Synopsis:
Kelly (Allysin Chaynes) is a freshman at college and since it is Rush Week, she is looking to go to all the frat parties. Amidst all the collegiate activities going on, she and her friend Holly (Gwen Summers) go to a party at the Omega house where they get busy with some frat boys.
Video/Audio:
The presentation of the film is in the 1.33:1 (full screen) aspect ratio and this appears to be the original aspect ratio of the film. The original movie was shot on video instead of film and the picture reflects it. There are some video problems with the filming however. The disk has good color levels and as good a clarity as possible considering the limitations of the source material.
The available language tracks are the original English track in 2.1 mono and a French dubbed track in 2.0 mono. On the English track, for the most part, spoken dialog is clear and above the music level. Occasionally the music level does rise above the dialog. The French track appears to be similar, but since I don't speak French, I only briefly checked out this track.
Special Features:
The meet the star's feature offers a couple pictures of the actresses available in the film, a video clip from this film featuring each featured actresses and a one sentence write-up about each of them. Nice presentation, but offers very little information. Only the women from the cast are featured here, a larger write- up offering some information, a filmography and all of the cast members being included would have been nice.
Behind the scenes is a short 11 minute featurette showing the filming of a few scenes from the movie. A nice addition to the disk, shows what goes on behind the scenes of a very low budget adult film.
Solo scenes offer five different masturbation scenes, one with each of the women in the film. The scenes are new and not just pulled from the film. There is no vocal audio to any of the scenes with a cheesy rock porn music background to all of the scenes.
Future DVD releases offer previews for Silk Stockings, Africa Rising, Chamber of Whores and Kelly the Coed 2.
There are seven chapter breaks listed on the DVD menu. The disk itself actually features 16 chapter breaks, making for easy navigation. The ones on the menu go to key scenes, whereas the chapters in the feature itself actually break up the various scenes.
The bonus movie offered is part of the film “I Love You, Suck My Dick” made in 1998 film starring Jasmin St. Claire, Crystal Dawn, Carolina, Natasha Rutska (under the name Natasha), Dave Hardman, Kyle Stone, Earl Slate and Brian Surewood. The portion of the film offered appears to be the first two scenes, of four, from the original 84 minute movie, running around 42 min. The two scenes offered feature Kyle Stone and Natasha Rutska and Crystal Dawn and Earl Slate. The set for both scenes is the same and there is no attempt at a plot in this film. Like the other bonus material, this feature has no chapter breaks or time coding. Although earlier features weren't hindered by this, since this feature is significantly longer, it would have been prudent to add at least chapter breaks at the scene changes. As someone who enjoys a little plot with their porn, I didn't find this feature too interesting, but someone who enjoys just straight sex will probably get more out of it.
All in all, a nice set of special features is present on this disk and although some of them could have been done better, it was nice that there was this volume of extras present.
Conclusion:
This is the first film in the seemingly never ending Kelly the Coed series (now numbering 11 films) which has also created a spin off series, Chrissy the Campus Slut. So the question is, is the movie really good enough to have made this many sequels? The answer is no. Cheap production values, constantly reused sets each time only slightly changed, poor acting ability and a laughably bad script harm what could have been a much better film. This is not to say that Kelly the Coed isn't entertaining, but it could have been much more so. Some good scenes are rushed, like early in the film when Kelly and her study buddy are playing strip quarters, some eroticism is lost from this scene as we are hurriedly rushed into the blow job portion instead of letting the scene build up.
The script is just simply awful, no attempt was made to make the dialog sound even remotely realistic, however, the basic story line isn't bad, it is enough to carry the film. Most of the cast proves they have no potential in starring in any film where acting ability is required. Proof of this requires the viewer to go no further than the opening scene where Mark Vega and J.J. Michaels are talking to Allysin Chaynes that comes off with Vega and Michaels looking like remedial acting students.
The cast for the most part is good looking with one exception which is Annabel Chong who's looks blow any chance of her scene being any good. Allysin Chaynes really appears to be having fun in this film which raises it above the level it would have normally fallen to. The rest of the cast is your average adult film fare.
The technical aspect of the film is low. In outdoor lighting scenes the sun location was never taken into account so when the camera pans back and forth people's faces darken. In some of the indoor scenes, not enough lighting was used. As mentioned earlier, the sets are reused with just a few prop changes, which pulls from the film. Often in college dormitories areas within one dorm look similar, but not that similar.
All in all, not a bad film, but a far cry from those that came out during the golden age of adult films. Worth a watch and/or picking up if the price is cheap enough. Enough variants in sexual acts should please all viewers as everyone should find something to their liking in the film.
