The Movie

A new volume of Kelly the Coed and a new Kelly again. This time Katie Morgan takes on the titular character. She seems to try too hard for her role, over pushing the ditzy blonde Kelly to the extreme, which gets old rather fast. In this entry, Kelly is still a sophomore and it is finals week; but since this is the Pi Pi sorority, drinking and fucking are more important than studying.

Like the last entry, any pretense of trying to make this an actual feature movie has been thrown out the window. The movie is plotless barely even qualifying for a vignette label. The last entry went to using poorly and hastily assembled sets which has not been continued in this volume. Jim Powers has gone back to using locations.

Sadly though, in 14 volumes no one has explained the Greek letter system to Powers. Nor are they bothering to explain to him when his set-up makes no sense. When he shows us the Delta fraternity house, he shows us an image of the Beta Omega Phi house. The interior room he uses for the scene in the house is empty except for a couch and the giant Beta Omega Phi letters propped up behind the couch, which looks rather silly with his actors sitting on the couch wearing shirts that say Delta on them.

This isn't the only instance in the movie where what Powers uses for his shooting locations makes no actual sense. He also has located the film department for the university within the Norman Topping Student Activity Center. These mistakes give the impression that Powers just shoots as he goes along with no real regard for the end product. Planning in how these scenes would be shot would have gone a long way. By changing the angle for the activity center and the frame he could have cut the inappropriate name. And he should have thought out the Beta Omega Phi house much more.

Then again Powers doesn't seem to respect the viewer very much with his set-ups either. For instance, he has Kelly and Jennifer (Jennifer Gold) studying at Professor English's (Ben English) kitchen table. Powers has never really been respectful of his audience when creating the set-ups for this series in general though going for every porn cliché possible never once actually trying to make a plausible situation.

The sex scenes are held together, like in previous volumes, with narration between the scenes that string them along. In the past most of the attempt at a plot has lain within this narration. Now the narration just meanders from one ridiculously thought out scenario to the next. As per his usual, Powers pumps in cheesy porn music over the sex scenes and has filled the movie with poorly framed shots. Powers did attempt to show a little creativity this time around with double imagery in the lead to one scene, but ultimately it wasn't very effective.

The Edition

Heatwave has done an adequate job with this release. Most viewers probably won't be overly disappointed with the release nor will they be overly excited. Kelly the Co-ed 14: Finals Week is presented in the full screen aspect ratio of approximately 1.33:1. The colors look good and rather faithfully represented. There are glitches in the video, but they are minor. The limitations of the source video masters are visible.

Kelly the Co-ed 14: Finals Week is presented with an English Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo track, which sounds like it is actually a monaural track pushed to both front speakers. The dialog is clear and can be easily heard except when Powers has pumped music over it. The narration is free of the echo that sometimes plagues it.

Heatwave has skimped rather heavily on the special features. There are multiple angles, two of them, for some of the sex scenes but not all of them. There is an interviews piece, which runs for 30 minutes, and features some rather painful interviews followed by masturbation. There is also a photo gallery included on the disc.

Final Thoughts

Kelly the Co-ed 14: Finals Week brings us yet another volume in the unending Kelly the Coed series with another new Kelly but no new ideas. If you have loved the rest of the series, this one is sure to please you as well. However, for most, this should be an easy title to skip. Heatwave has done an acceptable job with the release.
