All my old movies mags state that “Johnny Wadd” is to John Homes as James Bond is to Shawn Connery, but for years I have never been able to verify this analogy. Over the last several months, VCX has been re-releasing movie after movie from its vault of Golden Age classics. I eagerly unwrapped the plastic and shoved it into my player and…came away with mixed feelings. On the surface, “Johnny Wadd” attempts to be the film noir of the porn genre and I imagine that back in the early 1970’s it may have been. The dialogue is campy but entertaining and the music is above average even by today’s standards. John Holmes is actually a pretty decent actor as well. The sex itself was pretty good for all but one scene, but the intangibles were lacking for me. Four out of the five scenes take place in the same room, actually, on the same couch with John Homes being the male participant in all of them. With a running time of only 70 minutes, you can imagine how short the actual sex is. The video quality was average for movies of that period. The best part of the movie was the extras. You get two full movies, “Pizza Girls” and “Prisoners of Paradise” which are from the same period of film making and which I don’t think are available on DVD. Even though they were in WMV format, watching Seke (dressed as a Nazi soldier) force John to fuck her at gun point to the music of Wagner was worth the price of the disk it self.
In the end, a must have for fans of the Golden Age. However, porn newbie’s who like their High Definition, DP’s, and other circus acts might was well stay away.
