Review brief: Manhunters is an excellent Brad Armstrong feature film, given only an average blu-ray treatment. The movie is very strong, with good plot and acting. Unfortunately, the blu-ray treatment leaves much to be desired. The video quality does not reflect what blu-ray is capable of. Review brief: An x-rated version of "Story of O" is a great idea, but this attempt is a big disappointment. It doesn't help that none of these people could act cold in the snow, but the real problem is that the story has been drained of all its kinkiness. "Story of O" is the most famous Sadomasochism book ever written, but this version manages to dispense with all that nasty, politically incorrect S&M. Other than some fakey-fake "whipping" and the fact that all the girls are wearing leather collars and cuffs, the sex is about as plain vanilla as it comes. Where is the dominance and submission? Your typical episode of Rocco's "Animal Trainer" is about 5 times as kinky as this movie. The star, Carmen Luvana, doesn't have a submissive bone in her body. Indeed, the only slightly kinky scene is a lesbian scene in which Carmen is the dominant partner, not the submissive.

Review brief: Tanya Hyde was always a favorite of mine when she was working through Private. A big improvement with this relase through Stagliano's "Evil Empire" is that the scenes are much longer than was ever allowed by Private. My favorite scenes are the first and fourth scenes. I love the way the first scene begins with Jane Darling in a spinning white ball chair--awesomely imaginative. Unfortunately there is a marked lack of chapter stops. Although these scenes average 40 minutes in length, there is only one chapter stop at the beginning of each scene. What's up with that? Usually Evil Empire DVDs have plenty of chapter stops. Another weird thing about this film is the cultic symbology that keeps cropping up, such as the use of a stained glass window, brightly back-lit, featuring a red, five-pointed star inside a circle.

Review brief: This is a two-disk set, with one of the disks being HD. I played the HD disk on my computer and was completely blown away by remarkable video quality. It is super-sharp and brilliant, and takes full advantage of the incredibly beautiful backgrounds in Tahiti and Bora Bora. Of course, this is strictly couples fare with routine, non-edgy sex. The star is the Hi-Definition presentation and the incredibly gorgeous scenery. The Tera Patrick scene with Barrett Blade is not shot in HD, nor on an island, and it does not really belong in this movie. It seems as though they used some old footage so they could put Tera's name on the box-cover. That brought the overall rating down for me.

Review brief: Don't be fooled by the fact that this was directed by Radley Metzger, who directed such acknowledged classics as The Opening of Misty Beethoven. This film just doesn't come close to the level of Misty Beethoven, or Metzger's other efforts. The DVD was transfered from an extremely distressed print of the movie. This thing is simply terrible to look at, and there is little eroticism, despite the presence of the superstars of the era, including Leslie Bovee, Gloria Leonard, Constance Money, and Annette Haven. For example, Constance Money's scene consists only of a short handjob. About the only thing that saves this film from being a complete waste is the nasty, kinky S&M scene with C.J. Lang.

Review brief: I was blown away by "Loaded" and very impressed by "Devon Stripped," so I as really looking forward to this feature. I guess since I had already seen the outstanding production values in those films, I was expecting them in this one, and wasn't really that impressed. (Admittedly, if you've never seen one of Nic Andrews' Digital Playground films, you'll be very impressed with the high production values.) This is a ploty-heavy feature, and although Devon and Barret Blade do a nice acting job, the plot and the acting were not quite up to the standards of "Loaded," so I was disappointed. I was particularly turned off by the ending, which made no sense whatsoever. Also, the sex is extremely weak--short scenes that are standard and have no edge to them. For some reason, this didn't bother me with respect to "Loaded," but it began to annoy me this time around.

Review brief: This is one of the most intelligently written and acted xxx rated movies I have ever seen, and I've seen a lot of them. It's a buddy cop movie, which is a stereotype in mainstream movies, and has been done many times in adult, as well, but never this well. Barrett Blade and Eric Masterson approached director Nic Andrews saying they wanted to do a buddy cop flick, and Andrews wrote the script with them in mind, reproducing the way they normally talk to each other. Barrett and Eric then did an outstanding job bringing the thing to life. There's also an astonishing amount of shooting, explosions and pyrotechnics. Andrews also did an amazing job with the title sequence and some transitional helicopter shot sequences. This is one slick, very professional looking production. It must have had a generous budget, and the whole budget is on the screen. This is definitely a couples film, not a raincoater, because there is no anal sex, and the five sex scenes are all pretty much plain vanilla.

