Starring: Dennis Lincoln, Dominique, Ryan Block, Ricky Parker, Rolf, Duke Johnson, Cougar Cash
Review brief: Cast: Ryan Block, Cougar Cash, Dominique, Duke Johnson, Dennis Lincoln, Ricky Parker, Deven Rexman, Rolf, Jeremy Strong, Ty Thomas and Dex Westin. Director: William Careley Writer: Edward James Production date: The exemption statement indicates the movie was made before July 3, 1995. This appears to be an older movie, but more recent than the pre-condom era. The VCA copyright is 2002. Length: 82 min. Extras: Five trailers, catalog information on four additional titles, and a slide show with 20 photos. Audio/visual quality: The camerawork and editing are adequate, but not always as satisfying as they might be. There are no explicit initial penetration shots; we do get some nice facial expressions, however. Very minor problems with lighting, shadows and soft focus occur in a couple of scenes. The music is unremarkable, usually sitting so far in the background that it's barely audible. A bit of dubbing is obvious in a few places. Faint background noises are present (including at least one direction).

Director: Anthony Spinelli Production date: ©1979 in end credits; original release date of 1980 according to IAFD; DVD production date of 6/5/01 on box cover. Length: 80 min. Extras: Diesel's review at AdultDVDEmpire.com reports that the DVD includes a gallery of random freeze-framed stills. I am unable to view it on my copy, however. The only other "extras" are ads. Audio/visual quality: Print quality is very rough for first few minutes. Fortunately, the worst flickering subsides before the sex begins. The presence of blemishes, artifacts and video noise is probably acceptable given the age of the movie. The camerawork and editing are quite nicemuch less choppy than a few of the other classics I've seen. The emphasis falls on medium-length shots, with pleasing pans between faces and genitals.

Directed by: Jules Jordan
Review brief: Cast: Alexa Rae, Ryan Conner, Monica Sweetheart, Shyla, August Night; featuring Lexington Steele. Director: Jules Jordan Production date: 3/15/02 Length: 132 min. Extras: A 26-min. featurette with bloopers, behind-the-scenes and extra sex footage; fetish menu; photo gallery with 57 images; filmographies for all female cast; biography for Jules Jordan; cast list for each scene. Audio/visual quality: Jules does an excellent job of making the video look good under high key lighting conditions. The camera's shadow sometimes falls across the performers' bodies. In a few places, sunlight also appears to be reflecting (refracting?) off the camera optics. These flaws are infrequent and short-lived, however. The handheld camerawork is smooth, the angles are pleasing and the focus is sharp. The location for Lex the Impaler 2 is the same ultra-hip house used in the first volume. It's a very attractive setting, and this time, we get to see a couple new rooms. The audio quality is also generally quite good.

Director: Anders Manga Production date: 7/2/02 Length: 91 min. Extras: A 3-min. bonus scene, 8 min. of interviews (Keri, Kylie K., Victoria), "Glamour" music video, four diary entries (poems related to the scenes) and about a minute of additional fun footage. Audio/visual quality: This is a highly aesthetic production. The provocative images of Girl Show 2 serve as a creative tribute to the beauty and the insanity of female passion. The dynamic visual effects include jump edits, color shifts, monochrome footage, intercut text and more. These are generally concentrated in the early part of each scene. To the director's credit, the picture grows steadier as the masturbation gains momentum, providing sustained looks at the actresses' increasing excitement. The camera angles, lighting and mix of shots are all extremely pleasing.

Audio/visual quality: Pandora is a relatively new studio, and they are still working on refining the technical aspects of their DVDs. Even so, I would rate this disc's audiovisual quality as somewhat above average. The camerawork occasionally feels a little conservative, but the angles are generally solid and satisfying. The sets are dark by design, yet the action is easily seen. Grain and artifacts appear here and there. Other minor blemishes include sporadic soft focus shifts, a slight internal reflection in the camera (in scene two only) and a crew member's shadow on the wall (in scene three only). The musical style varies widely from techno to classical.

Director: David Stanley Production date: 4/18/00 (box); 2/28/02 (opening statement) Length: 76 min. Extras: Fetish menu, multiple angles, nine bonus scenes, four trailers and a slide show with 18 photos (of Devon only). Audio/visual quality: The video quality is adequate. The sets and lighting are fairly decent, but the edits between soft and hard-core footage feel disjointed. There are minor problems with mushy focus, too many extreme close-ups, weird framing and medium-length shots that chop off the performers' heads. There's also a flickering line across the bottom of the screen. The audio is better, with a soundtrack of reasonably listenable hard rock and jazz. The music is well balanced with the sex sounds, and the overall volume and clarity are also good. False advertising: Devon is the cover model and receives top billing in the credits. However, Gina Ryder is unquestionably the star of the movie.

Girl Show does contain some noticeable problems with artifacts, soft focus adjustments and color bleeds across high contrast areas. The camerawork is solidly above average, however. The angles nearly always let me see exactly what I want to see. Mirrors are aptly incorporated into three of the scenes. There is judicious use of a limited amount of black and white footage. The softly percussive ambient music enhances the mood very well. The music is generally the only audio at the beginning of the scenes, with live sounds coming into the mix near the middle. The overall volume would benefit from a slight boost, especially during the featurette.

