Review brief: Gary Graver was one of hardcore cinema's true master filmmakers along with Metzger, Weston, Damiano, DeRenzy, and Costello (which about names all the greats). While Society Affairs is one of his less known titles, it ranks as high in Graver's filmography as his first three masterpieces, 3 A.M., V The Hot One, and Ecstasy Girls.

Review brief: Armand Weston's third feature The Taking of Christina remains both his most visceral and dynamic film even over 30 years after it was made. Featuring excellent performances from its three leads, especially Bree Anthony, solid scripting and direction from Weston and a fine original score from Jack Justice, Christina is one of the strongest hardcore features from the mid 70s.

Review brief: One of the best American hardcore films ever made (by director Gary Graver) has been given a TERRIBLE DVD release by Caballero. A true genre masterpiece which features masterful performances from Veronica Hart, Richard Bolla, and especially Lisa DeLeeuw and Samantha Fox. A superior film in every respect which deserves a lot more than it has gotten on DVD. For that reason, pay more and get an old VHS.

Review brief: Armand Weston was one of the finest directors ever to make hardcore films. Although he usually crafted dark and depressing tales, this 1978 film was his foray into comedy. With a fantastic cast of regulars, and Leslie Bovee as the female lead, Weston crafted a wonderful, skilfully acted, sumptuously shot, and cleverly written parody of films of American culture from the 30s to the 60s.

Review brief: Nu Tech's release of Gary Graver's 1975 classic film 3 A.M. is certainly one of the finest classic releases to come from any porn company. This superior film with masterful performances from Georgina Spelvin and one shot wonder Charles Hooper was the first hardcore feature from former Orson Welles protégé Graver (Amanda By Night, V The Hot One). Graver skillfully combines Bergman like cinematographic techniques with almost existential philosophies, resulting in one of the most accomplished hardcore films ever made.

Review brief: Peter Balakoff (aka Ted Roter) was one of many former exploitation film directors turned hardcore film directors to make ends meat. Some did well while others floundered. Roter is somewhere in the middle. Although his films are frequently poorly shot and feature less than pleasing production values, he makes up for these minor faults through his surprisingly smart scripts and above average acting from his cast of relative unknowns. Here we have two of his least seen films, Hollywood She-Wolves and Paul, Lisa, And Caroline. Although She Wolves is nothing more than a run of the mill porn, PLC is a surprisingly insightful look at a menage-a-trois lifestyle. Roter's stock actress Gena Lee is Caroline, just married to Paul (played handsomely by director Roter) who decide to engage in swinging with Paul's sometimes fling Lisa. Roter creates strong, realistic characters with real problems which are handled with maturity and class. Gena Lee gives another wonderful performance proving that she certainly was one of the finest thespians in the whole of the industry during the late 70s.

Review brief: This will be the first of my reviews of the "Cult 70s Porno Directors" series from ABA. This collection of three films by true schlock filmmaker Ray Dennis Steckler is a truly awful grouping of terrible films. They're pretty much all the same film in that none of them has a plot and for some reason all involve roller skates. Go figure. Steckler, who also made horror themed porn under the moniker Sven Christian, was never looked at as even a good director outside of the hardcore industry and thus the reduction of his already miniscule budgets and the inclusion of hardcore sex into his films makes them even more tedious as entertainment. I suppose the sex scenes could be described as "erotic" but that would have to be from a very jaded perspective. There is a lot of sex though if that makes this package any more enticing. Overall the films are of OK AV quality. All from VHS tapes with Indian Lady faring best, but all being watchable enough to be able to make out the "action." All also appear to be uncut (though I couldn't image such crap being cut anyway).

Review brief: Alex DeRenzy produced more than a few good films during the 1970s but he also produced more than a few awful ones. This one falls into the second category. Simply a dumb way to make money off a gimmick. Long Jeanne Silver was a New York runaway who made her acting debut in Shaun Costello's Waterpower in 1976. She then came to San Francisco landing on The Mitchell Brother's doorstep. The Mitchells picked her up and put her in live sex shows. Soon washed up, DeRenzy decided to use her in one of his hardcore quickies and shot a standard vignette film with her peculiarity as the centerpiece. Now for those of you who don't know where Long Jeanne got her name, well...She doesn't have one of her legs (yes, you read that right) and uses the stump the same way gay boys use their arms! So Long Jeanne Silver (the film) is just that, consisting of scene after scene of Long Jeanne sticking her long john in lots of girls (and even one boy in by far the film's funniest scene).

Review brief: Tis a shame that great film like this are treated like dirt by the companies that release them. Gerard Damiano's powerful and majestically shot masterpiece inspired by the great French Novel "The Story Of O" is one of the finest hardcore films EVER made by one of the genre's finest directors. Jamie Gillis is Jason, a wealthy socialite who discovers he is dying of a rare (although unnamed) desease. He thus "adopts" a young woman, Joanna (Teri Hall) to keep him company during his final days. She however is unaware of his ailments. Their relationship quickly turns from one of short term lovers to a violent bondage filled endurance test for poor Joanna who is tormented in just about every way possible. Slowly, as their profane relationship continues to develop, Jason becomes weaker and weaker due to his mysterious ailment while Joanna grows stronger and stronger through her torments... Damiano's great strengths as a director are present in every aspect of this masterpiece.
