I think there is a very good reason why many hold the classic era of porn (70’s, 80’s) in such high regard. For me when I first saw films like this, they were normally passed to me on very low quality VHS, sometimes with no sound, or a picture so bad it was almost unwatchable. Porn back then was the holy grail. It was next to impossible to widely obtain (at least here in the UK) and just seeing real sex was amazing. Now it is different. Hardcore for one, is legal in the UK. Porn is now on DVD and the picture quality is never an issue (at least by no means the issue it was) and also, such beautiful women are ready and willing to shed their inhibitions for your viewing enjoyment. It is a different world now, and for me I have come to the realisation that yes, porn in the past was special – because it was so forbidden and unobtainable – but porn now is in a different league. You get more bang for your buck, the sex is super hot (if you know what you are looking for) and pretty much everyone’s tastes are accounted for. It is an incredible achievement that the industry has been able to move on in such a way.

Commentary
So we come to this DVD – a well put together compilation of some seventies and eighties high-lights, showcasing the obvious talents of say, John C. Holmes (his huge penis still impressive today as it ever was), Jill Kelly, Nina Hartley, Marilyn Chambers (the perfect girl next door gone nasty?), and what classic compilation wouldn’t be complete without Ron Jeremy – the porn legend that brought his own style of cheeky comedy and I must admit, screen presence to adult entertainment. I enjoy watching his two scenes on this DVD because he has such a great personality – I do admire him, and how he has become such a cult icon, despite not having the looks of say, a Toni Ribas or even Mr Holmes. Of course, he made up for any shortcomings with a very large cock – not as big as Holmes (but then again, hardly any were).

The scenes on this DVD do vary in quality, and some are just plain weird (take a bow Devil in Miss Jones 2), whilst others are supremely erotic (the oily gang-bang in a factory from Femmes De Sade for example). It is great to see how different these films were (mainly to their silly music and bad fashion-sense, ridiculous hair and tons of genital fuzz). I still think today’s porn needs more women with hairy vaginas (for me the only way a pussy should be presented), but oh well, maybe that is a niche market these days. Also it was interesting to see that the old style can be compared to today quite well, with Amber Lynne’s incredible deep throat cock sucking in a scene from Devil in Miss Jones 3 comparable to the talents of Belladonna!! Yet I do not think the scenes grabbed me enough to want to pursue this style, as my temptation to purchase The Opening of Misty Beethoven has been quashed somewhat, as a result.

I still think the likes of Seka, Christy Canyon and of course Marilyn Chambers are equally as strokable masturbation fodder as say, Bella or Gauge or even Jenna Jameson, they just did not bring anything to the mix today’s porn hasn’t already got.

DVD Extras
Jim Holliday & Jill Kelly give brief but informative on-camera introductions to nearly every scene and this is great for newcomers. Jill Kelly, a porn legend looks amazing and even gets naked as the DVD progresses -but don’t worry people – we do get a scene or two with her in as well, and it has to be said she’s every bit the star she is known to be! The 26 scenes on the DVD also have commentary by Jim & Jill and this is another valuable addition and makes for great listening and another reason to even view your least favourite scenes. Add to this a few trailers and information on other titles, and overall it’s pretty good. I would have liked some stills of the porn movies or detailed box art slideshows or something, but oh well…

Final thoughts
If you loved the classic era you’ll probably have some of these movies already (with the likes of Insatiable and Devil in Miss Jones series being easy to obtain on DVD), but on the other hand if like me, you just wanted a good nostalgia fix, then this DVD will bring back a few memories and probably make you see today’s porn in a better light. Yes, there is a lot of very similar titles out there, and Gonzo has taken over the industry in a way I am not entirely agreeable to, but if you know what you like, what turns you on, there’s something out there.
