The Technical Stuff

Audio /Video Quality: The technical aspects are basically flawless. The audio is extremely clear and has a fantastic balance. The video is utterly amazing. It’s very clear and very nicely lit. There’s a few shadows, but they always feel like they belong in the movie. The comic book animation is very nicely mixed in with the movie, and I absolutely love how they occasionally used smaller frames in the movie to capture two different angles of the action.

Music: The music is nothing short of fantastic. It’s very well balanced throughout the movie, and every scene has its own style that fits it perfectly. It definitely helps out the movie, and is good enough that I wish it would have been included as a separate CD or given its own audio track.

Menus: The main menu is very nicely done, and works in a comic book opening similar to what’s been used in many of the recent big screen comic adaptations, but tapping more than a little of the EC style. As usual, the chapter menu also shows a lot of care. It deviates from the usual Evil Angel style of a clip of the scene and the name of the girls in each scene, and instead gives you a clip of the comic for each segment and breaks it down to several text sections. Normally I’d complain about the simplicity of it, but it works with the style of the movie here.

The Feature

Odds are if you went into an adult store or the back room at some other stores, you saw it there on the newsstand. Buttman Magazine. Here and there through the magazine were Buttman Comics, which sprung off on their own a few times into their own releases. Here they spring into the small screen, where several Buttman Comics become vignettes after Buttman Comics model BellaDonna gets recognized after riding into the Sundowner Biker Bar.

Scene 1 - Haley Paige, Jayna Oso, and Evan Stone

When she takes the garbage out, waitress Haley takes the time for a smoke and to show off her ass as well. This is a great scene to start the sex with.

Scene 2 - Alicia Rhodes, Mason Storm, Shayna Knight, and Claudio Meloni

There’s a very nice fetish aspect to the scene with the latex and speculums, and the split frames work very well to capture the action in both couples when they split up while also enhancing the comic book feel. This is a great scene, both sexually and artistically.

Scene 3 - Taylor Rain, Steve Hatcher, and Tommy Gunn

On the positive side of things, I love how the scene is shot around the bike and bar. It looks to be one heck of a sweet ride, and it’s damn cool that the Sundowners let Evil Angel use their bar as the main location in the movie. In the end, I guess I’d rather ride the bike than Taylor.

Scene 4 - Roxy Jezel, Tiffany Mynx, and Brandon Iron

Perhaps the main thing that stood out to me for the western style though is the katydids in the background. They were just the icing on the cake, and helped to make this what just might be my favorite scene in the movie.

Scene 5 - Belladonna, Steve Hatcher, and Travis Knight

Finally, Bella slaps the funny book shut so she can get some loving from bartender Steve and tough guy Travis. Buttman Comics Presents: Tales From the Crack is nothing short of amazing. Yes, it goes with the usually simple vignette feel, but even that seems perfect for the movie. Bella, Steve, Travis, and the others in the bar do a great job providing a framework for the movie, and having them get it on at the end seems just right as well. The individual scenes, however, are what’s really impressive. Every scene has its own style while still keeping the comic book feel. They each have their own music, background noises, overall feel, and yes, even sexual feel. Some scenes are dark, some are funny, and some are just down and out sexy. I think the cowgirls were my favorite here, although there’s nothing wrong with any scene here. The camera work is great, the sex is hot, and there’s plenty of the tease you come to expect when seeing that Buttman’s involved with a movie. Buttman Comics Presents: Tales From the Crack is an excellent fuck flick in pretty much any respect you can think of.

The Extra Stuff

There are a few extras included on the first DVD. A cast listing by scene is included as well as filmographies for Belladonna, Taylor Rain, Tiffany Mynx, Haley Paige, Roxy Jezel, Shayna Knight, Alicia Rhodes, Jayna Oso, and the always alluring, Tricia Devereaux. Bios are included for Evil Angel, with John Stagliano talking about how and why he set up the Evil Empire as he did, Buttman Magazine, as well as an autobiography of John Stagliano. There’s also website information, a listing of what can be found on the second DVD, and an audio commentary.

Tricia Deveraux and David “Crawdaddy” Crawfoed join Tiffany Mynx and BellaDonna for a commentary track. They talk about most everything that comes to mind, from sex in the movie to sex off-screen. There’s plenty of talk about the performers and things such as the toys and locations used in the movie. There’s even talk about things such as stripping and outfits that you normally don’t get in commentaries. Tricia and David easily lead the commentary, with Bella adding in fairly often and Tiffany remaining fairly quiet because she’s too into the movie. There’s a lot of joking around and laughing through the commentary, and it helps make the commentary both fun and informative. The biggest problem with the commentary track is that it’s at a much lower level than the movie. That’s fine if you want to just listen to the commentary watching the movie, but if you want to flip back and forth to hear the group’s thoughts on specific parts of the movie, it’s a minor annoyance.

The second DVD is completely devoted to extras. There’s featureless on both the pre-production and the making on the movie, as well as a director’s interview and bloopers. There’s extra footage with an extended Taylor Rain tease and a fetish menu that lets you go directly to sex acts such as teases, ass play, and cumswapping, just to name a few. There’s also photo galleries, a commercial, a listing of everything you can find on the first DVD, and Easter Eggs.

