Initial Expectations: When I first saw Wild Goose Chase as a freshman in college I was amazed. I’m thrilled it’s on DVD and hope it holds up to my memories.

Initial Reaction: It’s just as good as I remember, and one of Stagliano’s best.

Who Should Watch It : Couples, anybody looking for fun porn, and fans of the fine female form

Who Should Avoid It: Anybody who thinks porn has to be nasty and or cheesy

Audio /Video Quality: The audio is clear and well balanced, especially when one considers the age of the film, but is a little on the soft side overall. There is a fair amount of dubbing throughout the movie and also a little static about an hour and a half into the movie (which thankfully only lasts a few seconds). John Stagliano shot this movie on film, which means there’s a little bit of grain to the picture. That’s all it means too, since he’s put some obvious effort into making it look as good as possible. I’ve seen features that were shot on video that don’t look this good. That isn’t to say the video’s perfect, since there are a few spots that are a little fuzzy, but it looks great for the age of the feature and for being shot on film.

Music: Wild Goose Chase won an award for the music, and it seems well earned. The music has a kinda cheesy and jazzy feel that sums up the early nineties only too well. It’s a little on the loud side at times, but fits the overall movie well.

Menus: Evil Angel has always put a lot of care into their menus, and nothing’s changed here. The main menu is nicely organized and has a little nice animation. Normally the chapter menu lets you choose a scene based on the leading lady in that scene, but here it’s given based on some of what’s happening in the movie. Finally, there’s a fetish menu that lets you jump to some of the common sex acts, such as blowjobs, cumshots, wrestling etc.

The Feature: Wild Goose Chase was the first porno I legally watched that showed me what kind of potential adult movies could have, and has been one of my favorites ever since I watched it, as well as a movie that I used as kind of a yardstick to judge other adult features against. I had simple reasons for picking it up back then, but mostly it was curiosity, since I had no clue who John Stagliano was and hadn’t even heard of Buttman. I couldn’t believe it when I was told there was a porno our there that went over two hours, had a lot of hot sex, and also had a plot! Okay, maybe hearing it was over two hours rather than pushing an hour and a half appealed to the cheap Scot inside me, but there was still a lot of horny curiosity.

The plot is fairly simple. Private dick / ass worshiper Joey Silvera is hired by welfare case Dolores Delux to find her missing daughter, the extremely cute Julianne James. Joey’s investigation leads him to a group of female wrestlers, and even into the ring himself, as he searches for her. He isn’t alone in his hunt, as T. T. Boy and Sean Michaels from the vice squad are also looking for Julianne as well as trying to shut down the female wrestling ring. As with many detective stories, things don’t end up being quite as simple as they start.

Julianne James starts out the feature shopping in an adult store, where she’s goosed by salesman John Stagliano (who’s face we never see in the scene but who his fans will know by many of his signature moves). She shows off her great ass and lets him play with her pussy a bit before dropping down to gobble his knob. Julianne lets him explore her a bit more before getting down on all fours so they can quickly fuck doggie style, as well as fucking standing up before he decorates her cheek. It’s a very different opening scene that should break many people in to the style of the movie. As always, Julianne is a lot of fun to watch and turns in a very nice performance here.

Joey Silvera starts out the next scene worshiping Angela Summers’s magnificent body. He starts with her perfect posterior, moves up to her great natural tits, and then goes back down to her pussy as she bends over the couch. Angela warms Joey up orally before climbing on cowgirl style. Angela takes a break to give Joey a little more oral love before letting him fuck her from behind while she fingers her ass. This scene immediately won me over to this movie when I first watched it, and made Angela Summers the first porn star I knew by name and looked for every time I went into the back room of video stores.

After some wrestling and a champagne fight, K. C. Williams, Patricia Kennedy, and Champagne let their real talents show for Randy West. They go between pairs and one large group throughout the scene, starting with a nice long warmup and moving on to pin Randy with their pussies. The girls finally team up on Randy to make him come, and take turns letting him pop in their mouths. It’s a great group scene that’s a lot of fun.

