four (preview) Extras: A 14-min. scene from Hotspot, 7 short biographies (Nina, Dee, Lauren, Keri, Bridgette, Adajja, Herschel), 3 trailers and a slide show with 20 photos. Disc problems: My Apple DVD Player (version 2.2.1) is not reading the time stamp. If I quit during the middle of the scene and later reopen the application, the disc restarts at the FBI warning screen. This is rather annoying. There are only five chapters in the feature itself, which means a lot of scanning is necessary to find the place where I left off. Audio/visual quality: The visual quality is extremely good, with attractive sets, nice lighting and pleasing camera angles.

Starring: Layla, Monique Covet, Robert Rosenberg, Kevin Long, Georgette, Anita Black, Lora, Nataly Dune, Violet Storm, Tony De Sergio
Directed by: Tanya Hyde
Review brief: Cast: Monique Covet, Nataly Dune, Violet Storm, Georgette, Anita Black, Lora, Layla Jade, Kevin Long, Robert Rosenberg, Tony de Sergio Director: Tanya Hyde Production date: 9/2000 (box); 10/2000 (opening statement) Length: 84 min. (box claims a running time of 100 min.) Extras: Trailer for feature and five other releases, photo gallery with 36 images, biographies for all female cast, film notes (basically a press release), and language and subtitle options (which are relatively unimportant since there is no dialog beyond the opening credits). Audio/visual quality: The raw footage has been extensively processed to include jump edits, color shifts, blurs, enhanced motion, strobing and lots of other interesting effects. Horizontal masks at the top and bottom of the video give it a widescreen appearance. The pacing is best described as frenetic. The camera's shadow does occasionally fall on the performers' bodies, but with so much on-screen activity, it's a flaw that's easily overlooked.

Audio/visual quality: In contrast with the dark subject matter, the visual quality of this movie is soft and painterly. Some scenes are saturated with sunlight, an artistic decision that does not interfere with my enjoyment. Starring: Brick Majors, Julian, Kyle Stone, Evan Stone [I] (straight), Elle Devyne, Lauren Montgomery, Ginger Paige, Tracy Love, Keri Windsor, Eric Masterson, Maya Divine
Review brief: Cast: Lauren Montgomery, Maya Divine (aka Wendy Divine), Ginger Paige, Tracy Love, Elle DeVyne, Keri Windsor, Julian, Evan Stone, Brick Majors, Kyle Stone and Eric Masterson in sex roles; Lloyd "The Barber" in a non-sex role. Director: F. J. Lincoln Production date: 7/99 Length: 117 min. Extras: One trailer, slide show with 20 photos and 4 short biographies for Lauren, Keri, Tracy and Maya. Audio/visual quality: Visual quality is adequate, though lacking in crispness. Emphasis is on medium and close-up shots, with almost no full body shots. Camera angles are limited, possibly due to space constraints imposed by the tiny barbershop set. The harsh lighting in the first three scenes is unflattering to the actresses. The camera crew successfully avoids their reflections in the mirrors; however, a crew member is caught on screen in scene four. Vignetting occurs frequently throughout the feature.

Directed by: Andre Madness
Review brief: Cast: Majella, Sunrise Adams, Kennedy, Nikita Denise, Ann Marie, Dillon Day, Jay Ashley, Lee Stone, Kyle Stone, Tony Pounds. (All performers, male and female, are identified by clips in the credits, which is a thoughtful touch.) Director: Andre Madness Production date: 8/24/01 Length: 101 min. Extras: Well designed sex menu, 9 min. bloopers, a slide show with 20 photos, and 4 previews. Audio/visual quality: The camerawork nicely mixes long, medium and close-up shots. The focus stays consistently sharp (except for menus and credits, which creatively incorporate a few intentionally fuzzy images). Minor problems with shadows and overlighting are present, but not often enough to interfere with my overall enjoyment of the DVD. There's a low audio hum in places, though it's not overly distracting. The balance is occasionally a little off, especially in scene four. The audio clarity is otherwise good; dialog is very easy to understand, and there's no obvious dubbing.

