Initial Expectations: I haven’t seen anything from this studio, so I’m going in with an open mind.

The Technical Stuff

Audio /Video Quality: The English audio is clear and well balanced, and matches the English subtitles pretty well. The video is clear, as it should be with animation, and the animation style varies throughout the feature. Some of it is about the level of Pokemon, but there’s also quite a bit that’s at the level of a third grade flip-book.

Music: The music is typical for Oriental movies and cartoons. It’s nicely balanced with the rest of the audio, and works well for the feature.

Menus: The menus aren’t too bad. The main menu has some decent animation, and the chapter menu lets you choose one of a multitude of places to go to based on a title for each scene and a still of the scene.

The Feature

When Masahiko fell down as a boy, a woman in a straw hat helped him up. He’s loved her ever since that moment, and has remained a virgin so that he could be pure when he finds her again. The only problem is that he doesn’t remember who she is. He’s not sure if it could be one of the people he knows, such as Mitsuko, his boss’s wife who is hornier than heck while her husband is away, or if it’s Fong Lee, the girl who’s staying at their house to study martial arts under his father. It’s a tough job, but Masahiko isn’t going to let any of his dirty fantasies, his fellow students, his teachers, or anything or anybody else get in his way.

Scene 1 - Mitsuko and a guy

The first full scene is between a guy and Mitsuko, who he recognizes as “the slut in the park”. He hears her call to him, and goes over to find her begging him to rape her. He fucks her from behind, and finally pops in her pussy. After he finishes, she begs him for more, and sucks him and fucks him again, taking a facial as well as anther pop in her pussy.

This is an okay animated scene. The rape beginning started to lose me, but since the girl took control of the entire scene, I have a hard time seeing it as a rape scene. As is, it works great as a lustful female domination scene, and the multiple times adds some nice humor.

Scene 2 - Masahiko and Rei

Masahiko gets it on with Rei after she’s taken over with an evil spirit at the temple. She sucks his cock and titty fucks him while teasing him a little verbally. Finally, Rei takes a nice facial.

This is a pretty hot scene. Rei plays the temptress extremely well, while Masahiko plays the resistant lover. The tension builds nicely throughout the scene, right up to the release at the end.

Scene 3 - Masahiko and Fong Lee

Masahiko fantasizes about Fong Lee in the final scene of the first episode. He holds her lovingly before licking and fingering her. They fuck in a few positions before coming together.

This is another nicely done scene that’s nicely led up to. Although it’s a cartoon, it still feels like there’s chemistry between Fong Lee and Masahiko. The animation shows a fair amount of detail, but nothing to do with the pop and never both characters on screen at the same time.

Scene 4 - Masahiko and Aoi

Masahiko starts out the second episode getting head from Aoi, one of his fellow students, while watching a movie in class. He asks her to stop, but she refuses to until he agrees to be her boyfriend. Masahiko refuses, and finally runs off without popping.

This is a pretty fun scene. The young aspect is pushed very well with the animation and voice of Aoi. It’s also playful, which is also helped by the animation style as well as the ending. This is a fun scene that works the sexual aspect in nicely.

Scene 5 - Asuko and Masahiko

Asuko fantasizes about Masahiko next. She diddles herself while thinking of sucking his cock and fucking him. Finally, they come together with an internal pop that’s never shown.

This is another nicely done scene. The masturbation sequences are blended very well with the fantasy so that they play off each other rather than interfering with each other. There’s very little of the actual intercourse shown, and the masturbation scenes show just enough to be a great tease.

Scene 6 - Masahiko and Miss Hanako, Masahiko and Aoi

After his science teacher Miss Hanako, a teacher Masahiko later learns is dating his father, ties him down and works him over to get a sperm sample, he has to deal with Aoi. Aoi makes him a deal to leave him alone, but he then finds her masturbating while looking at him when he makes it clear that she isn’t going to be his girlfriend. He watches her masturbate before giving in to her. They exchange oral favors before Masahiko regains his focus and leaves.

These are okay scenes. The scene with Miss Hanako is short but sweet, with Aoi’s scene going on much longer. Aoi’s scene is also a lot more fun, and nicely paced. The ending is a bit of a letdown, but works well for the plot.

Scene 7 - Masahiko and Kyoko

Finally, Masahiko learns that Asuko’s sister Kyoko is the girl he’s been searching for. He and Kyoko exchange oral favors before taking each other’s virginity. They take turns being on top as they fuck, and as usual, finish things with an internal pop.

This is a great final scene. Everything in the feature, and especially in the second episode, leads up to this scene extremely well, and once again the characters feel like they have great chemistry despite being animated. It’s a loving and tender scene and does a great job of showing some of the insecurities of two people in love losing their virginity together.

Girl Next Door is a decently done animated feature. The story is nicely done, and works in some great humor. Perhaps the thing I’m most impressed about, however, is the sex. Most of the anime I’ve seen has been rough and focusing quite a bit on rape. This is more of an adult cartoon, and although far from perfect, was a very nice change. Girl Next Door is a nice, fun, and fairly soft cartoon that’s worth checking out if you want something a little different.

The slideshow lasts just over a minute with about four seconds per very nice looking snapshot.

The Bottom Line:

Currently, Critical Mass DVDs can be found online for between $15 and $26, with few stores offering them. This seems like a pretty fair price for what you get here. The feature is nicely done, and blends several sex styles with a decent story. The feature is nicely transferred, although the animation lacks at times. Sadly, there isn’t really anything for extras.

Note to Critical Mass: This is a good start for a DVD. Thank you for putting a whole story on one DVD rather than releasing a separate DVD for each episode!
