Initial Expectations: Very high. I've heard lots of very good things (and absolutely nothing even mediocre) about 'Double Feature!'. I also usually have high expectations for Wicked's DVDs, which has been well earned.
Initial Reaction: Must buy 'Bride of Double Feature!'. Must buy 'Bride of Double Feature!'. Must buy 'Bride of Double Feature!'. Must buy 'Bride of Double Feature!'. Must buy 'Bride of Double Feature!'.
Audio /Video Quality: Excellent. The movie is in widescreen black and white with the sex is in full screen color. There's grain in the picture in some spots, but it adds to the feel of the movie.
Music: Excellent. It fits the scenes well and is very well balanced with the scenes.
The Feature: 'Double Feature!' is the most fun that I've had watching any movie, either mainstream or adult, in a very long time. From the moment usher Anthony Crane rushes you into the theater until the end of the bloopers I was laughing so hard that it was almost impossible to stay in my chair. The humor even continued through the sex scenes. It's like watching 'Airplane!' or 'The Naked Gun' movies with really great sex!
As soon as we enter the theater, we get one of the most anticipated or hated parts of any movie: the previews. All of the previews are for movies starring Suzie Cheesecake (Serenity) and Rip Rockwell (Randy Spears), yesteryear's finest actor and actress (and apparently the busiest also, as they're the stars of today's features also). First, we have a trailer for 'Gangbang Zombies', a horror movie. Next there's 'Death Rides a Rubber Horse', a detective movie where somebody's murdering blow-up dolls. Finally, there's 'Attack of the Twelve-Story Dildos', a science fiction movie. At this point, Mrs. Astro had to strap me into my chair so I wouldn't fall on the dog.
Finally, we get to the main feature, and thankfully the main features are every bit as good as the trailers. The first main feature, 'Attack of the Bimbos From Outer Space' is a parody of the 1950s style outer space movies. It even uses many scenes from 'Earth vs. the Flying Saucers'. I never thought I'd live long enough to see a porno with Ray Harryhausen special effects. It's like a dream come true. Ray Harryhausen effects combined with great sex and story. The porno gods will be very pleased. The aliens (Shanna McCullough and Kary Evers) are led by Commander Clitora from Uranus (Jewel De'Nyle). They land their UFO (complete with "Made In Japan" painted on the side) just outside of a town just a little further down the genetic pool from Mayberry. Shanna and Kary put two of the local hicks (Mickey G. and Ian Daniels) under their control, and gradually move outward.
Finally, we meet our heroes, Trent Nerdski (Randy / Rip) and Judy Luvjoy (Suzie / Serenity). Trent and Judy are having an affair, since Judy's husband is too busy with his government contracts to pay her the attention she needs and deserves. Judy and Trent barely have time to satisfy their urges before Clitora announces to the world that they are going to take us over and that we can't resist them and their sexuality. After seeing the aliens, the main question would be why we would want to resist. After seeing the now sex slave Mickey G., I can understand why we'd resist. He's already turned into a drooling vegetable.
General Slowmo isn't going to take this lying down. After finishing an office war maneuver that's second only to John Laroquette in 'Stripes', he sends a crack three man commando squad to take down the aliens. Unfortunately, they're no match for Shanna and Kary. He barely even has time to react before Clitora and her girls appear at his office door. Slowmo tries his best, but he's no match for Clitora.
Under Clitora's spell, Slowmo has no choice but to give up the research being done at Trent and Judy's lab. Trent's boss, the lead scientist, is unable to resist Clitora's sexuality. Trent, being the hero, won't let the secret weapon fall into the aliens hands and does his best to do all he can to take down all the aliens at one time. There's no divide and conquer here. It's Trent versus all three aliens. Thankfully, this means we get to see all three aliens in one more scene. It's a great group scene with a great ending. It's a scene that makes you proud to be an American.
For the second feature, 'The Man Made Beast', I have a special treat for all of you out there, which I think is a first for any Adult DVD Talk review. I happened to run into the monster while taking a break from writing this review, and the monster has agreed to answer a few short questions regarding the feature.
astro: Mr. Monster, how would you describe the story of 'The Man Made Beast'?
Monster: Aaarh!
astro: Amazing! And the acting, what do you think of the overall quality of acting in the movie?
Monster: Aaarh!
astro: That's exactly what I thought. Most importantly, and I know this is very important to all our readers out there, how would you rate the sex in 'Double Feature'?
Monster: Aaarh! (makes "boink, boink" motion with his crotch) Aaarh!
astro: I couldn't have put it better myself. Thank you Mr. Monster. It was a treat talking with you. I have to go now, so please stop humping my leg.
Now that the Monster has given a little background on his perspective on 'The Man Made Monster', I'll expand a little. Serenity plays Dr. Shelley, a mad scientist who can't find a man who can satisfy her. She finished off her Latin lover, Mickey G, and afterwards chews him out because he came before she did. Being a mad scientist, Dr. Shelley of course has an assistant. Igor was busy with another mad scientist, so Dr. Shelly has Tabitha (Sana Fey). From the hump on her back, I'm assuming that Tabitha is Igor's cousin or maybe sister. With the hump in her back she may very well be both.
Tabitha suggests that maybe Dr. Shelley's problem is with men and that she should look to the fairer sex. Dr. Shelley has tried this and tells her of her experience with Stephanie Swift. It's a really nice girl / girl scene without toys. I won't ruin why it didn't work out, but it's done very well and it continues throughout the movie.