The Pre-production featurette lasts about fifty minutes. You get to see the first meeting, the production meeting, a little of the props and wardrobe, location scouting, and casting. Scott Phillips and John Howard, the artist and filmmaker, talk about some of their past projects on their way to meet with John Stagliano. After meeting John and some of the others at EA, they discuss some of the stuff in the comics as well as watching a little of their work. Afterwards they discuss what segments they want to do, how to work it together, and John gives them a little advice on the best way to make the movie. The production meeting brings Scott and John back to meet with John and some of the others at EA after writing most of the script as they put the final touches on. They discuss what might work and what might, as well as how to tweak what’s there into something better. Scott and John go shopping for the first part of the Props & Wardrobe section, and then check out some of the cast when they suit up in various costumes and outfits for the movie. There’s a bit of fun with Bella and Tyler Knight as well as trying on outfits for Taylor Rain. Just as one would expect, Scott and John check out locations for the scenes in the Locations segment, going from the biker bar to the ranch with an evil cow to the studio for the other scenes. Finally, casting features girls showing what they offer, both physically and in acting skills. There’s also plenty of girls you just see introduce themselves, as well as many others who get questioned about their experience with horses and motorcycles. Finally, a few of them pose for photos. Before you get to see who got what role and they send the girls off. This is a very nice feature which features some very nice camera work by Tricia Devereaux and Crawdaddy. It seems to cover most everything concerning setting up the movie, and does it with some nice and manageable segments. The biggest problem with the featurette is the audio. The music comes out of the right speaker only while the rest of the audio comes out the left side. Even with that, this is still a great featurette that adds a lot to the release.

The Making of Tales From the Crack lasts about forty three minutes (although the cover states fifty). Directors Scott and John introduce each scene, including which scene it is and who the talent in the scene is. Things start out with the naughty nurses, and even include Scott and John showing the girls some of the comic to show what they’re going for. There’s plenty of the scene being shot, as well as a lot of footage from the action scene. The vampire scene is next, and starts out with the girls and Evan talking about their role in the movie. It even includes those magical words, “Hi, I’m Evan Stone”, which you know almost always leads to plenty of humor. The cowgirls are next, with some nice emphasis put on the girls posing for their stills before focusing on the shooting of the scene. The SunDowners Biker Bar scenes are next, with a quick word from the Drunken Dickhead in the bar to start things out, where you learn has never touched alcohol in his life. BellaDonna’s scene is the fourth day in the shoot, with Taylor’s scene finishing things up on the fifth and last day of the shoot. This is a pretty average behind the scenes featurette. As always, Evan Stone is the highlight of the featurette, and adds more than a little humor and personality. You do get to see a bit of the scenes being shot, but it’s very heavy on the footage from the movie while also including a lot more the actual scenes being shot than I normally care for. Thankfully the audio is better than in the pre-production featurette, but it‘s still a little weak. This is an okay behind the scenes featurette.

The director’s interview lasts about two minutes. They chat with Scott at the end of the movie about the making of the movie and how it compared to what they thought and differences in shooting this movie. He also talks about his favorite scene and probably needing a little more time before tackling another project like this. It’s a short interview, but a great extra since neither of the directors were able to make it for the commentary.

The blooper reel lasts about seven and a half minutes. There’s plenty of flubbed lines as well as a little fun on the set. There’s even some sexual bloopers as Taylor waits for one of her pops. It’s a nice little featurette that includes a little from each scene.

The extended tease with Taylor Rain lasts about two minutes. Yes, this is a longer version of the opening to Taylor’s biker slut scene in the movie. Although I’m not much of a fan of Taylor, she does do a nice job in the tease here, and I can see a lot of her fans being very happy with this extra.

Several photo galleries are also included. There are galleries for Star Pixxx, Production, Behind the Scenes, Casting, and Artwork from The Crack. The Star Pixxx are broken down by the star, and included for nine of the girls with each gallery lasting between a minute and a half and two minutes. The production gallery lasts over eight minutes while the behind the scenes gallery lasts over sixteen minutes. The casting gallery lasts about seven minutes and the artwork from The Crack lasts about four and a half minutes. In each case, you get about seven seconds per very nice looking snapshot.

The Bottom Line:

Currently, most of Evil Angel’s DVDs can be found online for between about $18 and $30, with a few stores offering them in the $20 range. The price on this one shouldn’t even matter. This is an all around great DVD, with tremendous effort put into the sex as well as everything else in the movie. The technical aspects are about as close to perfect as I’ve seen in the movie, and the extras show some very nice effort as well even if the audio is a little weak. This is a great double DVD release.

Note to John Stagliano / Evil Angel: Thanks for trying something a little different with this one! In the future, it might be cool to include a mini-Buttman Comics comic book with the DVDs. Also, an interview with John Stagliano might be nice where he can talk about what he really liked about the movie and why he chose the people he did to direct it.
