PREFACE:
Back in what I might call one of the major "transitionary" periods of porn (somewhere between the heavy raincoater super-gonzo of today--i.e. Jules Jordan, Red Light District, etc.--and the rampant erratic offerings of the early and mid 90's) Private Media could almost always be counted on to deliver three things: beautiful women, anal sex, and facials. Private's work was not always the most scorchingly hot sex on the planet, but it was always a safe place to go when you needed a little breather from the hit or miss pursuit of the perfect American porn movie. At least this is what Private has meant to me over the years. Others love Private dearly, and swear by a lot of their movies, and I can't argue with that; but to me, they've principally been used as dependable porn at a time when most porn was anything but. However, in the last couple years, Private has made some changes. They have gotten softer, while the rest of the world has gotten harder--or perhaps more accurately, they have changed very little, while everyone around them has begun assuming the very role that Private used to assume--the spearhead of the mainstream hardcore movement. Private has by no means lost its appeal however, even though this movie will be the first Private movie I've watched in well over a year.

INTRODUCTION:
Fever is a feature based porn movie directed by Antonio Adamo. Adamo comes highly recommended by people I respect--one of whom is Aybesea, whose fine review of this title can be found here. Besides, Petra Short is lookin' damn cute on the cover of this box, so given all these factors, I have some fairly high hopes for this one. Adamo, from what I hear, concentrates heavily on the artistic qualities of sexual interaction (much like Andrew Blake). This kind of viewpoint holds a special appeal for me; as to me sex can be art just as the very best mainstream films can. There's something very satisfying about watching a tastefully, and artfully produced sexual encounter that goes beyond mere voyeuristic sexual pleasure--it can enhance arousal with a level of excitement or a stimulation of subconscious emotion that makes my ultimate release all the more pleasurable. Blake has done this for me. Stagliano has done this for me. Even Gregory Dark has done it. I'm trying not to get my hopes up too high, but perhaps Adamo can do it as well. At the very least, I'm feeling pretty well assured that I will find beautiful women, anal sex, and facials; and that, by my tastes, is an excellent start.

Opening Credits: The movie opens with a cityscape, and some interesting music. Most of the credits are given against black screen.

SCENE 1:

The Girls
Mandy Bright is a pretty, honey blonde with long hair. I'm used to seeing her hair straight, but it's curly here and that threw me for a loop at first in terms of her identification. The Gist
All three girls are very pretty, that is not in question. Mandy, with her curly hair, is the least attractive in my mind, but even she is a pleasure to watch. The sex in this scene was good, but I found myself distracted by two things. One was the heavy handed editing style. Penetrations and positional changes were rarely shown, and although the sex itself was aesthetically pleasing, the lack of any kind of transition other than jump cuts was bumpy, and disappointing to me. The other distracting aspect was the apparent tendency for Adamo to heavily direct the action. It was clear that he put the performers in specific positions, and encouraged particular actions in order to achieve a certain aesthetic picture. While I certainly appreciate that this kind of thing can be effective if done well, I found that in this case, the scene didn't flow easily--it seemed more a cut together collage of predetermined positioning and action than it did a smooth flowing transpiration of events. That said, however, I still found the scene to be pretty hot and watchable, with some exceptionally pretty women, two handsome men, some good sexual moments and a nicely strokeable climax.

Interlude: Alberto and Franco sit in a restaurant. They discuss how they shouldn't get involved with those girls--but that they've taught them well, and the girls are prepared. I don't know what the hell either of them is talking about, but blessed relief from this horrifically scripted, overdubbed nightmare comes soon enough when they start to kiss...

SCENE 2:
BARBY & ALBERTO REY
The Girl
Barby is extremely pretty with short dark hair. She's looking very classy in some eveningwear and some deep red lipstick. She also has a gorgeous smile when she shows it.

