The Little Details
Running Time: 54 min.
Production Date: 2001
Director: Shinichi Shimizu
Cast: Animated
The Short Story
Initial Expectations: I wasn’t sure what to expect here as anime has been very hit or miss for me.
Initial Reaction: It starts off pretty good, but ends up as a turn-off.
Who Should Watch It : Anybody wanting something very different from the usual porn found in the United States
Who Should Avoid It: Anybody wanting all consensual sex
The Technical Stuff
Audio /Video Quality: The dubbing is very clear and sounds as good as most cartoons out there. The video is extremely clear, but the animation is fairly primitive. It’s about half way between Pokemon and the lower end of cartoons from the late sixties. There’s some motion, but many times it’s extremely limited.
Music: The music is pretty typical for animation, and very nicely balanced with the rest of the audio.
Menus: The main menu is nicely animated and gives a very good first impression. The chapter menu lets you choose a scene based on a small clip of each scene and a title for it.
The Feature
The Kamyla Box Set includes Kamyla 1 and Kamyla 2. As I’ve already reviewed those elsewhere, I’m going to cover some of the general points and trends here and leave out most of the specific details.Kamyla revolves around Agatha, who’s part of a three girl task force who goes after dealers of the drug Kamyla. Kamyla is used to turn girls into sex slaves and has become a common drug in the future where this takes place. While attempting to bring in Lead Suits, one of Kamyla’s top dealers, Agatha is captured and injected with the drug. She tries to resist it, but it slowly takes her over more and more. She doesn’t tell the rest of her team, but is determined to fight off the drug as well as bring Lead Suits to justice.
The sex in Kamyla is mixed, but all of it is non-consensual to some point. With the exception of one scene, which is a straight out rape scene, all of the scenes take place with the girls being drugged. This makes things a bit interesting. At first the girls, especially Agatha, fights the drug and you can see that their body just isn’t answering them. As the story progresses, you see the girls gradually give in as they’re unable to control their body but also not quite sure they want to. It makes things a little interesting at times, but never completely comfortable.
Kamyla is a very different series, and one that I think will be very hit or miss for people. It’s dark and revolves around an idea that’s never shown in American porn. The story starts out with an interesting idea, but rather than exploring that, it decides to use it to show the destruction of a woman’s will. That doesn’t do anything for me, and makes me wish I would have picked up something else.
To me, box sets like Kamyla make NuTech look like a moneygrubbing company who wants to milk porn fans for every dollar they can get from them rather than putting out a product that anime fans would feel proud to pick up . While NuTech puts out sets like this, companies like A18 / Central Park and Kitty are putting out entire series on one DVD, such as Night Shift Nurses and Slight Fever Syndrome. If that’s not enough, you can pick up the DVDs from A18 / Central Park and Kitty that have the entire series on them for just a few bucks more than you could pick up one of NuTech’s Kamyla DVDs that don’t even last a half hour, and they look just as good, have as many or more extras, and run at least as long as Kamyla does as a whole.
Sadly, from what I understand of authoring costs, NuTech could have authored both episodes onto one DVD for the same price as authoring just one episode on a DVD. I’ve heard from a couple places the NuTech all but stole the rights to these features, so they don’t have a lot of money into developing them. Cutting their processing and shipping costs by a quarter, as well as reducing the amount of stock and products they’d have to handle, should make putting out a DVD with an entire series like this much more affordable for people, while probably letting NuTech make just as much money on it. Yes, I knew what I was getting into when I bought this set, but that doesn’t mean that I don’t feel a bit ripped off. That’s not a feeling any company should be proud of leaving their customer with, but from what appears to be much of the thought behind their box sets, I just don’t think NuTech gives a damn.
The Extra Stuff
A photo gallery lasts about two minutes with six seconds per nice looking full screen photo. There’s also weblinks and trailers for most of NuTech’s animated releases. The Down -n- Dirty Sex Stuff
Themes: Straight, non-consensual sex, drugs, masturbation, toe-ing, toys, group, and DP
Raincoat Factor: Medium
Condom Usage: None as it’s animated
The Bottom Line:
Currently, the Kamyla box set can be found online for between $22 and $40 with a couple stores offering it at the low end. Don’t even think of paying that much for this set. The movie is disappointing and extremely short. Although there aren’t any extras, the transfer does appear to be well done.Note to NuTech: Releasing these two parts as separate releases as well as a box set seems greedy and stupid. You have room for almost twice what it would take to do that on a DVD-5, which your competition would have done for roughly the same price as just one of your DVDs.
