Initial Expectations: I have pretty high expectations for Outlaw Ladies since it’s been nominated for Best Classic Release on DVD by AVN and from reading reviewer’s review.
Initial Reaction: It’s a fun movie with hot sex. I can see why it was Hustler’s best film of the year in 1981.
Who Should Watch It : Fans of classic porn, real women, and fun sex
Who Should Avoid It: Fans of more extreme sex
Audio /Video Quality: For being twenty years old, Outlaw Ladies looks and sounds very good. The audio is normally clear and well balanced, although there are a few minor problems in a few places. The video has some grain, but it doesn’t overtake the picture like in some releases. Mostly, it just looks like it was shot on film and handled pretty well. The colors also come across pretty good and there aren’t many lighting problems. There are a few relics that appear now and then, but they’re very few and far between.
Music: The music has a nice range to it. Some of it is pretty typical, but it also has one of my favorite classical music pieces in it as well. There’s even some vocals during the music. Almost all of it is very well balanced with the rest of the audio.
Menus: Not surprisingly, it’s VCA’s standard menu. The chapter menu lets you jump to any of the five scenes from a clip of the scene without identifying who’s in it or the scene number. If you wish to jump to a specific scene, you can jump to one of four scenes based on the woman in it on a different menu.
The Feature: Outlaw Ladies follows several women on their sexual adventures in the early eighties. There isn’t really a plot line running through the movie, instead they’re mentioned in each others conversations in other segments. The women are all connected by being “outlaws” who get their sex when they want it and how they want it rather than staying confined in their marriages.
Juliet Anderson, a very attractive and realistic looking blonde, starts out with hired stud Ron as Jody Maxwell watches. Juliet sucks his cock while playing with all her bits and pieces while making him squeeze his cock so he doesn’t cum before she wants him to. Rather than having him eat her pussy, she instead has him lie back and starts fucking him, once again guiding him to do it just as she wants him to. It’s also fun to watch this scene to look back on two of today’s best directors working together much earlier in their careers.

Merle is kind of out of it through much of the scene, and constantly seeking Richard’s approval for what she’s doing, which fits her character very well. She starts out giving him some nice oral attention before he goes down on her. Merle gets into it very well as Richard climbs up on her and fucks her, finishing him off with a little tit fucking and head. She ends the scene taking his spunk spray on her chest and sucking the last few drops out. It’s not quite as good a scene as the ones preceding it, but keeps the characters very nicely throughout it.
Jody Maxwell and Samantha Fox make a trip to a scummy bar, where they pick up Joey Silvera, looking much the same as he does now, in the next scene. They make their way up to a scummy room where the girls wait for Joey on the bed. They don’t do anything to each other, instead waiting for Joey to remove their panties and eat their pussies. As Joey starts working on their pussies, they start to pet each other a little before joining together to suck Joey’s cock. Joey fucks Samantha missionary style before having Jody suck him to a climax. It’s the weakest of the scenes, mostly because the lighting is fairly poor in the scene. It fits the dirty hotel room feel of the scene, but it’s hard to get too sexy if you can’t see much.
Although it doesn’t have as strong a plot as other classic pornos, Outlaw Ladies still works extremely well and is almost as couples friendly as other classic pornos. There’s a little bit of anal, but it’s worked into the scenes very well rather than feeling like it’s time for an anal scene. The women are also handled a little different. They’re clearly in control in all the scenes, and often don’t even get completely naked. It makes for a nicely difference movie that’s very worthwhile to watch.
Extras: The photo gallery lasts about two and a half minutes with about seven seconds per full screen shot. There’s also a list of other titles in the VCA Classics line, internet information, and contact information.

Overall: Currently, Outlaw Ladies can be found online for between $17 and $25 with many stores offering it for under $20. Although there isn’t really anything here for extras, it’s still a great movie with a very good transfer. It has a heat that’s rarely seen in many of today’s movies, and the chemistry is also much better. There isn’t much plot, but it doesn’t hold back the movie.
Note to VCA: With classic releases like this, it would be great to have extras such as interviews with people who were originally in it reflecting back on it (I assume you still know how to reach Veronica Hart) or commentaries by people who were in adult films at the time the movie was being made. Extras like this are some of what makes other companies classic releases much better DVDs.
