Review brief: I was looking forward to Adam & Eves Adult Stars at Home. I dont know why exactly. I dont typically watch such shows about mainstream celebrities; Im not a particular fan of the Behind the Scenes features that are a regular addition to DVDs. But I do enjoy learning something about the private lives of porn stars. Or maybe I crave reassurance that the people involved are involved by choice. Whatever the reason, I was, as I say, looking forward to watching this film. And, initially at least, I wasnt disappointed. At its best, Adult Stars at Home is hopelessly amateurish, but I expected that. Its even a little amusing the way the cameraman, no doubt so used to filming sex scenes, could never quite work out how to get a good shot of a room in any of the four houses he visits. (Once the amusement wears off, of course, its simply frustrating. Heres one guy whose Hollywood aspirations will never come to fruition.) The home tours are little better: theyre badly paced and meandering.

Review brief: Love Muffins has a lot going for it: a silly storyline right out the 80s, attractive performers giving good performances, sexual variety, good-looking sets, and high production values. It should have been a better film. It would have been, too, if a better director had been at the helm. I wish it werent so. Jim Enright admits that his viewing preference is girl/girl. He says he was lucky Wicked allowed him to include two girl/girl scenes in this movie, instead of the usual one. I cant help feeling a certain fondness for a guy who bucks tradition in exactly the manner I like to see it bucked. The frustrating fact is, however, that it amounts to very little if hes incapable of giving his scenes, lesbian or otherwise, any real pop. Joelean stars as the inheritor of her grandmothers magic muffin recipe. A secret ingredient, crushed mandrake root, turns the muffins into aphrodisiacs. It takes a bigger woman that Joelean to keep the family secret: she decides to get rich in the muffin-making business.

Review brief: Private Castings 11, which bills itself as a unique collection in which Pierre Woodman takes you behind the scenes and shows you the secrets of his castings and backstage performances, is a film for those who enjoy all those Behind the Scenes features on other discs. It isnt a sex film in the ordinary sense; its more of an extended documentary that shows us how one director introduces himself to potential female talent and then, through interviews, tries to gauge their suitability for his films. Following the interviews, we see the girls in action, in excerpts from photo shoots and movies. Woodmans typical interview takes place in a hotel bedroom. If the girl hasnt heard of him or doesnt know what he does for a living, a couple of explicit magazines within arms reach of the girls help clarify matters. Then he asks them to strip, turn, and, finally, to assume the doggy-style position on the bed, looking back over their shoulder at the camera.

Review brief: Dr. G is Axel Braun, director and periodic star of The Squirting Adventures of Dr. G. And what does Dr. G say to the critics who suggest that he isnt making the girls in his films squirt at all, that in fact theyre just peeing? He says, Lend me your girlfriend. Hes kidding, right? What self-respecting guy would even think of turning his girlfriend over to a guy who makes a film as half-assed as this one? What were talking about here is a film with nine sex scenes; that is, one sex scene repeated nine times. The way it works is this. Axel talks briefly to a girl then we cut to him fingering her. She squirts. Then, as Axel explains to one girl, if a guy makes a girl squirt, its customary for her to make a guy squirt, too. So we get the blowjob. Then the cumshot. Then Axel speaks to the next girl, and the whole cycle repeats itself. Over and over, again and againuntil a Gilligans Island rerun starts to look like a better use of our time. Ill tell you: the best thing about this movie is Axel himself, or rather his attitude. Hes a cheerful guy and occasionally amusing.

Review brief: I dont mind that Paul Thomas seems to think porn scenes are too longmany of them arebut in Believe It or Not 2 the director goes too far in the other direction: most of the scenes are too short. This is a 70-minute film, and each of its five sex scenes is preceded by an interview, the gist of which is dramatically fleshed out as the scene begins. It doesnt leave a lot of time for the sex. Well, at least it never gets boring. The films conceit is that only three of its five stories are true; the discs last chapter reveals which are fact and which fiction. (I got three right.) The idea works because the storytellers are porn stars and therefore just about anything seems possible. A couple having sex on a pool table in a crowded bar? A porn star screwing the security guard after signing autographs in a video store? Why not? If we believe this film, the porn-star stereotype was honestly come by; nothing in this film is so far out that it strains credulity. The scene that comes closest to doing so, however, is the films least appealing scene.

Review brief: Sunrise (a.k.a. Private Tropical 2) is a film directed by an Italian, featuring talent from the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Australia, shot on location in Cannes, France, and Santo Domingo in the Caribbean Islands. And it proves, if nothing else, that sex has no national boundaries. Sunrise is, I suppose, a couples film. That is, it has a plot, takes a more romantic approach to lovemaking (in setting if not always in mood), and focuses almost exclusively on the male/female bond. The story involves an island in the Caribbean that two rival development companies wish to purchase for its potentially lucrative possibilities as a tourist resort. Caught in the middle are Suzy and Jamie, two co-workers who end up on opposite sides in this battle for the beaches. The film is offered in several different languages with at least four subtitle options. What isnt clear is whether the actors are speaking a common tongue. Indeed, I rather doubt it.