Directed by: Axel Braun

Review brief: This is probably the most ambitious feature film that Elegant Angel has ever attempted. Axel Braun and Patrick Collins really went all out with this film, and it is a marked departure from Elegant Angel's normal product. To begin with, the budget was alot more than they usually spend, and most of it is on the screen in the form of locations, cars, and excellent audio and video. There's even a song that Axel Braun wrote specifically for the feature, and Belladonna does a pretty decent job singing it. The plot is a love triangle between an older mobster, played by Patrick Collins, the mobster's son, played by Kurt Lockwood, and the mobster's much younger trophy wife, played by Ashley Long who is apparently from Australia. The father wants the son to go to law school, not to follow in his footsteps by becoming a mobster. The son is too much of a chip off the old block to go that way. Instead, he opens up a club in Europe, but gets crossways with one of his partners. The bad partner, played by an English actor, murders a girl and frames Lockwood for the murder.

Review brief: Robby D. cut his teeth doing a series of gonzo videos called "The Watcher" for Vivid Raw (Vivid's gonzo label) in the late 1990s. Although the series was obviously copying John Leslie's "Voyeur" series, and was also derivative of John Stagliano, Ben Dover, Seymore Butts, and Tom Byron, I remember being very favorably impressed with Robby D.'s product. He wasn't original, but he was very good at the gonzo stuff he was doing, and clearly had tremendous talent. Robby D. subsequently went to film school, and further honed his craft, and now Digital Playground is allowing him to put out very high quality films. I have recently seen a couple of his very original sex comedies, "Sex in the Valley" and "The Hitman," both starring Barrett Blade. In this movie, Barrett plays a hitman who works for Herschel Savage. He has twin .45 calibre automatic pistols that he has named "Mary Kate" and "Ashley," but when it comes to women, he can't seem to pull the trigger. Review brief: This Michael Raven-helmed film is a porn version of "Point Break" which starred Patrick Swayze as the leader of a gang of outlaw surfers, and Keanu Reeves, as the FBI agent assigned to bring him to justice. Although the premise is promising, the execution is execrable. Nobody in this thing can surf, and nobody can act, either. The only decent surf footage is on the menu. They didn't even go out to places in Orange County or Malibu, where people actually surf, and get some shots of people actually surfing. Instead, they shot the surf scenes in the bay, where the two foot waves break on the sand. Incredibly lame!! This is why people hate porn with plot. A good surfing porno is still waiting to be made, because this wasn't it. The sex scenes are just so-so, with the exception of one three-way with April, Randy Spears, and Pat Myne, which is pretty hot. There ain't nobody in the porn version as sexy as Lori Petty was in the mainstream original. The technical aspects are terrific, with excellent cinematography.

Directed by: Armand Weston

Review brief: This 1978 feature directed by "Armand Weston" is a good example of "golden age" adult filmmaking. The plot is a take off on the Oscar Wilde story, "The Picture of Dorian Grey." The protagonist's name has been changed from Dorian Grey to "Darrin Blue," (played amazingly by Wade Nichols). And instead of a painting, his youthful image is captured on a porn film that his liberated 1920's flapper girlfriend (Georgina Spelvin) secretly had made of them making love outdoors. When she shows it to him later, he wishes that the image on the film could get old, and that he could stay youthful forever. You might have guessed that that is exactly what happens. The 1930s have Wade Nichols doing a remarkable imitation of James Cagney, during the 1940s, he's doing Humphrey Bogart (and Annette Haven). During the 50s, he's doing James Dean and making love on his motocycle. During the 1960s, still as youthful as ever, he is, you guessed it, a hippie doing drugs and having an orgy. Since this was shot in the 1970s, that brings us up to the present.

Review brief: Someone, in commenting on classic porn from the 1970s, said that the goal was to make a movie that was still watchable with the sex taken out. That's the way Nic Andrews makes porn films. From the standpoint of plot, writing, acting, and cinematography, this film is way, way above average. This movie is worth watching even without the sex. It is an outstanding couples film, or film for people who are newbies to porn. Don't get me wrong, the sex is good, it's just that it isn't raunchy or cutting edge. Also the sex scenes are a little short; each should have been about five minutes longer. Digital Playground has done a really nice job with this disc. Review brief: Here is another terrific, high quality product from Private. The plot is borrowed from Alfred Hitchcock's "Vertigo" only instead of having vertigo, the protagonist has claustrophobia, specifically fear of tunnels. He was a police officer, but because he would not enter a tunnel, his partner was killed. So he quits the force and becomes a private detective. A magistrate hires him to tail his wife, who he fears may be suicidal. The movie clocks in at 1:55. There are six full sex scenes, all with anals, and a full bonus scene. All of it superbly lit and photographed by the great Antonio Adamo. The girls in this movie are not quite up to the standards of the superstars in the movies Adamo did in the Private/Penthouse series, but they are all very cute, and Mandy Bright and Julia Taylor are both gorgeous.

