Review:
Though she may be "America's Sweetheart", there's much more to the fiery darling of the silver screen, Maitland Ward, than meets the eye...oh so much more! Indeed, what lies just a scratch beneath the squeaky clean surface is a complex woman, complete with kinks, strong sexual urges, and a uniquely-expressed love of red licorice. So goes Drift, a 2022 feature release from the auteure-supreme, Kayden Kross, and her Deeper brand that finds Ward embarking upon an erotic rampage through town and that ultimately leaves neither friend nor foe or co-star nor stranger safe from her diabolically deviant game.
Offered up at times with nostalgic themes and possessing a vintage vibe replete with allusions to her star's real-life past and career, Kross deftly weaves together a narrative tapestry that is both captivating and relevant. Moreover, in achieving the dark, neo-noir tones and ambience for which she strives, she employs intellectually-constructed voiceovers, a masterful control over the cinematographic art-form, and a variety of cut-scenes that are peppered throughout and that range from provocative to unnerving, black-and-white to color, and old to new. Further tying these thematic threads together is a soundtrack that vacillates between female punk (the opening) and grindhouse cinema...chiming in at exactly the appropriate moments in complementing the storyline and the often tumultuous (...albeit beautiful...) action onscreen. Indeed, this release leaves no doubt that Kayden Kross is a true master of her craft.
Of course, it doesn't hurt to have the impeccably talented (and stunning) Maitland Ward in the lead role, either. It goes without saying that Maitland is a spectacular actress with well-established mainstream roots, and she always delivers a command performance that goes above and beyond...time and time again. Her presence in the industry, particularly in combination with Kross, is the stuff of shattered glass ceilings, and her dramatic offerings in this particular flick once again demonstrate her supreme prowess in all things thespian and erotic. Kudos to her for slipping yet another impressive masterpiece under her already-esteemed garter belt.