The focus stays consistently sharp (except for menus and credits, which creatively incorporate a few intentionally fuzzy images). Minor problems with shadows and overlighting are present, but not often enough to interfere with my overall enjoyment of the DVD. There's a low audio hum in places, though it's not overly distracting. The balance is occasionally a little off, especially in scene four. The audio clarity is otherwise good; dialog is very easy to understand, and there's no obvious dubbing.

Review brief: Cast: Majella, Sunrise Adams, Kennedy, Nikita Denise, Ann Marie, Dillon Day, Jay Ashley, Lee Stone, Kyle Stone, Tony Pounds. (All performers, male and female, are identified by clips in the credits, which is a thoughtful touch.) Director: Andre Madness Production date: 8/24/01 Length: 101 min. Extras: Well designed sex menu, 9 min. bloopers, a slide show with 20 photos, and 4 previews. Audio/visual quality: The camerawork nicely mixes long, medium and close-up shots.

Review brief: Cast: Julia Taylor, Betty Anderson, Karma, Nicolette Moore, Maria Glasgow, Linda Kiss (aka Genvievre), Eva Mercedes, Frank Major, Nick Lang, Bruno Assix, David Perry, Frank Gun. Director: Antonio Adamo Production date: 1/00 (opening statement); 2/00 (box); 1999 (VHS release) Length: 116 min. (feature length, including both the regular and alternate endings) Extras: Language options in English, French, German, Spanish and Italian; subtitles available for four additional languages; alternate final scene; 7 min. behind-the-scenes featurette; trailer for feature and five other releases; photo gallery with 38 images; production notes; biographies for all female cast (which should be taken with a block of salt, since I've learned from an industry insider that many Private bios are fictitious). Audio/visual quality: The visual quality is outstanding. The camera work is truly excellent, providing interesting angles, varied depth of field, smooth pans and sharp focus. Special effects (blurs, slo mo, monochrome, etc.) are fairly frequent but quite aesthetically pleasing.

Review brief: Cast: Ashlyn Gere, Leena, Felicia, Sandi Beach, Alex Sanders, Marc Wallice, Tom Byron and Nick East. Director: Layne Parker Production date: 10/25/99 (box); 7/28/93 (feature) Length: 82 min. Extras: Eight biographies, ten previews and 33 bonus scenes. Audio/visual quality: The camerawork is sure and steady, with a nice mix of long, medium and close-up shots. A few shadows fall on the action, but they're not too bad. Audio is a bit hollow and spotty in places. As might be expected in the outdoor settings, there's a little noise from wind, airplanes, a police siren, etc. Some of the music is markedly better than typical porno tunes from the early 1990s. Several pieces have a pleasing "unplugged" quality, featuring acoustic guitar.

Audio/visual quality: The focus is slightly soft in places, but overall quite good. Lighting is adequate. Crew members are infrequently visible along the edges of the set or outside the windows. Enhanced motion appears here and there. A strong and typically fast beat drives the music. The "dance floor" groove is occasionally not to my taste, but overall, it's very listenable and well-balanced with the sex sounds.

Extras: Ten previews and 24 bonus scenes. This is a double-sided disc, with most of the extras on the flip side. I am unable to find the biographies advertised on the box. Audio/visual quality: During portions of this feature, the audio is imperfectly synched with the video (the actors' mouths move first, and their voices follow a fraction of a second later). Video noise disrupts the picture in a few places, but it's extremely brief and not highly noticeable. Crew members' shadows are occasionally visible. Emphasis is placed on medium length shots, with above average attention to facial expressions.

"Tails Trilogy" interview with Asia and Bud Lee. Some extras mentioned on the box (most notably the "Wolves" featurette by Simon Wolf) are missing. This apparently is an honest mistake; see Astroknight's review for details. Audio/visual quality: First-rate special effects make this a truly magical feature. Director: Antonio Passolini Production date: 6/97 Length: 132 min. Extras: None except a static chapter menu and four criminally short biographies. The disc's length and quality, however, largely mitigate the absence of extras. Audio/visual quality: Creative color effects saturate the hues in some scenes. This in no way detracts from the movie's heat. Enhanced motion ("slo-mo") is judiciously employed. Close-up shots are remarkably well focused. The music fits the action, yet is strong enough to stand as an independent soundtrack.

Review brief: Cast: Asia Carrera, Ashton Moore, Temptress, Taylor St. Claire, James Bonn, Jennifer Lee, Halli Aston, Gina Ryder, Alec Metro, Stephanie Swift, Mark Davis, Randy Spears, Lexington Steele, Cheyenne Silver, Brick Majors and more Director: Nick Orleans Production date: 6/11/98 (box); 9/10/98 (opening statement); 11/17/98 (ending statement) Length: 132 min. (box); 135 min. (actual running time, with credits) Extras: Animated chapter menu, three biographies, photo gallery and little else. Audio/visual quality: Visual quality is adequate. Sets and scenery are substantially above average. The music, which has an interesting "world beat" flavor, is exceptional throughout the feature. Dialog is clear; dubbing is nicely synched with the action. Why I chose this DVD: XXXmovie-wise, I'm still wet behind the ears (and elsewhere). Prior to this DVD, I'd seen only four adult films--one soft-core feature at a hotel and three hard-core features on videotape at home. I selected this title based solely on the vendor's description.
