With the exception of John Stagliano, no adult director has ever been more influential than Andrew Blake. Soon after Blake's first movie was released, imitators filed onto video store shelves as fast as modern distribution channels would allow them. Almost all of them were an embarrassment. It seemed that the copy-cats missed the point, entirely. Andrew Blake's movies weren't sexy because the actresses wore sunglasses, or because the music was moody. Those movies were sexy because the girls looked better than they ever did anywhere else, and along with being a true professional, Blake understood the power of tease. Only one "knock off" worked, in my opinion, and that's Nicholas Orleans' Virtual Sex.

Blake's diehard fans will find Virtual Sex technically inferior, but on its own, Orleans movie looks good and it delivers the moody porn experience couples and women may want to see. In fact, the fantasies in Virtual Sex are all from the female perspective. Set in the future, Kelly O'Dell has somehow overcome her natural loopiness to become a very successful and rich business woman. Among all the material goods success can bring is a device called The Lovemaker II, which is a gameboy sized device attached to a pair of flashing sunglasses. Don the glasses, randomly push a series of buttons, and The Lovemaker II instantly inserts you into a sexual fantasy. I'd buy one, no matter what the cost.

Kelly O'Dell may be the quintessential dumb blonde. I mean that as a compliment. She's the kind of fresh faced girl who can't smile without laughing and fucks with the giddiness of a child on a jungle gym. The first time she turns her toy on, she's mentally whisked away to a well appointed parlor where Tony Tedeschi and his erection are waiting for her. O'Dell really is a cute girl; she looks like a fun time. One wonders, however, if her cuteness doesn't take away from the sophisticated look Orleans is going for. Still, she does her job well, and Tedeschi soon gives her a (weak) facial.

If sophistication is the director's intention, then Tina Tyler (billed here as Tina Tedeschi) is perfectly cast. She and O'Dell share the same fantasy of a ribald bachelorette party where Tyler, outfitted in a flowing wedding dress, sucks dick while her friends watch and join in. It's fun to watch O'Dell and Tyler together. In my mind, they occupy opposite ends of the porn spectrum. O'Dell is the bubble headed blonde surfer girl, and Tyler is the refined sophisticate. Both types are fine by me. Sometimes you feel like a bag of Skittles; other times you feel like sticking your dick in a box of Godiva chocolates. Surely, Tyler's partner isn't thinking about candy as he watches her and her friends take turns with his dick and each other. Finally, he unloads into her open mouth.

On his way to the film's finale with O'Dell, Sierra, and an incredibly young looking Mark Davis, Orleans makes worthwhile stops along the way. The most impressive, among them is an outdoor lesbian encounter between O'Dell and a new to the biz Tiffany Mynx, who arises dramatically from a swimming pool. Brunette beauty Deborah Welles also is impressive in a scene in which O'Dell experiences what it's like to be a man fucking a woman. Tony Tedeschi plays her surrogate.

Finally, O'Dell returns for the closing three-way which takes place on a cold marble floor in the expansive foyer of an even more expansive mansion. Cold floors probably don't make the best sexual surface, but they sure look good. And so does O'Dell who gives that three-quarters over the shoulder dog-style eye contact better than any porn star I've ever seen. And I've seen a bunch of them.

Like the Andrew Blake movies that inspired it, the true star of the show is the art direction. When I say the movie looks good, I'm not just talking about the girls. I'm speaking of the locations, the special effects, the costumes, and even the transfer to DVD. The sound is a little off at times, but that's not the problem of VCA's DVD authors. That's just the way it was shot. VCA does a good job with their DVDs and this is not an exception. Among the disc's extras is a photo gallery, biographies with links, and all the other little non-essential additions you see on a disc like web site links, and a list of other titles.

Virtual Sex is well made porn, even if it's not completely original. There's not enough of Kelly O'Dell on DVD, but there's plenty of her here, so fans have cause for celebration. Couples may prefer it's moodiness and female point of view over the raincoat fodder so common on store shelves.
