Running Time: 44 min.
Production Date: 1994
Director: Kanenari Tokiwa
Cast: Anime
Initial Expectations: After reading reviewer’s review I’m not expecting too much.
Initial Reaction: There are some good ideas here, but I think it could have been done differently a lot better (say without the gang rapes).
Who Should Watch It : Sci-fi porno fans.
Who Should Avoid It: Anybody who enjoys watching completely consensual sex.
Audio /Video Quality: It looks and sounds very good.
Music: The music has a definite eastern feel to it and matches a lot of the feature.
Disc Problems: BEWARE of this DVD! Many of them are missing the English language subtitle. This is okay if you speak Japanese, but I can’t say that I know anybody who does. To my knowledge, all of the Imma Youj0 Box Sets contain the defective DVD. I’m going to break from my normal rule of not mentioning a specific e-tailer here. I received the Imma Youja Box Set for review and had the bad DVD. Since NuTech is well known for poor customer service I contacted Five Star DVD who sent me a replacement copy so I could give a full review on the box set. Thanks a lot guys!
Menus: The menus are very basic and a little annoying.
The Feature: Imma Youjo: What the Wise Stranger Fears starts with a bang. Several of them, in fact. One might even call it pillaging if they saw more than the town just being shelled. As any student of history knows, the pillaging is normally followed by the raping, which is sadly also shown. Through it all we see Chaos as he spots Maya and follows her. It appears to be a flash to the future, but one can’t be sure.
After the opening credits, we follow Maya, a homeless girl, and see her gang raped. Some of the gang make comments that make it sound like she might be into it, but none of the actions appear that way. As soon as they finish, another group starts in on her and combine to form a multi-penised creature who also forces himself on her. Thankfully, at least some of this was a dream. Maya wakes in a bed and finds out she was bought to serve as a prostitute. Her first client is Chaos, an adversary from the past who thinks something is going on at the tower she now works at. He pumps Maya for information as well as just pumping her while he tells her many of his suspicions about the tower as well as the town where it’s located. Later Maya finds out some of what he was talking about when she learns that it’s her turn to have some time with the master. She’s escorted back and finds that maybe her dreams weren’t just dreams as she’s raped once again.
As the story progresses, things progress between Maya and Chaos. Although they aren’t in love, it is more than just business and Chaos learns that the master is behind the drug that everybody in town is addicted to. Since it’s also porn, Maya’s learning to really get into her job and has even grown to enjoy her trips to the master. She has become the master’s favorite as well as everybody else we’ve seen. Chaos is determined to escape with Maya, but the master and his head servant aren’t willing to let her go that easily. The ending is one that Tarantino would be proud of if he liked porn and monsters with many tentacle-like penises.
I’m not quite sure what I think about Imma Youjo: What the Wise Stranger Fears . I really like a lot of it. Once it gets started, the plot is really interesting and does have a decent twist or two. Sadly, the sex really brings it down. Maybe ten percent of the sex is fairly normal. There are a couple nice scenes between Chaos and Maya, but the rest of them are between Maya and the monster or are gang rape scenes. I’m sorry (actually, no I’m not), but gang rapes just aren’t my bag baby. Even the scenes between Maya and Chaos, although done well, have him hiring her as a prostitute. I’d seriously wonder about anybody who really got into the sex in this feature. If you’re a fan of authors like William Gibson this might be for you, but sexually it leaves a lot to be desired.
Extras: The photo gallery lasts about a minute, but seemed cut off. (In his review, reviewer said it lasted about two minutes). On the plus side, I thought it looked very good. There’s also company info, a new release website link, and subtitle control.
The second side of the DVD contains trailers for the Cool Devices series, the La Blue Girl series, Twin Angels , and Venus 5 . It’s a nice format. The first screen tells you about the feature and you can choose whether you want to view the trailer or not.
Themes: Anime, straight, gang bang, rape, B&D, prostitution, and monster / human sex
Raincoat Factor: Medium low, unless you enjoy rape
Overall: Currently, Imma Youjo Volume 1: What the Wise Stranger Fears can be found online for between $13 and $25 with a few stores offering it for under $15. There’s an interesting idea here but some of it is handled quite tastelessly. The transfer appears to be very good but there isn’t much for extras.
Note to NuTech: Please pay a little more attention to your quality control. Sending out technically bad DVDs to reviewers isn’t a good way to get on their good side. Also, this appears like it would be a lot better value if there were more than one episode per DVD.