The Action
After some unusually erotic, but typically brief kissing, Barby sits this extremely well built man down on the couch and does some really erotic oral exploration of his nipples. Again, this is too brief, but they do continue participating in some nice kissing action before she finally lays back and he gives her some head. The video purposefully switches between color and black and white here, but to me it's not too distracting. The Gist
I think I'm starting to get a grasp on Adamo's style. While I still found fault with the way the scene was edited, I don't mind his technical video graphic choices, as they do have the effect of adding a stylistic eroticism to the scene. Barby looks fantastic, and for the women out there, so does Alberto, and there are some very intimate erotic moments here. I dare say though, that most of the heat of the scene is generated from the director's stylistic choices rather than actual chemistry between the performers. I liked this scene for what it was, and was quite turned on by it, but I can also see where others might find it cold and empty--a sort of dissonant, stylistic eroticism that is very Andrew Blake like indeed.

The Girls
Cleare is a tight-bodied honey with very short black hair. She's pretty attractive, but I'm only a fan of very short hair in certain situations, and this isn't one of them. Still though, Cleare has enough going for her to hold my attention.

The Action

All in all, this is another solid, and yet stylistically produced scene.

Mark intrudes on the conversation and they engage in some horrible dialogue that I probably don't even need to repeat. Suffice it to say, before long some "clients" show up--they will apparently be bidding for Chris and Vanessa in a slave auction. Mark says he has a plan though, and slips from the room.

The "pimp" entertains the buyers (most of whom are masked, and some of whom are women), while Mark sets off a car alarm outside. One of the men goes to investigate, and when he does Mark clocks him over the head. Meanwhile, the "pimp" shows off the merchandise and the auction begins. Outside, Franco has driven a car up to the front gate, and Cleare gets out in an obvious attempt to seduce the guard. Because this is porn, their ploy works, and at long last we move on to the next sex scene.

SCENE 5:

The Action
Cleare and the guard (Bob Terminator) go off into some sort of utility or storage room, where Cleare starts things off by rubbing his cock through his pants. As this is an orgy scene, I generally start out with a bit of a bias against it. As orgy scenes go, I suppose this one was ok, but I really don't much like group sex. It's generally too unfocused. There are always exceptions of course, but this wasn't one of them. Petra is my favorite and a really hot girl. There's some nice energy, some nice anal, and some midiocre/average DPs (but I have a bias against those as well). All the women do look beautiful though, and the camera work and video quality really accentuate that aspect of the scene. For me this was a lukewarm scene at best, and although beautifully lit and competently shot, there were about 4 or 5 too many performers in it to really get me excited.

Interlude & End Credits: The guard that Cleare fucked realizes he was duped, and the "pimp" realizes his party was crashed. The credits roll, and this god-awful script finally puts me out of my misery.

PRODUCTION QUALITY:
This was a high quality video production, which made use of some filters and post-production techniques that are relatively unusual in today's porn landscape. That doesn't necessarily mean these techniques are good--as for some people it will diminish the eroticism, and for some it will enhance it. While I'm not sure it's fair to compare Adamo with Andrew Blake for many reasons, since other people have seen fit to make the comparison, I'll throw in my thoughts on the subject. What I saw in Fever was a heavy handed directing style coupled with a few visual tricks, the result of which was a beautiful and visually aesthetic erotic experience. His style accentuates the beautiful human body as it engages in the act of hardcore sex, and I certainly appreciated that both in terms of arousal and intellect. Compared to Blake, however, Adamo is a rank amateur. Blake does the exact same thing, but to a much greater degree. He uses a much wider range of techniques and influences to create his overall effect, from visual stylistic choices, to powerful musical through lines, to unusual narrative constructions, all combined to create a definitively unique experience that can only characterized as "Andrew Blake". Blake's chosen medium is film rather than video, and as I have stated in the past, that makes direct comparison between him and Adamo very difficult. In terms of other production elements, I found Adamo's narrative construction laughable and intrusive, where as Blake's is as much a part of the eroticism as anything else is. Adamo's use of music is short sighted and it is simply used as a backdrop--although it is more interesting than most porn music out there. On the other hand, Blake's erotic and narrative use of music is unparalleled in hardcore history in my opinion, and only John Stagliano has been able to use music to comparable effect. For my favorite examples of this work, see Andrew Blake's Secrets and Night Trips II. In Adamo's defense, however, he offers a more accessible element to the sex that Blake doesn't allow you to feel--there is less art and more human passion in Adamo's work. The sex acts themselves are also a tad more hardcore than Blake is generally willing to offer. Beyond all this though, this was a competently produced feature with nice videography, excellent lighting and beautiful settings.

