Review:
Director Bree Mills offers up a deeply introspective and personal look into the trials and tribulations of coming of age as a lesbian in her newly-released, autobiographical film, "Teenage Lesbian", from Adult Time. With the youthful Kristen Scott in the lead role and playing the part of the confused and budding ingénue to utter perfection, coupled with an engrossing and relatable plot, this production delicately balances itself upon the fine intersection of mainstream, indie release and adult fare in a way that few can. Indeed, set in the 1990's, not only are the intricate emotional aspects of Kristen's journey captured elegantly and with an experienced sophistication, but they manage to blend seamlessly with the film's sexual components, as well. To be sure, the sex flows naturally out of the situations in which the characters find themselves, yet still remains erotic and true, never taking a shortcut and cheapening itself for a quick thrill. Included along the way are a variety of encounters and challenges faced by Scott, from bullies who attack her and cast her out simply for who she is, to hypocritical "straight" girls who use her for their own sexual diversion and experimentation, to awkward interactions with her parents and peers, and so on. In many ways, one doesn't actually need to be a lesbian--or even female, for that matter--to relate to much of this release. The feelings of confusion, awkwardness, loneliness, rejection, being bullied, and trying to find oneself felt by Kristen's character are, to a large degree, universal. In a general sense, they are as much a part of the broader human experience as they are of the more specific lesbian one, and, through this lens, Kristen's (truly Bree's) journey transcends its initial focus and touches upon a much more collective nerve...making its scope potentially much greater than it may have even attempted to be. Of course, this film captures all of this--and more--eloquently, sensitively, erotically, and with a personal touch rarely seen in adult films. In a word, it is brilliant, and it is deserving of the highest accolades. Kudos to all involved. Do yourself a favor and check it out, lesbian, female, or not.
(As a note: I had written up all of the standard "sex scene" descriptions for this flick and, after writing the opening paragraph, I have decided to scrap them. The standard "fingers and tongues" drivel, no matter how well-written or even well-intentioned, just doesn't seem appropriate for a release such as this. Of course, there are other reviews that go into this, and for those interested in the raw mechanics of it all, I'd recommend checking them out. I have nothing against such details, but personally and in this case, I've opted to leave them out.)
