Extras: English/Japanese language selection, English subtitles, 3-min. educational segment ("About Anime"), 3-min. trailer (clips from the Urotsukidoji I-IV and La Blue Girl series, Twin Angels, Demon Beast Invasion and Adventure Kid).
Audio/visual quality: Characters and scenery are generally well-drawn, with visually appealing colors. Animation is somewhat spare; repeat frames occur in a number of places. Movements are alternately choppy (ninja swordplay) and fluid (bouncing breasts). Facial expressions occasionally startle (when the good girls get angry, they show fanged canine teeth). At one point, a creative "camera angle" takes the viewer inside a vagina. The music has an appropriately "cartoonish" sound that fits the plot. The highly pitched female voices may irritate some viewers.
All of the above audio/visual characteristics are common in Japanimation; see Herschel Krustofsky's review for more details.
Disc problems: Main menu fails to self-load on my Apple DVD Player. This is a minor inconvenience; I just have to click the controller's menu button to gain access.
Why I chose this DVD: My tastes in adult entertainment are diverse, and I'm working toward a modest goal of owning at least one or two interesting titles from every genre. La Blue Girl 1 & 2 is my first foray into the world of hentai. ("Hentai" is the correct word for sexually explicit Japanese cartoons; "anime" is a broader term that's less accurate but more familiar.)
Synopsis: You know the classic spaghetti western The Good, the Bad and the Ugly? Well, La Blue Girl 1 & 2 also includes all three character types: Miroku ninjas (good), Suzuka ninjas (bad) and Shikima demons (ugly). Fasten your safety belt and don't stand up, because this plot takes many twists and turns.
Shikima demons have only one interest in life: the thorough abuse of all well-endowed, virginal women. A truce with the Miroku clan, however, confines the Shikima to their underworld. A magical signet case seals the alliance; whoever possesses the signet case controls the underworld.
For generations, the signet case has belonged to the female leaders of the Miroku line. When it's stolen by the Suzukas, the truce between the Miroku and the Shikima ends. To save humanity, the young ninja Miko and her half sister Miyu must attempt to retrieve the case while battling sex-crazed demons.
Miko's an 18-year-old virgin (and just in case you miss that point, it's repeated several times). The first Shikima to attack Miko arrives in human disguise and rapes her with his "roots of lust." She casts a "hair blast" spell that shoots needles of invisible pubic hair into his eyes. The second Shikima who goes after Miko accidentally kidnaps Miyu instead. (Miyu is wearing a pair of silk panties that Miko had borrowed, and they still smell like Miko's love juices, which confuses the poor demon and everyone else.)
To rescue Miyu, Miko faces north at midnight and masturbates, which allows her to enter the Shikima realm. A demon is already busy penetrating Miyu with his multiple penis-like tentacles (which have little eyeballs on the end..."Now see!" he taunts as he waves them around in the air). Miyu objects at first, but soon she's begging for more. Miko gets captured, too, and receives the same treatment. It looks hopeless for the two young women, but their powerful ancestors eventually come to the rescue.

In part two, every battle involves sexcraft. Whoever climaxes first, loses. In the Suzuka camp, the female ninja Bosatsu is practicing incestuous sexcraft with her brother Ranmaru. (Practice makes perfect; they've been going at it for 49 days. Incidentally, we later learn that Ranmaru is a hermaphrodite--he has breasts and a vagina as well as a penis.) Elsewhere, their Shikima friend Zenzo has captured Miko's college volleyball team. Zenzo ties them up, bends them over and forces them to masturbate with lit candles in front of the Mirror of Shame. Unfortunately, their creamy holes lack sufficient power to open the mirror, which is a passage between the human and demon worlds. So Zenzo takes the captive Shikima queen and lowers her by chain onto the mirror's giant dildo. He jerks her up and down until her trickle of juices unlocks the mirror.
The Suzuka clan charges into the Shikima realm through the opened mirror. Bosatsu defeats dozens of demons single-handedly with her amazing masturbatory skills (as they watch her, their penises grow so large they explode). Bosatsu then finds Miko and puts her sword to good use as a double dildo. Miko squirts impressively when she comes. By ninja logic, that would make Miko the loser; however, she has one more trick to try. Miko makes her clitoris as large as a penis and turns the tables on Bosatsu, who really isn't protesting very much. Miko also defeats Ranmaru by jerking him off while he rides her greatly enlarged clit (remember, he has both a penis and a vagina). Whew! Miko finally regains control of the all-important signet case.
Strange bedfellows: I'm a feminist. This DVD is misogynistic. So why do I like it?
Maybe it's because cartoons shut down the analytical part of my brain, at least temporarily. Or maybe it's because "rape" fantasies are fairly common among women (so I've read). Fantasies of this nature allow women to feel intensely sexual without any guilt and without any true loss of control. At the end of the fantasy, no real harm has been done. Cartoons are exactly like that; the characters endure incredible violence but typically possess amazing powers of recovery.
The arousal felt during violence and the arousal felt during sex are probably more alike than many of us would like to admit. Certainly, some of the body's physiological responses (increased heart rate, respiration, etc.) are very similar, regardless of the stimulus. That doesn't excuse rape in the real world, of course, but it does at least partially explain why sexually violent cartoons can be appealing.
La Blue Girl 1 & 2 is reputedly one of the most viewer-friendly anime DVDs available. There are moments of genuine humor, mostly provided by Miko's half-pint sidekick Nin-Nin. For an example of a less-friendly title, see Dumblonde's review of Cool Devices, especially the screenshots.
Themes: Non-consensual sex (rape), bondage and domination, bestiality/tentacle sex, ritual sex, masturbation, hermaphroditism, incest, squirting (female ejaculation), violence.
Juice-o-meter: Very high, if you're not overly disturbed by the dark themes. The abundant juice that flows graphically on the screen is a good source of inspiration.
Final analysis: La Blue Girl 1 & 2 is not for everyone, but if you've read this far, it might be for you. As for myself, I'm satisfied that I have an interesting (and watchable) hentai title for my collection.
