Science fiction movies are such an
odd thing. They have the ability to wow us at the time, but as the years
go by and the fiction becomes fact, the cool factor become cheese factor.
That's the case with Nick Orleans' Virtual Sex, which tries to explore
the then-new possibilities of virtual reality sex. In what has become all
too-common a theme, the story is based on a device in the not-too-distant future
that can turn fantasies into simulated sex. But, as with nearly all sci-fi
films, it's become really dated in the decade since it was filmed and is now
comical in how seriously the cast approached this role. Don't let the title fool you -- this isn't a virtual reality DVD such as the ever-popular My Plaything series but rather a shot-on-film, high budget couples feature that many consider a direct copy of Andrew Blake's movies made around that time. Judged strictly against Blake, Orleans falls short, but he does rises above the pack of most of the feature directors of the early 90's. The locations in Virtual Sex are extravagant, the visuals are soft, elegant, and erotic, and the atmosphere is couples' friendly. But it's hard to get over the cheesy props, such as the Lovemaker II (a contraption that looks like a pair of sunglasses and earbud headphones) and Athena 2001 (think of it as HAL from 2001 with a female voice, made out of the inside of a CD jewel case). It's also strange to see the performers try to pull this one off as serious artistic film. That aside, how's the naughty bits? The lovely Kelly O'Dell (who's one of my favorite blondes ever, with her perfect tits and playful attitude) is the leading lady. Her tongue-lashing of Tony Tedeschi's cock or Tiffany Minx's pussy is groin inspiring. Although I think her performance in Blake's Sensual Exposure (not yet available on DVD) is better, this is one of her best lead roles that you're likely to find on DVD. Tina Tyler also shines as Kelly's friend. Not only do we get to see her don a pair of pantyhose, but in a bachelorette fantasy segment, she shows off her intense blowjob style in a bridal veil. Pantyhose fetishists will love the masturbation through nylon as Kelly and Tina get off to their virtual fantasies. Unfortunately, as the movie goes on, it gets more and more boring and oddly a lot less explicit. The fantasy setups don't really fit with the movie, as if they they were independent vignettes. The penetration shots are few and far between toward the end and tend to favor softcore "cheat" shots. And the final threesome between Kelly O'Dell, Sierra, and a very young, thin, and clean cut Mark Davis is a really disappointing ending that lacks heat and any sort of emotional conclusion to an otherwise elegant film. While it's not a bad couples film, I can't really recommend it unless you're a big fan of Kelly O'Dell or Tina Tyler. Even those who might appreciate it more, such as Andrew Blake or Nick Orleans fans, will probably agree that it's mostly a hit or miss movie that has become dated in the past decade.