Disc problems: As with Naked Hollywood 1: Faking It, my Apple DVD Player (version 2.2.1) freezes if I let the menu autostart. I can circumvent the problem by holding down the right arrow key (which is the shortcut for chapter skipping). This may or may not be an issue on other players. Audio/visual quality: The video quality is immaculate. The images are consistently clear and crisp, with no significant shadow problems. The camerawork is smooth and expert, and there's nothing goofy in the editing.

My Dad's Dirty Movies 1 & 2

Reviewed on: 4/13/2002
Studio: Fallen Angel
Review brief: Cast: uncredited Compiler: Luc Wylder Production date: 10/23/01 (from archival material, ca. 1960s-1970s) Length: 148 min. Extras: Trailers for Sex Across America 1-3, Amateur Angels 1 and Forbidden Lust. Audio/visual quality: The print quality varies from mediocre to worse. Speckles and scratches are frequently visible. Three of the 13 scenes are black and white; the color segments have obviously faded with age. Soft focus problems and inexpert camera angles abound. A couple of chapters are jumpy, possibly due to wear and tear on the original film perforations. Oddly enough, the poor video quality actually contributes to the fun. It really does give the viewer a sense that the loops were unexpectedly discovered moldering away in the back of Dad's closet. The audio track consists of jazz and a "running movie projector" sound effect. The sensuous, flirty music evokes the ambiance of an intimate club, perhaps from the early 1960s. Many of the tunes are so catchy that they've pleasantly lingered in my head long after viewing the DVD.

Special effects (blurs, slo mo, monochrome, etc.) are fairly frequent but quite aesthetically pleasing.

Director: John Stagliano Production date: 1/2/00 Length: 220 min. Extras: Full motion chapter indexing, audio commentary by John Stagliano and Tricia Devereaux, fetish menu, cast lists for each scene, photo gallery with 51 images, Evil Angel filmographies for female cast. Audio/visual quality: Video quality is quite pleasing, especially for a gonzo movie. Focus and lighting problems are rare, and there's a nice mix of long, medium, close-up and extreme close-up shots. On only a couple of occasions, the cameraman and equipment get caught in the picture. The jump edits during Mina's tease sequence keep things interesting. Reddish-orange tints are slightly enhanced in scenes one and four, which adds a warm glow to the flesh tones. The audio is nice and clear, with no music. Some muffled traffic noise can be heard during scene three, and airplanes can be heard in scene four.

Audio/visual quality: The camerawork is sure and steady, with a nice mix of long, medium and close-up shots. A few shadows fall on the action, but they're not too bad. Audio is a bit hollow and spotty in places. As might be expected in the outdoor settings, there's a little noise from wind, airplanes, a police siren, etc. Some of the music is markedly better than typical porno tunes from the early 1990s. Several pieces have a pleasing "unplugged" quality, featuring acoustic guitar.

Extras: Full motion chapter indexing, commentary by Devinn Lane and Wesley Emerson, 17-min. behind-the-scenes featurette, 15 trailers, 6 audio bios, slide show with 31 stills, plus various promotional materials for Wicked studio. Audio/visual quality: The focus is slightly soft in places, but overall quite good. Lighting is adequate. Crew members are infrequently visible along the edges of the set or outside the windows. Enhanced motion appears here and there. A strong and typically fast beat drives the music. The "dance floor" groove is occasionally not to my taste, but overall, it's very listenable and well-balanced with the sex sounds.

