Neu Wave Hookers Review

Initial Thoughts
I was greatly disappointed by McKai's first feature, art School Sluts but I'm going to give his work another shot.

The Film
It is first and foremost important to mention that McKai's format is Video. His productions could only exist within that medium and here, McKai does his best to fill this video with as many post production effects as he can.
Although titled as a remake of Greg Dark's 1985 film New Wave Hookers, Eon Mckai's Neu Wave Hookers serves as more of a conceptual homage to Darks Devil In Miss Jones 3/4 than the original Hookers. The basic premise of McKai's video is that a group of young women, self described sluts, discover a tape of the [edited version] of Dark's film at a garage sale. They go home to watch the tape (after also having to purchase a piano keys VCR to play it on) and then experience fantasies/reactions to what they are seeing.
Neu Wave Hookers is a virtual jumble of references to various Dark films and videos. In between the fantasy and viewing segments which make up the majority of this video, there are a series of strangely surreal and downright fascinating group of interview like segments in which various cast members from this production are interviewed about their own experiences in hustling which call to memory Dark's Fallen Angels. These scenes are accompanied by footage of a sleazy looking guy trying to get inside the various girls pants.
The above described segments are easily the most fascinating aspects of this movie and it is unfortunate that they are rarely longer then four minutes. The rest of the video is pretty fluffy.
McKai uses tons of visual after effects which give much of the movie a very gauzy look, something I quite liked, but as with ASS, there's little substance here. A main saving grace are the songs which McKai somehow got the rights to use. Although some of the bands and song choices weren't to my liking, the musical selections really do add some enjoyability to the proceedings.
Unfortunately, the video suffers from lengthy sex scenes, none of which are shot with any particular visual flare. Since sex is often the most tedious part of these movies and since McKai prides himself on employing artistic sensibility in his work, it would have been nice if the sex had been not only much, much shorter, but artier too.
Since this is a purely visual movie, there's no point in commenting on the bare minimum acting or the lack of narrative. And as much as I would have liked a bit more of both, the setpieces McKai employs are often pleasing and make up for the otherwise tedious nature of the production.
My only reason for the three star rating is the frequently strong sense of visuals employed during the non-sex portions. As a whole, Neu Wave Hookers is not a bad movie, it's just not a very good one either.

Extras
There's another party commentary which is kinda dumb. A bland and poorly shot making-of featurette, and some stills. Sadly, no soundtrack disc in included, but what is including (which is kinda impressive) is the original, but obviously cut, New Wave Hookers. Because Hookers is cut and the quality isn't perfect, nor is it a very good film in my opinion, it's inclusion here isn't all that interesting.

TA/V Quality
Here's where this release really shines. The presentation of McKai's video is awe striking. Everything about it looks perfect.

Cuts Warning
New Wave Hookers is obviously cut. McKai's video is not.

Overall
Another less than satisfying production from an outspoken "artist." Maybe there's still hope, probably not.