Seeing no other choice, Dr. Shelley creates a monster that she thinks will be able to satisfy her. She only needs one more piece to complete the puzzle, and so she sends Tabitha after a penis. Tabitha returns with one from a guy named Abby. No, she didn't go to San Francisco. Tabitha chose the penis named Abby Normal. When Dr. Shelley runs off to get her camera so she can get a picture of her masterpiece (or is that Master Piece?) Tabitha moves her hump to the front (which is almost as grotesque) and takes the monster (Randy Spears) for a test ride. Randy is amazing as the monster. He's decked out in a powder blue tuxedo with black boots (because a monster has to have the boots).
After finishing Tabitha, the monster escapes and wanders the countryside. He stumbles across Ursula, a charming farm girl who's father (Anthony Crane) has just warned her about boys and has run off to town to get condoms for her. Being a simple farm girl, Ursula can't resist the monster's charms. Then again, it's hard to find a woman who can resist pick-up lines like "Aaaargh!" and boinking motions with the crotch. Ursula doesn't have any actual dialogue lines, but she more than makes up for it by being able to appear extremely innocent. She also has a slight gap between her teeth that combined with pigtails really make her appear like an innocent country bumpkin. Even when she's getting pile- drivered anally, she has a certain amount of innocence to her.
Unfortunately, Daddy brings the condoms just after the monster finished off his little girl, and so begins the mandatory 'chase the monster' scene (which we all know is a must in any monster movie). The monster goes to Dr. Shelley for help, but the villagers take him any way and ties him to a stake to be burned. Here's where I get confused. One of the villagers (played by Danielle Rodgers who is dressed exactly like Serenity in the opening Mickey G. scene) thinks that the monster may be able to satisfy her. We just saw Dr. Shelley dressed differently just before this, so I'm not sure if this is to be Dr. Shelley or if Serenity wasn't supposed to be Dr. Shelley in the original scene. As much as I want to, I can't give away this ending, besides saying that it's a storybook ending that's followed by bloopers.
Amazingly, the guys seemed to be the real stars here. Don't get me wrong, Serenity, Jewel, and the other girls did great jobs in 'Double Feature!', but Randy Spears and Anthony Crane stole the movie. Randy plays the male lead in both features and does a great job. He makes a great transition from complete nerd to superman in 'Attack of the Bimbos From Outer Space' and is a riot in 'The Man Made Beast'. In the latter, he never mentions a word other than 'Aaarh'. He's hilarious!
Anthony Crane is just as good, but he never gets in on the action. I don't know if I have enough fingers to count how many roles Anthony played in 'Double Feature!'. I think he plays at least four or five characters in each movie in addition to being the usher. He brought a smile to my face every time he came onscreen as you never knew what he was going to do next.
To be fair, I should give credit to Serenity and Jewel, as the guys couldn't have done it alone. Serenity's enthusiasm raised the quality of the sex scenes up to a level where it matched the humor. She's also a flexible thing. In the opening scene of 'The Man Made Beast' I was half expecting her to pull her leg behind her head while standing on the other with Mickey G. pounding away on her pussy. She put that kind of dedication, effort, and just plain sexuality into every one of her scenes.
Jewel was every bit as good as Serenity, but she was only in 'The Attack of the Bimbos From Outer Space'. As Commander Clitora, she put forward enough attitude that every man would want to fuck her but not with her. Her alien trash talk was also one of the highlights of the movie with lines like "Fuck my intergalactic pussy!". I was really disappointed that she wasn't in the second half after the job she did in the first.
Unfortunately, there were a few problems with 'Double Feature!'. First, Herschel had a nice magic trick with his shirt while Jewel was going down on him. It magically disappeared and reappeared for a couple minutes. Once wouldn't have been bad, but it was enough that I kept noticing it. There's also a similar moment later in the movie. The big complaint for me, though, was the final scene when the monster is tied to the stake and Danielle Rodgers appears as Dr. Shelley. It wasn't much of an appearance for Danielle (although I would have liked to see her in a sex role rather than a non-sex role), but it could have been very easily clarified with about two lines of dialogue. Although these few imperfections made me give 'Double Feature!' less than the perfect rating, don't let these few imperfections stop you from picking up 'Double Feature!'!
Themes: Farce, straight, lesbian, group, anal, and intergalactic pussy
Raincoat Factor: Medium. If you're looking for a spank-a-thon, the sex is great, but the humor may get in the way since it continues through the scenes.
Extras: Commentary by Serenity and Jonathan Morgan, photo gallery, audio biography of the stars, trailers, and highlights from the AVN 2000 awards show. Photo gallery and biographies are about what you normally expect. The main thing that stood out on the bios was that they went through the main men also. The commentary is also very good and as almost always in adult films, worth listening to. Jonathan and Serenity work very well together and give some nice background information, while also mocking the movie and each other. Jonathan also comments on some of the editing of the movie (such as Herschels' magic shirt), which shows some nice care about his movie that he doesn't ignore the warts in it (thankfully none of the warts are in bad places).
Overall: Although it has a few imperfections, pick up 'Double Feature!. While you're at it, you'll probably want to pick up 'Bride of Double Feature!' too (although I haven't seen it...yet). This is the funniest porno I have ever seen, while keeping the sex top notch at the same time. Stop wasting your time reading this and go pick 'Double Feature!' up! You can find it at most e-tailers for between $27 and $30 and it's well worth the money.