DVD QUALITY:
The video quality of this DVD was excellent, as is the case with most of Private's offerings. The real drawback was the sound. Although the music and the mix with performers voices was fine, I'm really not a fan of dubbed dialogue. The DVD offers a variety of options in terms of languages, and subtitles, but the particular combination that I most wanted to see wasn't there. I would much rather have seen the movie in its original language (in order to hear the actual performer's voices), with English subtitles. Although the original language was available (I believe it was Italian) it was also dubbed, and the English subtitles were nowhere to be found. To be fair though, I have seen much worse English dubbing in my time, and aside from the horrible script, the English dub didn't really bother me too much. In all, though, this is an excellently produced DVD, and worthy of Adamo's fine directing style and camera work.

EXTRAS:
There are a number of extras on this disc. First there is a photo gallery, which isn't bad as these things go, as they are higher quality photos than you often find in most DVD photo galleries. Next, there are several trailers. I love to see trailers; sometimes more so even than I like to see behind the scenes features. This isn't always the case, of course, but to be able to see DVD quality snippets of other videos I might like to see is a great extra on a DVD. The only trick is to keep the trailers current as titles are released. Since I'm not intimately familiar with Private's current video line, I can't say whether these are repeat trailers, but in any case, the trailers on the Fever disc included Fever itself, Private Life of Wanda Curtis, Love is in the Web, 3x1: Three Girls on one Guy, Private Reality 6, and Castings X 9. There are also some silly production notes (which basically just rehash the lame story line), and finally there's a "Report" which is Private's version of an E channel behind the scenes fluff piece. It's interesting only for some very brief behind the scenes images, but as with any mainstream fluff piece, I get very put off by the biased journalistic style of narration that basically tells me how to feel about the movie, and how great Adamo is. An interesting side note is that one scene was shot, but not included in the final cut of the movie. It apparently involved Toni Ribas and newcomer Stefania Danieli, but although touted in the "Report", it is nowhere to be found in the movie itself. OVERALL:
Ultimately, Adamo's (or Blake's for that matter) stylistic slant on hardcore sex is not going to be to everyone's liking. Fever offers gorgeous women and some pretty good-looking men getting it on together, and it is captured on video in a stylistic way that will either enhance your erotic experience, or distract from it. The sex here is not super hard, but there is some anal and some very brief DP along with a few facials. The story is laughable, poorly executed and might as well not have been included as it neither intrigues the viewer, nor enhances the sex as the behind the scenes "Report" extra would have you believe. The sex itself, on the other hand, is beautifully shot, and the lighting elements especially are much more thoroughly thought out and artistically delivered than in 90% of the other pornographic videos on the market--a real breath of fresh air. Couple that with a downright gorgeous cast who exhibit good energy and you've got yourself a pretty hot, if stylized, piece of smut. If you're looking for ass gaping, cum swallowing, deep throating sex, I would recommend that you steer clear of Fever like it's your most feared nightmare. If you like beautiful women and good production elements, and aren't necessarily looking for balls to the walls intensity, I would definitely recommend that you give this one a try. Antonio Adamo is no Andrew Blake, but if you've ever found Blake somewhat lifeless, Adamo takes a more human slant that might suite your tastes even better.
