The Movie

The Sins of Johnny X is a hardcore gay feature from the mid-seventies. The Sins of Johnny X suffers from a lot of issues that make the film a dull flop. The story is that Bob (Clay Grant) picks up Sam (Dave Daniels) and despite Sam having little interest in Bob, Sam moves in. When going through the paper, Bob finds an advert for Johnny X (Kurt Williams), who he calls to spice up his and Sam's love life.

The story for the film isn't very compelling and is filled with logical issues. This reviewer knows that this is just porn, however, the plot issues are so huge it is just plain hard to ignore them. Sam always seems uncomfortable despite being picked up and despite moving in with Bob. Why someone who seems to have such little interest in someone else would move in is not believable. Another huge issue with the story is that it is obvious from events in the film that time goes by, however, the film does a horrible job of showing that time has gone by.

The sex scenes are also an issue. Normally this reviewer doesn't rate the sex scenes in a gay film due to being straight. However, The Sins of Johnny X will be an exception to this since the sex scenes are obviously poorly done. The biggest issue with the sex scenes is that Dave Daniels always looks like he would prefer to be somewhere — anywhere — else than participating in them. The sex scenes also seem incomplete. It isn't easy to put a finger on what exactly causes this but something just seems missing, more than Daniels' enjoyment. It is doubtful that most viewers will find the sex scenes in The Sins of Johnny X fulfilling.

The highlight of The Sins of Johnny X is an underwater sex sequence, which looks nice. However, that alone is not enough to save the film. The characters are flat, the story is dull, and the sex scenes look like they are a chore. This reviewer isn't sure anything else needs to be said about The Sins of Johnny X.

The Edition

The edition of The Sins of Johnny X screened is the streaming only edition on Exploitation.TV. Vinegar Syndrome has done a nice job with their streaming only version of The Sins of Johnny X. The Sins of Johnny X was shot on film and it looks like Vinegar Syndrome has utilized a film print for this release. The Sins of Johnny X is presented in the academy aspect ratio of 1.33:1. The image contains print damage, artifacts, and grain. There are also some small jumps in the film. This isn't the best that Vinegar Syndrome has to offer image wise but is far from the worst.

The Sins of Johnny X is presented with an English monaural audio track. The audio has jumps, hiss, and crackles present. Some of the dialog in the film is hindered by the jumps, however, most of the dialog in the film is clear and easy to understand.

Vinegar Syndrome hasn't included any extras for this release.

Final Thoughts

The Sins of Johnny X is a poor gay adult hardcore film that has an uninteresting story and one of the main cast members never seems to be into the sex scenes at all. There really isn't anything about this film that needs to be experienced by the viewer. Vinegar Syndrome has done a nice job with their streaming only release of The Sins of Johnny X on Exploitation.TV with a nice looking image and decent audio quality.
