Audio/visual quality: The visual quality is usually quite satisfactory, with clear and easily seen action. There are minor ongoing problems with soft focus, too much backlighting, a bit of graininess, intrusions of equipment at the edge of the screen and a couple of off-camera directions. These are issues that might be expected for a gonzo production, however, and they aren't too bothersome.

The music typically has a light, easygoing island flavor that supports the scenes. When the performers are near the surf, the live sex sounds sometimes get a little lost, but I'm sure that couldn't be helped. There are no problems whatsoever with wind noise during any of the outdoor scenes. The overall volume on the audio is also very good.

Disc problems: Something is really funky with the time stamp. My player's skip, scan and pause controls are completely disabled during the sex scenes. There are no navigation options beyond returning to the main menu or clicking the pop shot button. And yet everything works just fine during the interviews between the sex scenes! Normally I would ascribe this problem to my finicky Apple DVD Player, but Flash has also noted the lack of a proper time code in his review. The movie itself deserves at least four stars, but sadly, this technical flaw hampers my enjoyment enough that I am applying a half star deduction.

First impression: It truly is paradise!

Scene highlights: This is the first full installment of Sex Across America that I've had the pleasure of viewing (I've also seen a few individual scenes from volumes 2–4 on the Ass Angels 2 compilation disc). Apparently the idea is that Luc Wylder and Alexandra Silk assemble a small cast and take them on a tour of a particular city or state. This leads to all sorts of fun scenarios, both indoors and out.

The playful chemistry of the cast is evident from the very first scene. Alexandra, naked except for her cute sun hat, photographs Luc and Summer Storm on a hotel bed just five minutes after their arrival. Oral affection circulates freely; Alex teasingly protests, "Where are you going?!" when Luc shifts his weight during the blowjob. Alex takes a support role during Luc and Summer's intercourse, but she never seems left out. There are five vaginal positions, which include a hot transition from missionary to a standing embrace. I love Luc's scrumptious feedback: "You put it in!" and "I like it when you touch me!" He orgasms twice with Summer—first internally (his eyes go wild, and she lights up with delight) and then externally onto her breastbone (the second ejaculation is somewhat modest but still very respectable).

The cast hikes a forest trail, but three members are too horny to keep up. Luc "catches" Alex giving head to Valentino, while Summer provides support in the form of oral for Alex and spanking for Valentino. Valentino and Alex engage in three vaginal positions, including standing up and clinging to the overhead branches like monkeys. The ever-mischievous Alex also reaches down Summer's shorts to diddle her clit. Everyone looks extremely happy throughout this scene, which ends with Valentino jerking a tiny load onto Alex's tit.

Next comes oceans of fun on a deep sea fishing trip. Kate Frost (wearing a coconut-shell bikini top with a grass skirt) gets into Jay Ashley's surfer trunks. She performs an exceptional blowjob, with lots of teasing and deepthroating. Jay incorporates a generous amount of rimming into his oral play. They frolic in a couple of vaginal positions on a deck chair. At one point, Jay takes a big drink of water and then tips the bottle to splash Kate's body, which makes her laugh and squirm in protest. He orgasms from the vaginal thrusts alone, whipping the condom off just in time to spray her belly.

It's Christopher Streams' birthday, and T.J. Hart treats him to a romantic walk along the beach. T.J. is one of those actresses who looks even lovelier with each passing year, and she's particularly fetching here with a wreath of flowers in her hair. Her blowjob awakens his cock from a flaccid state—something that's shown much too rarely in porn. Christopher demonstrates his appreciation with some nice tonguework. They don't actually get down in the sand (which seems wise); the vaginal sex includes upright variations of doggie and reverse cowgirl, using a lava rock wall for support. To finish, Christopher drops a streamer of thick cum on T.J.'s breasts.

The four ladies visit an adult video store, where they discover the joys of the back rooms. The lighting is handled extremely well; it's dark enough that the women enjoy playing with glow sticks, but not so dark that we can't see. T.J. gets oral from Kate, along with a finger in her ass and a glow stick in her pussy. Meanwhile, Summer gets oral from Alex, along with a glow stick in her ass and three more in her pussy. Eventually, they all emerge into the main room, where they pleasure each other with tongues and vibrators (a Fukuoku 9000 and two Natural Contour Ultimes). Summer's strap-on visits Alex's mouth and Kate's vagina. Kate grows shuddery during T.J.'s oral attention and later puts her orgasm tally at four. T.J. and Alex's climaxes are unambiguous. T.J. gets a very focused look on her face and begs, "No more touching!" when orgasming. Alex quivers and declares, "YEAH! I'm coming!"

The grand finale is a double penetration for Alex back at the hotel suite. The action starts on the balcony, where Alex receives oral from Valentino and Jay. Both men get blowjobs, and Jay also scores a footjob. They all return indoors, where the other actresses are hanging out and playing with their vibrators. Jay gives Alex's ass a vigorous tonguefucking, and she eagerly presents her pussy to each man in doggie. The double penetration is also accomplished in doggie, with Valentino taking a top position at Alex's anus and Jay catching her vagina from behind. The two men come almost simultaneously, one on each of Alex's breasts. Alex, that lucky grrl, probably climaxes at least two additional times in this energetic final scene.

The behind-the-scenes featurette is a very nice extra. Although it doesn't provide in-depth information, it does include some bonus sex in the tour van, a blooper or two, and additional footage of Alex catching a 154-pound striped marlin (!).

Thumbs up: If I had to choose just one word to describe this movie, it would be "wholesome." Now, "wholesome" is not necessarily a word that's commonly associated with porn, but here it really seems to fit. The performers have a healthy and enthusiastic attitude toward sex; they love what they're doing, they're getting off on it and they want their partners to get off, too. There are real female orgasms in several places on this disc. Smiles and laughter are common.

The women are pretty in an accessible way. No one wears too much make-up. No one ever looks uncomfortable, in or out of clothes. And three out of four of the actresses still have their natural breasts (T.J. is augmented, but not outrageously so). Did I mention real female orgasms?

Thumbs down: There's no way to turn off the pop shot icon. In four of the scenes, it does vanish automatically after a few minutes, leaving behind an active area that is still clickable when I roll my mouse over it. This is not a very satisfactory solution, however, and it's part of the overall lackluster authoring on this DVD. See also the "Disc problems" section above.

Final analysis: It's been a tough decision to rate this disc as anything less than "very good." The performers all seem to be experiencing genuine pleasure, which I find both refreshing and arousing. I must admit that the navigation troubles are somewhat off-putting, however. If you're the type of viewer who needs to skip around in a scene rather than watching it in its entirety, this is not the DVD for you. Otherwise, I recommend it without hesitation!
