Nymph Review

Overview

The concept behind Nymph would make a decent or even good movie, but this is not that movie. If you want to take the story seriously, you will find out that Chasey Lain and Vince Vouyer are not the actors to pull this story off, and you will not be thrilled to note that the special effects are limited to a few lame double exposures. On the other hand, if you watch it for the sex, you get the usual lukewarm Vivid movie with bad camera angles and editing, courtesy of Ralph Parfait. On the positive side, there seems to be at least some attention to set design, and you can see a few ordinary-looking people who have non- sex roles, which has become a rare thing in porn productions.

I think I would have enjoyed the movie more if it had been done as a softcore movie - you know, one of those things with less sex and more plot - and with real actors, provided the script had been developed more and the movie had either a decent budget, or a resourceful director/crew.

As a DVD transfer, the movie looks and sounds older than it is (according to the statement in the beginning it was made in 1995). The picture is soft and noisy, and the audio is dull and lacks dynamic range. The other Vivid movies I have seen have generally looked better. I had the vague impression of watching a much older movie, one from the 70's or 80's. (This impression might also be caused by the plot and certain stock characters like the nice but world-weary doorman). I don't know if the video quality is a result of a bad film transfer, although that was the first explanation that came to mind.

The music in the movie is generally well done and appropriate to the scenes, if not exactly memorable.

The story

Vince Vouyer plays Nick, an architect who moves into an interesting old apartment building in LA, not knowing that there is a water nymph (Chasey Lain) living in a spring under the building. Whenever one of the tenants take a shower, the nymph emerges from thin air to ravish the tenant, leaving him satisfied and without any memory of what happened; not a bad arrangement, and certainly enough to explain the smiling and whistling tenants Vince meets when he arrives. Joe the doorman informs him without prompting that the house is haunted, but by a friendly spirit. There is also a rather clumsy example of foreshadowing, when the doorman tells him about the sprinkler system.

When Nick's sister Valerie (Kirsty Waay - not one of my favorite names) drops by, looking like a character from an 80's porn flick with her big hairdo, she is snatched into the bathroom where a couple of nymphets give her a dose of sexual magic (oddly with the aid of a dildo).

Just as Nick has made himself at home, he finds out that the building is going to be torn down. He makes some phone calls in an attempt to save the building, and earns the gratitude of Daphne the nymph (Chasey), who reveals herself to him when he is about to take a shower. Being the romantic type, he falls in love with her, which means that certain rituals - a candlelight dinner - have to be observed, before they get physical.

Daphne tells him she once was a human, an Indian girl who was changed to a nymph by the "Sky Father", because a white settler tried to rape her. Frankly, I do not see how that explains her promiscuity in her current state, but never mind that. Perhaps it is a side effect of being a nymph.

Anyway, with Daphne in the equation, the plan to save the building - and her - now involves using her sexual charms to turn the heads of certain people from the landmarks commission (Jill Kelly and Tom Byron), and failing that, to "whammy" the owners to sell the deed of ownership to the tenants. This idea does not seem to bother Nick too much, although he is agonized with jealousy when he realizes that, thanks to her ability to be in many places (and many bodies) at the same time, she has been fucking everyone in the building for the last 100 years, and continues to do so even while engaged in conversation with him. This prompts him to explain his notion of romantic love to her by quoting Shakespeare in a characteristically sappy scene.

Predictably, after an orgy scene, all ends well, and even Daphne returns to human form, presumably to live happily ever after with Nick.

The sex

I am not going to describe the scenes in much detail. The sex is usually vanilla, and Chasey in particular does not do anything too nasty. I remember one facial, on Jill Kelly in scene 5.

Scene 1: Chasey Lain screws Bobby Vitale in the bathroom, with the shower running. He wears a condom. Later, Chasey passes her hand over his eyes and says the word "forget". She materializes behind two other guys and does the "forget" spell to them, as well.

Scene 2: This consists of Chasey spying on on Vince while he works on his abs and studies architectural drawings and the like. She sits on the toilet seat with her legs spread and masturbates, with closeups of her pussy. He appears not to notice her. I found this surprisingly erotic.

Scene 3: Dorian Grant and Kitty Monroe grab Kirsty Waay into the bathroom. Cut to a lesbian daisy chain. Cut to one woman giving head to another while the third sits alone and masturbates. Cut to a strap-on dildo being inserted in Kirsty Waay's anus. Cut... Cut... You know the style.

Scene 4: Vince Vouyer and Chasey Lain in the bedroom. Buckets of water on the table prevent Chasey the nymph "magically" from drying out. A condom is used.

Scene 5: Jill Kelly, Tom Byron, and Chasey Lain. When Vinnie's negotiation fails, he turns on the water, and Chasey appears. Cut straight to the action with both women playing with seated Tommy's cock and balls. This scene is not bad, it includes rimming, Chasey gets a pounding from Tommy and seems to like it, and a strap-on dildo finds its way to the proceedings. Oddly Chasey is wearing heels at the end of the scene, although she originally appears totally nude. Tommy wears a condom when screwing Chasey, and goes bare when screwing Jill.

Scene 6: Mainly Alex Sanders with Kitty Monroe, and TT Boy with Tracy Love, with short glimpses of Vinnie and Chasey. The sprinklers have activated, and there are several nymphs (or are these separate manifestations of the same nymph?) screwing everyone in the lobby. Actually, this is not much of an orgy scene. Both Tracy Love and Kitty Monroe have some anal action going.

Conclusion

Raincoaters will avoid Vivid movies anyway, but with the online prices typically well under $10, this is not necessary a bad choice for people looking for plain vanilla porn with a plot or something with a hint of romance - although the romance is not handled very well. Fans of Chasey Lain will have already snatched this up. Certainly Chasey has a beautiful face, and she is the focus of this movie. I find her somewhat top- heavy, though. The other females have less prominent roles - Jill Kelly looks nice and businesslike, and Kitty Monroe with her nose ring has somewhat waifish good looks. The set design, clothing and the like is actually pretty good by current porn standards. The acting is what you would expect - Chasey is a little too giggly and airheaded for a character who must be at least a couple of centuries old.

The sex scenes suffer from unflattering angles, and the editing sometimes makes it hard to keep track of what is going on. That seems to be the rule with Vivid features lensed by Ralph Parfait.

The picture looks pretty rough, which could be caused by a botched film transfer.
