Audio/visual quality: In contrast with the dark subject matter, the visual quality of this movie is soft and painterly. Some scenes are saturated with sunlight, an artistic decision that does not interfere with my enjoyment. A few special editing effects (color shifts, increased grain, enhanced motion) have been employed where appropriate. A boom mike makes a brief appearance during a single dialog segment, one of the very few visual flaws in the movie.

The soundtrack soars with haunting orchestral ensemble pieces and moody rock songs. There has been significant editing of the sex sounds, but that was not at all obvious to me until I watched the behind-the-scenes featurette. The audio in scene two is music only, but the piano theme fits the romantic mood so well that I failed to notice the lack of sex sounds until the second viewing. In general, the audio is very well balanced and appealing to the ears.

First impression: This movie's eerie eroticism is just what I want.

Scene highlights: Struggling in the financial aftermath of her husband's suicide, Missy ("Jenny") bumps into Mickey G. ("Jack") while searching for an affordable apartment. Unbeknownst to her, he is ensnared in a bad business deal distributing "units" of an unspecified illegal nature. Desperate for any clear-cut direction in life, Missy bonds with this complex stranger who admires her erotic paintings. She willingly submits to his downward spiral of ever darker sexual scenarios, which culminates in a 4-on-1 gangbang.

The first brief yet critical scene shows Missy taking a break from painting to masturbate. She fantasizes about kissing Mickey, the man she's just met, as she reaches into her pants. She settles into her bed, where she rubs her clit and penetrates her moist pussy with her fingers. The scene ends with his phone call.

Missy arrives at the apartment to show Mickey her portfolio. He has created a picnic for her in the unfurnished space that he's now renting. They sit on a red, white and blue quilt on the floor, surrounded by the soft glow of candles. Mickey kisses Missy after offering her a bit of food. Although I should've seen it coming, the plot twist at the end still caught me by surprise the first time I watched.

Bonus question: There's at least one Easter egg in the special features menu. Can you find it?

Thumbs up: I love the slow ramp up in sexual tension. There's great use of foreshadowing, particularly with the candles that light the romantic picnic and then become an instrument of domination in the following scene. Only four of the seven scenes include intercourse beyond oral. When Missy expresses a little frustration, Mickey makes an interesting observation: "Fucking is crude. It's the other stuff that takes imagination, like life." Not all viewers will have the patience for this gradual build in intensity, but I believe it is inherent to the strength of the movie.

The acting and art direction are both superior. The casting is also ideal: Mickey's slightly sinister look and Missy's angelic appearance contrast perfectly. At the time this movie was made, they were a real life wedded couple, and the chemistry between them is self-evident.

Thumbs down: The main thing that's holding this movie back from total porno perfection is the lack of a director's commentary. There are enough interesting extras, though, that I have not docked any points for this oversight.

YogaGrrl's motherly advice: The hot wax segment includes the use of a colored candle. Use extreme caution if trying this at home. Chemical dyes and fragrances may irritate the skin, and certain types of additives (especially stearic acid) can raise the wax's melting point, potentially causing severe burns. It's best to stick with unadulterated white paraffin candles if you're new to BDSM play. Test a drop on the back of your hand before dribbling the wax on your partner. Pour from at least 18 inches (half a meter) away to allow partial cooling of the stream. Juice-o-meter: Very high by the end of the movie. A bit of trivia: this is the DVD I watched before my first trial run with the Decadent Indulgence vibrator, and the two experiences dovetailed beautifully.

Final analysis: Of the 19 adult movies I've reviewed to date, this is the first to receive a five star rating from me. That about says it all. Normally I prefer more playful porn with dominant females, but Tell Me What You Want grabbed my attention from the opening credits and never let go.
