Perfect Smiles Review

Porn Historian Jim Holliday attaches his name to yet another all-star, wall-to-wall sex release from VCA in the heavily-promoted "Perfect Smiles" DVD. When it comes to his videos, you definitely get your bang for the buck with a roster of current adult superstars and quality production. This DVD is loaded with supplementary material including a "Behind The Scenes" featurette, interviews, and other extras, all of which are a nice and thoughtful touch. Featuring top talent like Tiffany Mynx, Jill Kelly, Shayla LaVeux, Felicia and many up and comers, there is no doubt that Jim Holliday and VCA do not cheat on giving the consumer what they want on a little silver platter.

However, as the old adage goes, quantity does not mean quality. The problem with this feature is that Jim Holliday directs it with almost no imagination whatsoever. The sex scenes are straightforward, well-shot and well-composed, but boring. With the exception of a Tiffany Mynx and Jill Kelly girl-girl scene (which succeeds largely due to Mynx's always enthusiastic performance), I had a hard time distinguishing one scene from another. With such a large cast, you would think that there would be multiple combinations of different performers, threesomes, foursomes, and all kinds of imaginative pairings at work...but the movie does not deliver. There is a final all-girl orgy scene featuring most of the cast, but again, Mr. Holliday does nothing special with it, and the camera work is clumsy as hell, focusing on motionless body parts and with too many sustained close-ups.

In terms of style and creativity, this movie is almost indistinguishable from other Holliday works including "Eye Candy," "Sorority Sex Kittens 3" (which is by far a better movie) and "Car Wash Angels." The sameness gets awfully monotonous, and what you are left with are highly competent sex scenes, but with only lukewarm passion.

On an ironic note, I must point out what I thought was one of the better scenes in the video was a straight guy-girl scene with the very cute Charmane, which was featured on this DVD as a deleted scene. Amidst all the peroxide blondes found throughout this feature, I found the presence of Charmane to be a nice change of pace (Sydnee Steele is another brunette who looks great and has a pretty good ending scene in yet another straight fuck and suck).

I guess it just goes to show the misguided judgment of Holliday when he chooses delete this very good scene among all the other mediocre ones.

This is the third VCA release with the multiple angles features, and sadly, VCA does no better job using this gimmick than its competitor, Vivid Video. The little camera icon on the bottom right of the screen is distracting (though not as annoying as Vivid's bright blue logo) and ultimately useless. I think that viewers have better things to do with their hands than full around with the multiple angles button on their remote.

The "Behind the Scenes" footage shows action which was clearly intended for the inevitable sequel, and shows Tiffany Mynx doing a reverse cowgirl anal with complete abandon. However, I have trepidations about a sequel after reviewing this production.

Finally, the biggest complaint I have with this and all current VCA movies is on a more controversial issue: the use of condoms. I respect and understand the policy behind their use and the health and safety concerns involved, but to me, they have a negative erotic effect on almost every scene. Seeing a white latex raincoat separating the skin to skin penetration shots ruin the fantasy..it's like seeing wires support Superman in flight.

Finally, the facial cumshot has literally been a climax to most straight sex scenes, raising the raunchiness to its highest peak. When the viewer knows that there will be no shot to the mouth or face at the end of any given coupling, then there really is no climax (I am assuming that nobody finds anything particularly appealing about seeing a guy spill his seed on the actress' stomach or backside). Thus, even with the numerous sex scenes in this movie, the presence of condoms rear their ugly rubbered head and diminishes the heat. All the more reason why sex scenes should be more more energetic and creative in order to counter the negative impact of condoms (for instance, witness the incredible performance by Alexandria Silk in her terrific scene in VCA's soon-to-be-reviewed "Bride on the Run." Despite the condom, this scene is hotter and sexier than any scene in "Perfect Smiles" because of Ms. Silk's enthusiasm).

"Perfect Smiles" is perfectly average.
