The First Word: Kris Kramski, one of my favorite directors, is known for his creative and often edgy style. He brings his artistic vision to Hustler in Porno Vision. Does it represent porn for the new millennium or is it just some boring sex wrapped in his artistic vision? What's It About?: This movie, shot on film, is divided into six all-sex vignettes, each with a different theme. The unrelated scenes are free of dialogue, instead they rely on the photographic style to set up the sexual situation. The vignettes are named within the chapter selection menu, and don't always make sense: "Golden Bed" - The action starts straightaway as a blonde with nice tits starts sucking off two guys with pantyhose over their heads. It quickly turns anal, with one of the men fingering her ass before they take turns butt-fucking and then beating off onto her face. It's pretty easy to see why this scene is named golden: there's a distinct gold tint to the picture, there's a lot of body glitter in use, and the performers are wearing a lot of gold jewelry. The video is soft-focused, and at times, the only the focal point is clear while the rest of the frame is quite blurry. Disappointments: the girl is completely disinterested and has her eyes rolled up in her head most of the time; one of the guys is mostly limp; and the other one appears to have a bandage on his dick (concealing what I don't even want to know). "Look At Me Now" - This black and white scene features two women, one a European with a mohawk and the other an Asian with a crew cut. They take turns shaving each other's head bald using clippers and a straight razor before doing the same to their pussies. There's some pussy licking, including a nice gyno closeup, but in general, it's a really, really short sex scene. It abruptly ends with some gloved finger fucking -- no orgasm. Both of the women are distant, even icy, during the sex. "My Body" - Body paint is one of my fetishes, so I was looking forward to this scene. A blonde with great tits and a butch haircut (the covergirl) is matched up with a guy and gal who are both covered with blue body paint. After some erotic foreplay and BJ, the fucking takes two forms. First, a spoon position, where the blue girl does pussy-to-mouth as the blonde stares into the camera. Then there's a vaginal piledriver, which doesn't look that appealing because the guy is almost completely limp. Fortunately, it ends well, with a top notch pop shot over the blonde's spread pussy and the blue girl's face. "Embrace Me" - One of the prominent images from the trailers for Porno Vision is a skinny girl with long, curly hair who's been covered with baby oil. While I don't care for the "let's put baby oil on her entire body and spray her down with water to make her look like she's covered with sweat" look, it's a pretty good solo masturbation scene. In addition to a killer finger fucking shot, she uses some pussy balls and a silver vibe. It's really evident how small this girl is when you see how big a normal vibrator looks in her hand. "Kiss Me" - This is a standard boy-girl scene, with occasional black and white footage that shows how the girl, a busty raven-haired Eurobabe, goes from arriving at the set to getting her makeup done in preparation for the shoot. Other than a nice open doggy position, it's a pretty forgettable scene. "It's Only Sex" - The movie wraps up with a girl-girl scene that uses strap-ons. Strap-ons really do nothing for me, especially when they give a plastic cock a blowjob (really, what's the point in that?!?). They make sure to leave a lot of lipstick on the fake cock, which probably will have lipstick fetishists in heaven, but I could care less. Overall, it's not a very interesting scene and is quite short -- not a very good way to end Porno Vision. What I liked: No fake tits: It's a little over the top to go out of your way to tell the viewer before the movie starts that there are no artificial knockers, but it's still nice to see almost perfect, unspoiled examples of the female breast. Then again, it's a rarity to see a cosmetically enhanced Eurobabe. It just goes to show you how much American porn relies on gravity-defying talent when there's tons of Eastern European girls who would be voted Homecoming queens if they had been born here. Erotic Imagery: Andrew Blake uses elegant settings for his erotic vision, but Kris Kramski likes to use outrageous situations and art direction for his. So anal finger fucking from a guy wearing pantyhose over his face, chicks shaving each other bald, and blue people having sex are par for the course. And for the most part, it works -- not as well as in some of his movies, but this is pretty close to what classic Kramski is all about. What I didn't like: Micro-scenes: At an average of 12 minutes per scene, there isn't much time for warm-up or orgasm, so in most cases the sex starts quickly and ends abruptly. I was disappointed to see that the scenes involving women only didn't have even an attempt to show an orgasm. I would have rather seen four solid, full-length scenes instead of these "teaser" segments. Distant women: I don't know why these artistic pornos have to have the distant, icy, stoic girls. I'm not interested in seeing a runway model get fucked. I think there's a middle ground between porn on a pedestal and gonzo -- Porno Vision is firmly rooted in the unattainable. Maybe it's the European talent Kramski used or maybe it's the eye contact with the camera, but whatever it is, I was turned off. That's a shame because the women are fairly attractive and have great, natural bodies. Hello? Credits?: No one seems to have a cast list for this DVD. It sure would have been nice for Kramski to credit his performers in the opening or ending credits or for Hustler to include a cast list or scene breakdown on the DVD. Other than giving the talent the credit they deserve, it's always better to have a name rather than having to refer to someone as "the girl" in reviews. DVD Extras: This is a fairly bare-bones release but pretty typical for Hustler: some trailers and a photo gallery. These days, that would qualify this title as "no frills." I definitely would have loved to see an interview with Kramski or some sort of behind the scenes featurette. And as I mentioned, even the inclusion of a cast list would have been a huge value-add. A/V Quality: From the moment the very first frame appeared on my TV, I knew that this was going to be one of those DVDs with A/V issues. And it's pretty bad with that first frame was a completely black image; if you see blocky compression artifacts on a simple dark frame, it does not bode well for the rest of the movie. Fortunately, the artifacts seem to go away once the picture fades in. But we're still not out of the woods: there's a whole bunch of pinholes, film scratches, and dirt from the original film print, and the transfer to video has introduced some minor, yet visible frame jitter in places. I like the widescreen presentation, and the audio is pretty good -- dominated by the techno music soundtrack and dubbed moaning. The Last Word: So it's pretty clear that Porno Vision is not a revolutionary movie, nor is it one of Kramski's better creations. Just like many other directors in his genre (such as Ninn, Blake, Grant, or Mond), he's missing some things that would take it to the next level. In this case, the sex is definitely edgy and the situations are creative, but the couplings lack chemistry and the overall execution is half-assed. What we, the viewers, end up getting is not cutting-edge porn, but instead just a few hot snippets and lot of wondering "what if?"