Cole Stevens follows boss-man John Stagliano’s orders to give Carolyn Monroe whatever she needs when he goes inside the house with her. He pulls her shorts up into her crack like she wants and worships her ass with his tongue and fingers. He doesn’t even try to make her suck his cock before he crawls up to fuck her from behind. They don’t waste any time fucking, and Carolyn soon ends up with a man milk moustache that covers more than just her upper lip. It’s a fairly quick scene, but hot and fun.

Vice squad cops T. T. Boy and Sean Michaels interrogate Jeanna Fine in their own, LA way, and as usual, it appears there was a camera around. Jeanna turns things around on them a bit by actually liking some of their methods. She sucks T. It’s an amazingly hot scene that will probably make some people try and find everything else Jeanna has done.

Christie decides to make it a little more fun with some oral action, and then lays back on the mat for Joey to fuck her without even letting Joey get undressed. They roll around a bit more so Christie can be on top before Joey puts her on the ropes to fuck her from behind. Before he can pop, however, three of the other girls come out to take care of him by smothering him with their asses and he doesn’t pop. It’s a hot scene that fits into everything great even without the pop shot.

Finally, Joey Silvera gets to hook up with Julianne James after getting rid of a little extra company. Julianne gives him some great looking head before letting Joey see one of her greatest ass-ets and fuck her from behind. They continue on with a little action of the cowgirl variety before Julianne lets him eat her from behind. They finally finish things up with a little tit fucking and a pop on Julianne’s great tits. It’s a great scene to end the feature with, and feels extremely natural. Joey and Julianne have great chemistry together, and although it’s very tame, it’s one of the best in the feature.

Although it’s over a decade old, Wild Goose Chase is still one heck of a great adult film. I can’t really just call it a porno since it really does go beyond just that. There’s plenty of sex, all of which is very good even at its worst, but it fits right into the plot as if it’s a natural part of the story. It’s hard to single out any one scene here, since so many ladies do such great jobs here, and they’re evenly met by guys like Joey, John, and Randy. The sex is rarely nasty, which makes it great for couples, yet it also has such great chemistry and energy that fans of nastier sex should also be able to enjoy it. The story is also very well done and comes complete with characters, and has a fairly unique style. The movie feels like a cross between a 1940s detective movie and a Buttman movie, which lets the plot and sex blend together nicely. A lot of other people have tried things similar to this, but in all the time I’ve been legally watching porn, as well as a little before that, I’ve never seen it done as well as this. There’s a reason I’ve held Wild Goose Chase up as one of those adult films that all other adult films should be judged against for so many years now. Seeing it on DVD, I can’t see any reason to change. Wild Goose Chase is easily one of the best adult films I’ve ever seen and has a lot of replay value.

Extras: Two photo galleries are included here, a production gallery with roughly thirty five snapshots and a behind the scenes gallery with about twenty one snapshots. Both contain probably the best looking photos I’ve seen in a feature that was made over five years ago, let alone ten. Filmographies are included for Angela Summers, Patricia Kennedy, Champagne, Carolyn Monroe, and Jeanna Fine as well as a cast list by scene and a bio of John “Buttman” Stagliano. Of course, there’s also website information.

The main extra, however, is a thirty five minute video commentary with John Stagliano. As always, John comes across as very real, very professional, and very intelligent. He talks quite a bit about working with 35 mm cameras, including how films were made then and now, and the differences between working with film and video. He also talks a bit about what he likes to do in his scenes compared to other movie makers and where some of the ideas in the movie came from. John talks about how he met some of the people in the film, as well as some other stories about the people. John also talks a little about why there’s no extra footage on the DVD, which was nice to hear since it was something I was really hoping for. It’s a great extra, and one that I’m always thrilled to see on Evil Angel DVDs.

Overall: Currently, Wild Goose Chase can be found online for between $23 and $30 with several stores offering it near the low end. This could be a bare-bones release and I’d have a hard time not recommending it at the lower end, and with the job Evil Angel has done here it’s more than worth it. Although there are a few minor faults, this is still a dang hot and dang fun movie. Evil Angel has given it a great transfer as well as a nice extra commentary. Check this one out!
