Review:
The particular value of Vinegar Syndrome's re-master and reissue of The Oral Generation is primarily a historical one. Indeed, this film provides a fairly unique window back to the past and the early days of the industry's inception. Presented as a documentary--which was typical for such early releases due to obscenity standards of the era--this production offers up a mix of educational material and commentary. The principal focus is upon oral sex--still something of a taboo in 1970--and its value to couples, particularly women. (There is a bit of vaginal, as well.) Included along the way are references to the seminal work of Masters and Johnson, the then-applicable sodomy laws, the to-date growth of the adult film industry, prevalent attitudes of the times, and so on. Also of interest are some of the clips of adult-related establishments in Times Square and the broader Manhattan area, as well.
Interspersed throughout are scenes typically involving oral sex, which by modern standards are tame...at best. It should be noted, however, that the early-adult legend, Tina Russell (RIP), plays a prominent role. While her sequences are similar to the others in content, her innate sensuality does shine through, and her beauty is both undeniable and crisply and vibrantly captured. (Thanks to Vinegar's restoration magic for that one!)
In all, this release isn't going to be for everyone, particularly those interested in sexual content. That said, it may hold some value for those looking for a firsthand snapshot in time as to how things were about 50 years ago. Further, it may be of interest to fans of Tina Russell, if for no other reason than it presents some of the clearest visuals available of her stunning, early self.
