The Sad Girls of the Mountains is a comedic German adult feature film by co-writers and co-directors Theo Meow and Candy Flip. The film itself presents itself as an exposé being done for Gonzo by journalist Hendrik Adams (Fred), who is going up into the mountains to interview the Sad Girls. The Sad Girls are a group of four girls — Tess (Candy Flip), Lara (Vulpa Vulva), Selma (Jenz Mau), and Momo (Andrea) — who have moved into the middle of nowhere opposing their past affluent lifestyles and are shooting erotic short films to support female Kurdish soldiers.

At first, The Sad Girls of the Mountains appears to be a parody of gonzo journalism exposé programs. While it is a parody of gonzo journalism expos&eqcute; programs, The Sad Girls of the Mountains has far more levels than the standard parody layer.

Buried deeper in the movie is a commentary about how people end up getting defined by others who aren't in their position. Through the beginning of the movie, the people interviewed to give their opinions of what the Sad Girls should be doing, and how they should be behaving.

The character of Hendrik Adams is a look at how society views gender roles. He repeatedly calls himself a feminist throughout the film, but his behavior is that of the alpha male. And when the situation calls for it, he even quickly steps into the role of trying to save the woman in distress.

Even the Sad Girls themselves are caricatures. They are rebelling against coming from their good homes and having everything by going into the mountains. But up there, they are living in a house made for wealthy oligarchs. Despite tossing away their family's wealth, they are still residing in a residence for the wealthy.

Theo Meow and Candy Flip have expertly interwoven these layers together, and possibly more layers this reviewer missed, into one cohesive film. The Sad Girls of the Mountains feels very much like something that P.J. O'Rourke would have written had he ever crossed over into adult film.

The actors and actresses in the film are outstanding. Except for the few that play themselves, the cast is credited as the characters they portray, which certainly gives the viewer the feeling that this is a real documentary. Their performances in the film are entirely believable, not once during the viewing do you stop and go — wait that is just an actor or actress portraying a character.

In addition, Theo Meow and Candy Flip haven't just created an excellent mockumentary; they have created an entire world for the Sad Girls. They have designed a Sad Girls website at www.sadgirls.de and have made seven short films (Call to God, Cry Me a River, Forest Sisters, Fuck the Pain Away, Kakao Sluts, Sad Girls Must Be Spanked, Wintertime Sadness), which are made to look like the Sad Girls themselves made them.

The Sad Girls of the Mountains is excellent all on its own. The entire multimedia experience that Theo Meow and Candy Flip have created for the film is even better. The Sad Girls of the Mountains is the kind of adult film experience that rarely (never?) comes along.

The Sad Girls of the Mountains was shot digitally and is presented in the anamorphic widescreen aspect ratio of 1.78:1. The picture is flawless with beautiful colors and no noticeable blemishes during the film. There is a Gonzo bug in the top right-hand corner of the screen.

The Sad Girls of the Mountains is presented with a Stereo audio track with portions in German, English, and Portuguese. The sound quality is excellent, free from issues. There are German and English subtitles available for the film.

Meow Meow and Sad Girls haven't included any extras along with the feature film; however, the Sad Girls short films are also available on PinkLabel.TV and probably should be considered to be extras for the main feature.

The Sad Girls of the Mountains is the kind of adult film that seldom comes along. The film is a beautifully done parody that is well crafted on so many levels. With each viewing, people will notice another layer buried in the film that they were never aware of before. This reviewer can't recommend The Sad Girls of the Mountains enough! Meow Meow has done an excellent job with their streaming-only edition available on PinkLabel.TV with a beautiful picture and great sound quality.
