Running Time: 45 min.
Production Date: 2001
Director: Ddangerfield
Cast: Animated
Initial Expectations: Very high after reading Steph’s review.
Initial Reaction: It’s freaking hilarious!
Who Should Watch It : Anybody looking for a good adult laugh
Who Should Avoid It: Anybody looking for whacking material
Audio /Video Quality: The audio is very clear and well balanced. As an animated feature, I’d be really worried if it wasn’t. The video is also very clear, but done in the cheaper Japanese style that’s a little below Macross.
Music: The music is a techno style and just slightly loud, although not loud enough to really interfere with anything.
Menus: The only menu is a two screen chapter menu.
The Feature: From the opening moment Beavis and Butthead comments, to the final credits, Star Ballz tries to see how much is can make fun of while fitting it all into a Star Wars parody. The characters all come from today’s pop entertainment and anime. Luke Skywalker isn’t here, but Wank Solo is directly out of Dragonball Z, his sidekick Chewhowie, is a Wookie version of Howard Stern, and R2D2 is now Pifuckyu, a cross between the Droid and Pikachu. The Princess is also out of anime and very familiar, but I’m not exactly sure where she comes from. Unlike the good guys, the bad guys are parodies of themselves. Vader, here known as Lord Limpbiscuit wears Mickey Mouse ears, while Darth Maul has nipples all over his head. The storm troopers are now sperm troopers complete with dick heads and cum guns. Even the space ships are twisted in adult ways, which I’m not going to explain as it would ruin some of the humor. If the Star Wars plot isn’t enough, there are plenty of scenes stolen and fit in from other movies such as Basic Instinct, Silence of the Lambs, and The Abyss while also stealing lines from Die Hard and giving you what you really wanted to see in Titanic. It’s amazing that the writers can fit everything together into a coherent plot, let alone one that’s as funny as this.
The biggest drawback to Star Ballz is that sometimes the jokes feel like they come too fast. Heck, this might even make Jim Carrey’s head spin with pop culture references. I almost started watching it again as soon as I finished watching it the first time because I felt that I probably missed quite a few gags (which in this case refers to jokes, unlike normal adult entertainment). This is kind of a blessing and a curse. It might take a few viewings to catch all the jokes, but at the same time it’s a lot of fun to see what you can pick out each time.
Star Ballz is one of the rare parodies that skewers everything in sight while not getting aggravating. Rather than getting bored or annoyed with it, I kept waiting to see who or what they were going to rip off next while at the same time wiping away the tears in my eyes so that I could hopefully see it. Although there are sexual references throughout the feature, there’s only one or two actual scenes, and even those are played for laughs. If you want a good hard laugh, you need to watch Star Ballz.
Extras: None, which is really too bad since there are some good things that could have been done here.
Themes: Anime, straight, anal, tit- fuck, and masturbation
Raincoat Factor: Low
Overall: Currently, Star Ballz isn’t in the price search, but should be rented, if not bought as soon as it is. It isn’t strong on actual sex scenes, but there are sex references and mini-scenes throughout the entire feature. The audio and video are both very good, but unfortunately there aren’t any extras.
Note to MMG: It’s great to see you releasing features like Star Ballz on DVD, but in the future please consider adding a few extras. A behind the scenes featurette on the animation, commentary, or interview with the creators would have been great on this DVD.
