menu Synopsis:
The shenanigans in an L.A. hospital are exposed as the candy stripers provide bedside assistance to the patients and the staff.

Candy Stripers is presented in the full screen aspect ratio, 1.33:1, which I don’t believe is the original aspect ratio for the film.  However, there is no evidence of cropping either so if it isn’t in the proper aspect ratio, the viewer isn’t aware of it.  Candy Stripers was originally filmed on 35 mm.  For this presentation of the film the print has been restored by Arrow and the film has never looked better.  The picture quality is far better than that of previous VHS releases and according to Bob Chinn in the interview, the color quality of this print is better than the original release prints.  There are some occasional portions that you can tell there were problems restoring because the colors become slightly over saturated.  Other than this issue, the color levels are perfect.  There are also very occasional artifacts on the print.  Other than that, this print is absolutely beautiful.  If only all adult companies put this much work into restoring their classic releases.

screen shot The available audio track is an English 2.0 Mono track, which is in excellent shape.  The audio is in far better shape than I expected it to be in with no pops or hisses that are all too common in the classic releases present here.  The dialog is clear and easy to hear throughout the film.  No other language tracks and no subtitle options are available.

Cut Warning:
For the sake of accuracy I am listing these cuts even though the cut footage is on the disc as an easter egg, since the footage is still cut from the feature film.  The two fisting scenes from the film have been cut from this print, as they have been from most, if not all, of the home video releases in the past, bringing the original run time of the film of 81 minutes down to 73 minutes.  The cuts have been done well and if you haven’t seen the original, or the easter egg to see where they fit, you wouldn’t know that the cuts had been made.

screen shot Chapters/Time Code:
There are six chapters available from the main menu for Candy Stripers.  They are identified by a video clip from the scene that they go to.  There is no time code for the feature film, so time searching isn’t available.  Given the style of the film and the fact that the disc doesn’t have a time code, these chapters don’t allow for easy navigation on the disc.

Special Features:
This disc is rather bare as far as the extras are concerned however the quality of the ones on the disc is far greater than most adult discs.  There is the director’s interview with Bob Chinn, which lasts for 18 minutes, where he goes into detail on the golden age of adult films, how he got involved in the adult industry and Candy Stripers itself.  There is an advert for Arrow’s internet presence falsely under the title trailers.  And there is an easter egg hidden on the disc that contains the single and double fisting scenes long cut from the film.  This footage has not been restored however and is grainy with plenty of artifacts present.

screen shot Review:
Bob Chinn’s Candy Stripers is considered on of the true golden age classics and, when watching it, it’s easy to see why.  This film is an example of how great classic porn can be.  To begin with, the sets are incredible.  Although the film is often believed to have been filmed in a hospital, it was actually filmed on a sound stage.  This is how good the sets are.  I hate to rant like this, but so often in the adult world, poor substitutes for real sets are used that can ruin the mood created in a scene and it’s refreshing to see a film where this isn’t the case.

The cast is excellent, especially for the seventies.  The female cast is all attractive, if not down right hot.  And unlike the porn stars of today, they don’t look like porn stars, which makes the film all that hotter.  The sex is great and there is plenty of variety in the scenes to keep the viewer interested throughout the film.  There are several short tease scenes in the film to keep the screen shot viewer aroused between the main sex scenes.  As is the case with most, if not all, the classics, the women are hairy which may bother some viewers who are used to the neatly trimmed women of the porn of today.  The sexual themes in the film are oral, vaginal and anal sex with lesbianism, anilingus, fruit and an orgy.

The film is beautifully captured on film and thanks to this remastered print, the original beauty of the film shows through and is not marred by tons of artifacts, glitches and other technical problems.  This film shows why Bob Chinn is considered one of the great classic directors.  Although I recommend this film to viewers who like porn with a plot, there isn’t much of a plot to the film at all.  Basically it centers around the last day of one of the candy stripers.  However, there are enough non-sex portions of the film to annoy viewers who dislike a plot.  The writer still has found plenty of corny and bad jokes to fill the film with though.

screen shot The Money Shot:
Sporting a beautiful remastered print, this film is heartily recommended to viewers who like porn with a plot, viewers who like adult films with a nurse theme and viewers who love the classics.  Although I am not a fan of fisting myself, it is still too bad that the cut footage was not reinserted into the film, however it’s presence elsewhere on the disc should satisfy viewers wishing to see these scenes.  Viewers who don’t like porn with a plot, require nasty sex or can’t stand a hairy woman should avoid this film.  This disc is a great example of how good a classic release can be.
