Review:
Let's talk about Pam and Tommy Lee: Hardcore and Uncensored. It's awful...and rightfully so, as it was never meant to be seen by the general public. Stolen from Pamela Anderson's and Tommy Lee's home back in the 90's, it made its scandalous way onto the nascent internet and, ultimately, was widely distributed on VHS, etc. ... causing quite the (overhyped) stir along the way. Unlike many (most? all?) of the "leaked" celebrity sex tapes that followed, this one was the real deal...and it shows. It's effectively a number of short home videos of Lee and Anderson with grainy footage of things like their home life, their relationship, their dogs, their vacations, their wedding, and Pamela's birthday celebration. In a couple of spots, they get frisky and get down to business, and there's some short (poorly captured) oral and vaginal sex upon a rented yacht, some road head en route to go camping, etc. (It's also true what they say about the size of Tommy's cock, by the way...) None of this is really worth watching, however, and none of it is honestly worth invading someone's privacy over. Viewing it at all is more than a little "cringe" (...as the youngsters like to say.)
Why revisit it and write this up now, then? Well, in case you've been living under a rock, Hulu has a new mainstream series, Pam and Tommy, that's chosen to dig up the entire, sordid incident for the basis of its storyline, casting a number of big Hollywood names in key roles. This evening, my wife and I watched the "sex tape" first and followed it up with the first three episodes of the show, which itself is (intentionally) zany and over the top (...perhaps too much so.)
And...this is where the true "strength"--if one can call it that--of the source material by the real Lee and Anderson lies. It puts the show in context, allows for some mild fact-checking (scenarios, settings, personalities), and (arguably) makes it more interesting. Whether that's enough to make it worth a look (also arguable) will be up to the individual viewer. Just don't come into it looking for anything remotely spectacular (or even "hot", for that matter, as the past hype or current show may lead one to believe) and also don't come into it looking to be satisfied as a fan of the Crue, either. (Netflix's "The Dirt" is far better for the latter...and, despite being "R"-level material, far more outrageous and entertaining.)
My recommendation, unless you really get into the show on Hulu: Hard pass.
