The Movie

Underbelly: Beneath the World of Porn is a documentary about being in the porn industry by director Robert Rhine of Girls and Corpses magazine. An aspect that makes Underbelly interesting and unique is the views of the adult entertainment industry given within the documentary are entirely from women working in the industry. Another great aspect of the documentary is that the opinions offered aren't just limited to adult actresses; cam models have been included in the documentary as well.

The actresses and cam models featured in the documentary discuss a broad range of topics regarding the adult entertainment industry. All of the industry members featured in the documentary are well spoken, and tell some genuinely interesting stories. The topics range from how the actresses got into the adult entertainment industry, and their first experiences shooting in the adult entertainment industry. What the industry is like to work in, and porn sex versus regular sex. How their family handled their job in the adult entertainment industry, and stalkers. The stigma of working in the adult entertainment industry, and how to survive long-term in the adult entertainment industry.

The majority of Underbelly appears to have been shot on the 2017 AVN Adult Entertainment Expo in Las Vegas, Nevada. The documentary was mostly shot on the convention floor although some portions appear to have been shot in hotel rooms in the Las Vegas area as well during the convention weekend. Sunny Lane's segments seem to have been shot at Dennis Hof's former Love Ranch Cathouse that was located in Crystal, Nevada.

While shooting on the convention floor allows fans of the adult industry who have never attended the AVN Adult Entertainment Expo a glimpse into what the convention looks like, the noise and the constant activity can pull the viewer away from the actress being interviewed. Overall segments like Sunny Lane's, Casey Calvert's (that was shot in a hotel bar), and Romance's (that was shot in a more private room) ultimately work far better than the convention floor ones.

The biggest issue that Underbelly has is that way too many participants are crammed into the short run time. The viewer continually feels like each person had far more to contribute but wasn't able to due to time constraints. Either Underbelly should have focused on fewer participants or Underbelly should have been longer to allow each participant more time.

Despite its flaws, Underbelly: Beneath the World of Porn is a compelling documentary for viewers who want a look into the lives of some of their favorite adult actresses. The documentary seems to only briefly touch on the first level of each topic before moving onto the next one, and some of the participants are given way too little screen time. However, there is a nice mix of the types of adult entertainment actresses that are featured, and all of them share interesting information. Fans of the adult industry will enjoy this brief glimpse behind the curtain.

The Edition

The edition of Underbelly: Beneath the World of Porn was a digital screener, as such, there may be differences between the screened edition and the release edition. Underbelly was shot digitally and is presented in the anamorphic widescreen aspect ratio of 1.78:1 in 540p. The image presented on the release looks good with nice colors and definition. There aren't any noticeable issues with the image presentation for Underbelly.

Underbelly is presented with an English Stereo audio track. The audio presentation in the movie is uneven; there are periods where the sound level is lower than other portions of the movie. There is a hiss present during Sunny Lane and Casey Calvert's segments. Overall, the participants can be heard and understood at all times, but a more even presentation would be desired.

There weren't any extras provided with the digital screener for review for Underbelly.

Final Thoughts

Underbelly: Beneath the World of Porn is a documentary by Robert Rhine, of Girls and Corpses magazine, that was shot at the 2017 AVN Adult Entertainment Expo and takes a glimpse behind the curtain of the adult entertainment industry. The views given in Underbelly come from adult movie actresses and cam models. The documentary has its faults but is still enjoyable to watch.
