Review:
It's the early 1970s, a time of political, social, and sexual change and unrest, when the new, the old, and everything in between is clashing, and only one Presidential candidate, the uber-popular sex star, Linda Lovelace, can unite the various factions of the country and bring peace and harmony to the land. Such is the case in "Linda Lovelace for President", a decent, 1973 release from Gourmet Video. First off, it should be stated upfront what this film is not--and that's a porno. While Lovelace was an adult star, one of the biggest ever in fact, this release is decidedly softcore and would likely even grab an R-rating in a modern-day context. Of course, there's some T & A, a bit of the beaver, and some simulated sex, but--otherwise--there's not much else going on in the boinking department. So, one might then ask what exactly the film is. The answer? It's a cheesy commentary on its times that relies upon the absurdity of a porn star running for the highest office of the land, purposefully ludicrous humor, and base, wide-ranging stereotypes (which abound) to poke fun at just about every aspect of its era. It's in this mission that it largely succeeds and that a modern audience, albeit a very limited one, will find some value. Of interesting, though certainly tangential, contemporary relevance--and in a seemingly improbable manner--the premise of this film isn't actually that much more outlandish than some of what has (and continues to) transpire in the current races for the Presidential nominations this particular election cycle (2016)...but that's a story for a different site. So...for super-fans of Ms. Lovelace, this one is probably worth a look, as it is for those interested in an uncensored and raw look at the turbulent times that were its era. For everyone else, it will hold little or no value, and it's an easy pass.
