Initial Expectations: Adult anime can be a little different, which is what I’m hoping for here. I just hope it’s the good kind of different.

Initial Reaction: It’s kind of fun, and much more enjoyable than a lot of other anime I’ve seen.

Who Should Watch It : Anybody looking for something different or curious about anime

Who Should Avoid It: Anybody who wants more graphic and rough anime

Audio /Video Quality: The technical aspects are very good. The video is simple, yet works. Five minutes into the feature I thought “Hmmmm. Add a couple animals fighting and this could be an adult version of Pokemon”. Towards the end of the first episode it flickers a bit towards the top, but that’s the only problem that really appears throughout both episodes. The overall animation is a little better in the second episode, and looks like it might have been made a fair amount of time later. The audio is very clear and well balanced, and normally agrees quite well with the English subtitles. There are a few differences which do change things quite a bit, so some people might want to give both a shot. The subtitles are often a bit rougher, and I think probably are closer to the original translation than the dubbing. It’s a nice trade off, since it seems that most people who want dubbed features want things to blend in just perfectly with what’s around them rather than trying to understand, or even just accept, a slightly different culture.

Music: The audio is pretty typical of the other anime I’ve seen, and is nicely balanced with the rest of the audio.

Menus: Both the main menu and the chapter menu are extremely basic and don’t have any animation.

The Feature: Slight Fever Syndrome contains two thirty nine minute episodes revolving around Miss Mizuki (or Miss Moore in the dubbed version), the nurse at a private junior college. Although it wasn’t in the job description, she finds herself working more as a sex therapist than a nurse. She finds herself growing popular with both the students and faculty as the word quietly spreads around the school.

The first episode doesn’t have much of a continuing plot other than Miss Mizuki finding that sex seems to find her. She finds herself teaching a girl how to masturbate so her friends won’t make fun of her. She later massages her breasts since the girl has heard that it’ll help them grow and threatens to tell everybody about Miss Mizuki’s masturbation demonstration if she doesn’t. Apparently she’s never heard of the effect that toilet paper has on many women’s bodies. Miss Mizuki also finds herself with one of the female teachers after trying to convince her that anal sex isn’t all that unusual, as well as finding a growing attraction for another teacher.

The second episode has more of a plot, and revolves around Miss Mizuki being attracted to Kirishima, one of the male students. She finds him having sex with another student in the library only to have him catch her with one of the female teachers later. Only two things complicate their romance, outside of him being a student and her being on the faculty. First, one of the girls Miss Mizuki normally counsels is convinced she’s in love with him. Second, Mr, Endo, one of the other teachers, has his heart, among other things I’m sure, set on Miss Mizuki. Of course, this also leads to some sex for them, sinec Miss Mizuki has a little more counseling to do for a jilted girl and Mr. Endo has a new intern.

Surprisingly, the sex is pretty tame and handled very well. Yes, there’s underage sex, anal sex, and a bit of resistance, but there’s never anybody being drugged or openly raped as in Cool Devices, Operations: 1-4 . Depending on whether you watch the subtitled or dubbed version, however, you will see quite a difference in the attitudes towards sex. Most of the attitude, however, is that of fun. The scenes are handled with a bit of humor, which is emphasized by some of the extremely cartoonish features and reactions. Eyes and mouths expand to take up almost the entire face on some characters at times, and there are some awfully big beads of sweat. It’s also helped out by not being too explicit. There aren’t a lot of close-up penetration shots, and the cocks are normally drawn to look more like a sausage than a cock. The sex is also surprisingly one sided. The first episode only contains one scene where there’s any reciprocation, which also makes for some short scenes. It also gives Slight Fever Syndrome a bit of the feel of classic porn, having some of the feel of classic features like Debbie Does Dallas.

Slight Fever Syndrome is a fun piece of fluff. It varies a bit between the two episodes, with the second episode showing a bit more polish. Unlike many Japanese features, the sex is fun and fairly light. It isn’t always about the man’s pleasure, with some of the scenes ending when the woman comes rather than when the man does. It’s nicely brought together with a light and fun premise, that’s nicely handled. Slight Fever Syndrome is a fun little adult cartoon that’s a nice break from some of the other porn out there.

Overall: Most of Kitty’s anime releases can be found online for between $20 and $24. This is a pretty good price when one looks at what you get for some of the other adult anime DVDs out there. There’s almost an hour and a quarter here, which makes up the entire series. There isn’t much for extras here, which is pretty standard for anime DVDs, but the transfer is handled quite nicely.

Note to Kitty: It looks like you’ve done a nice job with this DVD. It’s great to see that you’re giving the consumer a decent length feature rather than half hour features like some other companies. In the future, however, please be more honest about the running time of your features.