Review brief: Brad Armstrong, who also directed Wicked pictures' "Conquest" and "Flashpoint," directed this picture in association with Vivid and Adam and Eve. As a result, the production values are higher and the transfer to DVD better than in most Vivid discs. There's always a gimmick in a Brad Armstrong Feature; think of the rigged sailing ship in "Conquest" or the fire engines in "Flashpoint." In this picture, it is the exotic animals: elephants and camels. The disc also features stunning costumes and very nice interior locations. Technically, the disc is very good. The audio and video were outstanding, just about as good as in "Flashpoint," and far better than most vivid product. Ralph Parfait did the cinematography, and it is excellent. Every one of the sex scenes was a winner. Dyanna Lauren is a very, very lovely woman. If anyone cares, the disc features an extremely accomplished cast of studs, including Vince Voyeur, Jon Dough, Steve Drake, Peter North, and T.T. Boy. Veronica Hart does an excellent job in a non-sex role and as narrator.

Review brief: Films like this built the reputation of the "golden age" of adult, i.e., the years 1975 through 1982. This 1981 film is, of course, a spoof on the 1980 mainstream film "9 to 5" that starred Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Dolly Parton, and Dabney Coleman. In the adult version their parts are play by Loni Sanders, Annette Haven, Lisa DeLeew, and Herschel Savage. There's even a very nice theme song take-off on the famous Dolly Parton song that went with the mainstream movie. Plot and acting are superior to most seen today, and the sex scenes not only fit the plot, they advance the plot. Although the sex is by today's standards strictly couples fare, this is still a very hot movie and well worthwhile. Technically the disc is quite good, although the reverse angle gimmick was simply annoying. The video quality and audio are very good, given the age of the source material.

Review brief: Most of what I wrote about "The Ecstasy Girls" also applies to this film. This is a 1982 Harold Lime production, directed by Robert McCallum. With Veronica Hart and Annette Haven, there's more star power in this flick, but the final product is not quite as good as the wonderful "Ecstasy Girls." The plot is "Ecstasy Girls" in reverse. Review brief: This 1980 New York production may be the only Gerard Damiano video I've ever seen. Typcially, "golden age" adult movies are pretty tame by today's standards. That isn't the case with this one. Right away there's an anal scene, followed shortly by a double penetration. There's also a scene where a man is penetrated by a dildo. In the original movie, there was a fisting scene and a golden shower scene, both of which have been cut from this dvd (and, unlike Arrow's DVD of "Candy Stripers" are unfortunately not hidden in an easter egg). The plot involves a futuristic society called "Alpha Blue," in which the prevailing custom is sex without commitment or attachment. Herschel Savage (early in his amazing three decades-long career) is happy with this state of affairs, but R. Bolla pines for the good old days of love and romance. Bolla decides that he will woo Satisfier 805 (Lysa Thatcher) into falling in love with him. Bottom line: this is an amazing classic feature, one of the best golden age movies not made by Henry Paris (aka Radley Metzger).

Review brief: This 1978 golden age classic by Bob Chinn is a lot of good, dirty fun. The set is convincing, and many have thought it was shot in a hospital although it was really shot on a sound stage in San Francisco. The acting is reasonably good, although the plot isn't complicated: a bunch of hospital patients who are more horny than sick, and three candy stripers willing to serve any way they can, including sexually. Many have commented that the women in classic porn are not as good looking as today's crop. Although that is generally true, Amber Hunt, for example, could hold her own even in today's porn biz. Arrow has done an outstanding job restoring sound and picture, and one of the cutest things about this movie is the song that was composed and performed for it. The fact that golden age adult films frequently had a song written specifically for them is one of the things that separates them from the current industry.

Directed by: Robert McCallum

Review brief: Here is a Harold Lime/Robert McCallum classic from 1982 that is still famous over 20 years later. It won six adult film critic awards, including best picture. Because it was filmed near the end of the "golden age," there aren't quite as many exterior shots as there would have been in movies a few years older. The plot involves a madam named Amanda (Veronica Hart) who, as a favor to her former pimp and lover (Jamie Gillis), sets up an S & M session for a local politician. The girls that she sends for this session (Lisa de Leeuw and Samantha Fox) are later found dead. R. Bolla plays the straight-arrow homicide detective trying to solve the case, without much help from Amanda. To make matters worse, there's a corrupt vice squad cop (Ron Jeremy) who is constantly getting in the way. By today's standards, this is couples' fare, with relatively short sex scenes, and loads of plot. It's so good-hearted, it could almost be on the Family Channel. Veronica Hart gets to over-act and ham it up ridiculously. It's a good movie, but a poor DVD.