In one sex scene, a crew member gets caught in the picture and beats a hasty retreat. Lens specks appear in a couple of places, but only in the non-sex footage. Extras: Ten previews and 24 bonus scenes. This is a double-sided disc, with most of the extras on the flip side. I am unable to find the biographies advertised on the box. Audio/visual quality: During portions of this feature, the audio is imperfectly synched with the video (the actors' mouths move first, and their voices follow a fraction of a second later). Video noise disrupts the picture in a few places, but it's extremely brief and not highly noticeable. Crew members' shadows are occasionally visible. Emphasis is placed on medium length shots, with above average attention to facial expressions.

Studio: NuTech
Review brief: Production dates: 1992, 1993 (original Japanese versions); 1995, 1996 (English subtitles, dubbing); 1999 (NuTech release date) Length: 85 min. Extras: English/Japanese language selection, English subtitles, 3-min. educational segment ("About Anime"), 3-min. trailer (clips from the Urotsukidoji I-IV and La Blue Girl series, Twin Angels, Demon Beast Invasion and Adventure Kid). Audio/visual quality: Characters and scenery are generally well-drawn, with visually appealing colors. Animation is somewhat spare; repeat frames occur in a number of places. Movements are alternately choppy (ninja swordplay) and fluid (bouncing breasts). Facial expressions occasionally startle (when the good girls get angry, they show fanged canine teeth). At one point, a creative "camera angle" takes the viewer inside a vagina. The music has an appropriately "cartoonish" sound that fits the plot.

Directed by: Bob Chinn
Review brief: Cast: Nina Hartley, T.J. Hart, Tina Tyler, Dale DaBone, James Bonn (and Edith the Iguana, in a non-sex role) Director: Bob Chinn Production date: 5/30/99 Length: 81 min. Extras: four biographies, 17-photo slide show, 19 min. of previews (and a static scene selection menu, although box says "full motion") Audio/visual quality: A narrow artifact appears along the lower edge of the screen, but is fairly easy to ignore. Light levels vary noticeably at the beginning, probably due to changing cloud cover during different portions of the dialog. Otherwise, visual quality is quite good. Sound levels are low, though not overly so. Audio has good clarity. (Great sex sounds; no dubbing!) Music is gentle, upbeat and unobtrusive. Why I chose this DVD: I was intrigued by the scenario of an older woman with a younger man. Nina Hartley is 40 here, and Dale DaBone is 27. First impression: It's a slow simmer, yet surprisingly sexy.

Review brief: Cast: Jeanna Fine, Raylene, Stacy Valentine, Mustang Sally Layd, Rebecca Lord, Alec Metro, John Decker, Tony Tedeschi, Billy Glide, Dave Hardman, Brian Surewood, TT Boy, Vince Voyeur in sex roles; Simon Delo, Veronica Hart, Kitten Natividad in non-sex roles. Director: Antonio Passolini Production date: 6/97 Length: 132 min. Extras: None except a static chapter menu and four criminally short biographies. The disc's length and quality, however, largely mitigate the absence of extras. Audio/visual quality: Creative color effects saturate the hues in some scenes. This in no way detracts from the movie's heat. Enhanced motion ("slo-mo") is judiciously employed. Close-up shots are remarkably well focused. The music fits the action, yet is strong enough to stand as an independent soundtrack.

Review brief: Cast: Asia Carrera, Ashton Moore, Temptress, Taylor St. Claire, James Bonn, Jennifer Lee, Halli Aston, Gina Ryder, Alec Metro, Stephanie Swift, Mark Davis, Randy Spears, Lexington Steele, Cheyenne Silver, Brick Majors and more Director: Nick Orleans Production date: 6/11/98 (box); 9/10/98 (opening statement); 11/17/98 (ending statement) Length: 132 min. Sets and scenery are substantially above average. The music, which has an interesting "world beat" flavor, is exceptional throughout the feature. Dialog is clear; dubbing is nicely synched with the action. Why I chose this DVD: XXXmovie-wise, I'm still wet behind the ears (and elsewhere). Prior to this DVD, I'd seen only four adult films--one soft-core feature at a hotel and three hard-core features on videotape at home. I selected this title based solely on the vendor's description.
