Girls Of Wrestling Review

Down on her luck big league wrestler Layla is given an opportunity for redemption when her friend Nina asks her to train some young, up and comer grapplers.

For this review, I’m going to focus on the film as a whole instead of the sex scenes. I will begin with what I think is some terrific acting from Ariel X (the star of the film), Nina Hartley (in a non-sex role) and Sinn Sage. Believable, first rate acting here, Ariel and Sinn also have a good sexual chemistry that is evident when they finally hook up at the end. There’s a sweltering amount of passion and eroticism, Ariel goes to town lapping up her protégé Sinn. It’s feature level lesbian sex, done with a fair amount of strokability. They carry this film, along with Nina, the real highlights of this two hour film.

Girls of Wrestling, inspired by a current streaming network show, has been a highly anticipated release since the spring, with its cast of high level A list performers. It’s the kind of film made for awards consideration, and an expectation it will be a hit with critics. The problem with most porn films made with awards consideration/critical acclaim in mind is, directors spend more time developing the film that the sex suffers. Two out of the four sex scenes in GOW seem to be just thrown in for porn’s sake, very heavily choreographed, lacking passion, sexual energy, and inorganic. Cadence Lux and Kenna James are up first and there’s just no foreplay or seducing. The leg massage that leads to the sex lacks any real heat and the standard dark lighting is back, and not working any magic on any level. Karla Kush, who has a thing for the cute reporter played by Charlotte Stokely, has better chemistry with Charlotte but the scene also doesn’t have any kind of real flirtatious buildup. You know from when they first meet earlier in the film they’ll be hooking up but when it happens the sparks are lacking. To me it feels as though more thought went into casting the right people in perspective roles, but chemistry was overlooked. This film is not a porn you can jerk it too. Yes, there are beautiful women and there is sex, but it just seemed that sex was an afterthought. Once that happens, an adult film ceases becoming porno. It just becomes a passion project, with sex added in to qualify it as porn. For hardcore lesbian porn fans and raincoaters, this film wasn’t made with you in mind.

The script, where Ariel X’ character is arrested for DUI and is in need of straightening out her life is just not an original plot but she, Nina and Sinn do an excellent job acting-wise with what they’re given. Ariel is given a chance to train amateur wrestlers for a big event and when the time comes, there’s no audience present. Not a single extra. Charlotte Stokely suddenly goes from being a reporter to ringside commentator, using the most overused sports clichés. Charlotte, who is a top tier performer and actress, just seems uncomfortable with the dialogue, and her talents are very wasted in the film. The four way orgy between Ana Foxxx, Aiden Ashley, Whitney Wright and Brandie Mae is a pleasant surprise, occurring unexpectedly and is a hard scene with plenty of oral action being done on all holes, but eventually it goes on long to the point it drags. Going back to the main event the wrestling scenes are not very well edited and several of the performers just don’t look convincing executing some complicated moves. Even the referee looks like he’s merely going through the motions, just reciting the dialogue he had been given and not being a commanding presence in the ring. Again, Ariel and Sinn make it look effortlessly, their match being very well choreographed and edited, and just as exciting as any real life pro wrestling matchup. Their commitment to their roles is clearly evident here. This leads to the best sex scene in the film, which we had to wait almost two hours to see.

My review likely will be the only negative review among critics. As I mentioned before, this film was made for awards consideration and critical acclaim, which it will receive since most adult critics won’t openly point out the negatives in these highly anticipated releases. But to put it simply, I was expecting to watch a porno, not a film with sex scenes just thrown in. I enjoyed every moment Ariel, Nina and Sinn were on film, and their performances deserve acting accolades. But the rest of the film just takes itself so seriously. Even the show that inspired this film, which also takes itself too seriously at times, has plenty of humor in it. Girls of Wrestling has not one moment of humor. A mix of drama and humor, casting performers with real sexual chemistry and athletic ability that can actually execute the moves seen here, getting rid of the overuse of dark lighting, and more of an original story, plus most importantly, hot sex, would have made this film worth recommending. As it stands, I can’t recommend this title to the readers of this site.
