Fresh Meat 17: “City Morgue”…and other points of interest

Initial expectations: John Leslie is one of my favorite all-time directors. His command of the camera, his storytelling, and his use of editing, all mixed in with an exceptional sense of timing, accentuate the sex, and in my opinion, good sex is the heart and soul of good porn. I admit not caring as much for his later works, but I thought “Fresh Meat 16” was vintage Leslie—raw, edgy, and nasty—so I have been wanting to give his newer stuff another try. Also, I am in lust with Michelle Wild, and after seeing her on the cover seductively undressing her perfect pair of breasts, I decided to rent this DVD.

My Overall Impression of the Feature: Thematically, his vignettes, as usual, are much more provoking than what’s typical. Unfortunately, Leslie doesn’t employ, as he usually does in his best work, his masterful technique often enough to help with the change-up in the tempo of the scenes, and consequently, the sex fizzles. It didn’t help that there were only four scenes in over two hours of footage.

Aside from her dramatic display of horror and dread in the first scene, I was also let down by Michelle Wild’s performance. I’m beginning to feel that she is the type of actor that looks absolutely amazing in photo sets, but doesn’t consistently cut the mustard when it comes to performing hot, scalding sex on video. (God, it sounds so sacrilegious for me to say something like that! I still lust for you, Michelle.)

What I Did Like: The first scene in the morgue simply underscores the “evil” aspect of Evil Angel: It’s deliciously wicked. Watching Michelle Wild and David Perry sodomize what I thought to be the corpse of Sandy Style was an act of perversion I honestly won’t forget. I also loved hearing English siren Angel Long’s filthy discourse throughout the fourth scene. And, as usual in a Leslie flick, the women are quite beautiful and, when dressed up, are dressed to kill.

Of course, Leslie’s camerawork is second to none. I especially love how Leslie takes those steeply-angled shots from so low to the ground.

Technical Aspects: The audio and video quality is second to none. As usual, Evil Angel tops all the rest through the careful and thoughtful authoring of the disc by DVDemon.

Aside from the ability to play the feature in its entirety, the DVD main menu contains chapter, fetish, and special feature submenus. The sweet music in the main menu sets up a darkly humorous contrast to the city morgue theme.