Review brief: This Cal-Vista shot-on-film feature from around 1984 has very little to recommend it. The sex is routine. Even the delightful Janey Robbins, one of the unsung heroines of early porn, is largely wasted. The plot has stewardess Juliet Anderson wanting to be the first female pilot on her airline, with sister Tara Aire trying to help her along. There are alot of shots inside airliner shells, and outside of windows during flights, and pirate shots at airports, but we've seen it all before in better films from that era. This film features an extended mud wrestling scene, so if you can remember the mud wrestling fad of the 1980s, you can date this film. On the bright side, the film quality is excellent, and the transfer to DVD is very good as well. Technically the disc is very good.

Review brief: Here is another porn film that follows the time-honored convention of parodying a mainstream movie or television show. Shot on a soundstage in San Francisco in 1982, the movie has the look and feel of the hit seventies and early 80s TV show, M*A*S*H. In fact, the overhead footage at the beginning of the film is the same outdoor set built for the mainstream show. Paul Thomas plays the Hawkeye character, called Jaybird, and Joey Silvera plays the Radar character. The female lead, hot hips Henderson, is played by Jessie St. James, who looks remarkably like hot lips Hoolihan. St. James does a remarkable acting job, and even seems to have some of Loretta Swits style and mannerisms. Unfortunately, this films close similarity to the show it is parodying is about the only thing it has going for it. The sex scenes are brief, a couple of them lack money shots, the women are average in the looks department, and the script is lame.

Review brief: It's always fun to compare a Vivid DVD to a VHS tape of the same film. You never know what cuts and changes will have been made to the DVD version. This film was originally shot around 1992-1993. The movie opens with Bonnie and Clyde (Ashlyn Gere and Randy West) robbing a bank. Although the real Bonnie and Clyde operated in East Texas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma, the landscape here looks suspiciously like Southern California. The first scene is between Randy and Ashlyn, and it has been re-edited and shortened. The music is downright bizzare; the DVD features Strauss waltzes such as the Blue Danube waltz. Now, I'm no big fan of the porn Jazz-o-lite of the tape version, but this waltz music is really inappropriate. The scene ends in a long and very unerotic shot of Randy masturbating to climax. Was that necessary? The next scene features Racquel Darrien, solo, masturbating. (There's a masturbation theme here). The video quality sucks -pixelation galore-- and the scene has been shortened by two or three minutes.

Review brief: This film was made back in 1996, when Seymour Butts was in a short-lived partnership with Ultimate Pictures, which was in association with Adam & Eve. Although this is not one of Seymour Butts' familiar "home videos", he is listed as "director of erotica." A sequel in name only to Cameron Grant's "Dinner Party;" this film is directed by "Willy Red." The formula is typical: rent a nice house, a nice car, get some porn starlets together and get after it. There are ten scenes including an orgy scene at the end of the picture. There's a strong emphasis on interracial sex; the movie has both Sean Michaels and Mr. Marcus. The first scene is a lesbian coupling of Tyler Sweet and Lisa Ann. In a warm scene, Tyler uses a strap-on on Lisa Ann. Almost all the natural noises are muted and jazz soundtrack takes their place. The next scene has Mr. Marcus paired with red-headed Nanna, another merely warm pairing. The third scene features Sean Michaels and two blondes in a swimming pool.

Review brief: There was an excellent film called "Bad Wives" directed by Paul Thomas for Vivid, and featuring the incredibly beautiful Dyanna Lauren and Melissa Hill. Unfortunately, that movie is not available on DVD. The DVD that Vivid is marketing under the name of "Bad Wives" has been cut to ribbons. It should really be called "Outtakes from Bad Wives." Comparing the VHS version with the DVD, I counted over 20 separate cuts, some of them lengthy. We're not talking just cutting out dialogue; sex scenes have been cut up, too, including some of the best parts. The best scene is between Jon Dough and Dyanna Lauren, taking place on a stairway. Large chunks of it have been excised. Even the final three-way between Steven St. Croix, Melissa Hill, and Dyanna Lauren, which should have been sacrosanct if no other scene was, had cuts in it. As presented in the DVD, the plot makes no sense whatsoever, whereas in the video version, the film has at least an adequate plot. I now know why other highly praised Vivid films I have seen only on DVD, such as "Bobby Sox" and "Beautiful", were choppy and made no plot sensel.
