The First Word: Very adult content combined with traditional Japanese animation techniques makes for an interesting but not very stimulating change of pace from "real porn." What's It About?: La Blue Girl is a Japanese adult animated series chronicling the sexual adventures of a junior college schoolgirl, Miko Mido and her ninja sidekick Nin-Nin. In addition to being a schoolgirl, Miko happens to be a member of the Miroku ninja clan, half-demon, and the daughter of the "Shikima King." This DVD contains two episodes, "Shikima Death World" and "The Perverted World Of The Haunted Sword" (gotta love those English translations). The animation is done in Japanimation, or anime, style, with English dubbing. The episodes start with a quick recap of past adventures and an introduction to Miko and Nin-Nin for new viewers. "Shikima Death World" is the story of how Miko stumbles upon the secret village of her clan of ninja women, discovering that a banished "sex craft" instructor, Kamiri, has stolen the prized village sword called Zipang and massacred the women. It should be pointed out that the clanswomen "fight" monsters and demons using their sexual talents. Getting them to spend themselves apparently causes them to lose their powers. So Kamiri was a sex craft instructor teaching the women how to masturbate and use their bodies to fight evil. One day, the village was attacked by a spy named Kugutsumen from a rival clan. He and Kamiri "fought" by engaging in aerial sex, and she defeated him when she made him cum. But it seems that his sperm was able to gain control over her, and when the two were found to be in conspiracy against the Miroku clan, the Elders maimed her vagina with a wicked, thorny dildo and banished her. So Kamiri takes her revenge by slaughtering the members of her former clan, while Kugutsumen abducts local schoolgirls to feed his power. One of Miko's fellow clansmembers, Yaku, has a peculiar trait of turning into a monster in the full moon unless she has an orgasm, something she achieves by getting Miko to lend a hand (lesbo action in a cartoon -- I never thought I'd see the day!). Kugutsumen ends up kidnapping Yaku, taking her to a nearby monster-infested location. When Miko tries to find her, she too is captured. The monster sex begins in earnest (this is a common theme in adult anime) when a monster rapes Yaku. Once the monster is finished, Kugutsumen takes control of the monster and then begins to rape Miko. Apparently, if you have an orgasm when having sex with a monster, you will be absorbed into it and your knowledge becomes a part of the monster's. So Miko has to resist the pleasure from being screwed by multiple tentacles in order not to give away the location of the Shikima World, the source of her clan's power. Fortunately, Miko's voyeuristic sidekick Nin-Nin saves the day in the nick of time and prevents the monster from absorbing Miko. And that's the end of Episode 3. Confused? Don't worry, it doesn't make sense. Maybe it's a cultural thing or maybe something is lost in the translation. In either case, if you're scratching your head after the first episode, I don't blame you. The next episode, "The Perverted World of the Haunted Sword" offers more of the same supernatural sex. This fourth episode of the La Blue Girl series starts with Kamiri, masturbating to the power of Zipang, the stolen Miroku clan sword. Meanwhile, two city boys who look like they stepped off the set of a certain 80's police show set in Florida try to hit on Miko and Yaku. They even have appropriate names: Hammer and Cool J. So the girls decide to take them up on their offer for something to eat by going to a restaurant and getting so much food that the boys are left yen-less. Disheartened, the guys leave. The girls then go on to an inn for the night. Unbeknownst to them, the evil Kugutsumen assumes the identity of the innkeeper, and then he drugs the girls. He finger fucks Yaku in an attempt to kill her by making her heart explode from her orgasm. But since Yaku turns into a monster and fights him off. Our city boy, Hammer, happens to be the grandson of the innkeeper, and witnesses the battle, which causes him to faint. The danger passed, Yaku decides to be nice to Hammer and give him head before fucking him. Miko doesn't make the scene a three-way; instead she just plays with herself. Meanwhile, Nin-Nin has caught up to the sword-masturbating Kamiri and is spying on her when he's discovered by Kugustumen. This "man of a thousand faces" assumes the identity of Nin-Nin, and fools Miko into using an "air dildo" (using a shaft of air as a sex aid). Using the air dildo, he shoots a control device into her pussy and orders her to kill Yaku. But Yaku sees through this scheme. The episode ends with the Zipang sword coming alive as a demon, who explains that it was created from the sexual energy of the ninjas. Of course, Miko saves the day by defeating the sword-demon. Whew! What I liked: Interesting change of pace: I've never really seen the appeal of "dirty cartoons," and while this DVD hasn't changed my mind, it was a good change from what I normally watch. I'm not a big fan of anime, but I don't dislike it, so I was entertained by the story and style of animation even though I found the sex to be either boring or slightly repulsive (I wouldn't like to watch a real woman get ripped open by a thorn covered dildo!). What I didn't like: Anime is not erotic: While it may be interesting as a guilty pleasure to watch, I don't find adult Japanimation titillating at all. The animation is so over the top and stylized that it can't be meant to be erotic. Watching a demon implanting his cartoon seed by way of multiple tentacles just doesn't do a thing for me. I think some kid would find this stuff to be exciting (and I absolutely don't think this should be watched by minors), but as an adult who is used to seeing real people have real sex, it's pretty boring and pointless. I know there's an appeal for dirty cartoons -- who hasn't seen an explicit parody of a popular cartoon character and chuckled? Yet I don't see anyone sitting down and getting aroused by some animated Saturday morning 'toon characters getting it on. No realistic animation here: La Blue Girl more closely resembles a Saturday morning cartoon than some of the more recent realistic works from Japan, such as Princess Mononoke, Ghost in the Shell, or Spirited Away. Aside from the whole monster/demon sex theme, you're going to find very loose interpretations of what sex looks like and very, well, cartoonish, views of what people look like. Again, it goes back to the bottom line that this genre is more a curiosity than a turn-on. DVD Extras: There are eight trailers for other anime releases included on the disc, as well as a short, yet informative tutorial on the art of Japanimation. The tutorial talks about why the eyes and hair of anime girls are so Western and distinctive, as well as why they wear schoolgirl uniforms. The information could just as well have been included on mainstream, non-adult anime videos, and for all I know, maybe it is included. I'm not a fan of watching foreign films with English dubbing primarily because of the poor voice talent, and this is no exception. But since the translations in the subtitle track matches the English dub closely and because this is an animated feature not live action, it's tolerable to watch the English version. A/V Quality: I would consider the audio and video to be comparable to an animated TV series. Although the subject matter is for mature audiences, I'm sure the animators and producers are also involved in making anime for general audiences, so I'm not surprised about the similarities, right down to the length (about 45 minutes, the right length to fit into a pay cable timeslot or allow for commercials. Bottom line is that it looks like it was produced with television in mind, and the quality matches that aim. The Last Word: There's not really any compelling reason to watch this DVD again after you've seen it once. It's not like the animation, story, or sexual content is captivating or even all that interesting. Hypothetically, if this show were to be on TV, I would probably watch it all the way through and might even watch future episodes. But I would not go out of my way to watch it regularly. It's interesting to see sex portrayed through artwork, and I guess some might be interested in seeing some taboo acts (such as violent rape, pseudo-bestiality, etc.) albeit in animated form. Personally, it didn't do anything to excite me, and I worry about some kid getting a hold of this despite the disclaimers of "absolutely not for children." Considering it's a budget-priced DVD, I suppose it's worth a look if you're at all curious or enjoy the art of Japanimation.
