The Technical Stuff

Audio /Video Quality: The technical aspects are very nicely done. The audio is well balanced and free of background noises. There’s a little camera noise, but that’s it for audio problems. The video is also very nicely done, and presented in the widescreen anamorphic format. It’s nicely lit and has just a little grain to give it a more artistic feeling. There’s a little camera motion, but for a semi-pro movie it looks very good.

Music: There’s a little music to the movie, but not a lot. Some of the music has lyrics, which sets it apart nicely, and it definitely helps things out with how it’s done.

Menus: The main menu is very simple, but has an artistic still that gave me hope for the feature. The chapter menu is very basic, and lets you choose a scene based on a still from each chapter and a chapter number.

The Feature

You know you can see it coming. It’s prohibition all over again, but this time it’s the Smoke Nazis who win instead of the Ladies Temperance League. A few years after the ban they’ve created people who will do almost anything for a smoke. The nonsmokers have won, but at what cost?

Scene 1 - McKenzie Sinclaire and Jack Cole

When he finds brunette McKenzie going through garbage cans searching for discarded butts, he makes a deal with her to get a little loving for a few cigarettes. That was part of the deal for McKenzie, which I thought was a great way to work safe sex into the scene. Having it missing actually suck out to me, and I was a little disappointed because of it. This is a well done scene that worked okay for me.

Scene 2 - Marie Madison

Scene 3 - Halle Turner and Bailey

Halle makes a deal with dealer Bailey to get some smokes. Scene 4 - Marie Madison and Mark Audess

Smoke Junkies is another Marie Madison movie that shows that they’re far beyond the average “amateur” studio. The camera work has a few minor flaws and blemishes, but here they work as much to the movie’s advantage than its disadvantage. This is a very dark movie, and the blemishes give it a slightly darker and more artistic feeling. There isn’t so much a plot as a general idea running through the movie, and it’s done well enough that it’s almost scary at times. With the current political attitude towards smokers (who are constantly badmouthed by the government despite them paying how much a pack in taxes that supports a hell of a lot more than just health care?), some of the fear in the movie comes from being fairly believable about it not being too far in the future. It’s also helped out by a fantastic performance by Marie Madison as Amanda the smoke junkie that I’d easily put up against the performance of any AVN Best Performer from the last several years. That said, Smoke Junkies definitely isn’t for everybody. It’s very dark and there’s a heavy focus on smoking in each of the scenes. It’s very nicely balanced with the rest of the action, which means that people who don’t smoke (as opposed to non-smokers) might enjoy it as well as those with a smoke fetish. Smoke Junkies is dedicated to the late great Bill Hicks, and I think that if he were able to see it, Goat Boy would strap Marie to his face like a feed bag in order to thank her.

The Extra Stuff

The only extras on the movie DVD are trailers for Where There’s Smoke, Indiscretions, Nice In the Ass 2, Dirty Things, Girlfriends, and Nasty Friends 3. If you go with the two DVD set, the second DVD starts with trailers for both Smoke Junkies movies, Orally Fixated, Yeah, I Swallow 2, Nasty Friends 2, Girlfriends Too, Hey Marie Madison “You Gonna Blow Me or What?”, and Nice in the Ass. There’s also a photo gallery lasting about seven minutes with roughly six seconds per decent looking full screen photo. Finally, there’s a behind the scenes featurette.

Smoke Screen: The Making of Smoke Junkies lasts over forty minutes and is also presented in the anamorphic widescreen format. It nicely works from scene to scene, capturing the cast as they work with the cameramen, Mark Audess, and Marie Madison to get things right. There’s a few fun comments back and forth and plenty of retakes. It’s a very nice behind the scenes featurette, and for the most part, very professional as well.

The Bottom Line:

Currently, Marie Madison’s movies can mostly be found on her website for between about $15 and $20. If you want dark and well made porn, this one’s going to be well worth the money. There isn’t a lot of plot, but the general feel works very well for the movie. The technical aspects are nicely handled and there’s some good care put into the extras if you choose to go with the 2 DVD set.
