PREFACE:
John "Buttman" Stagliano is one of the most highly respected figures in the porn industry, both by fans and colleagues alike. He's responsible for gathering a stable of some of the most celebrated and decorated pornographic directors ever assembled under one banner, counting himself among them. His company, Evil Angel, actively recognizes that its fans are its most valuable resource, and continually endeavors to improve itself based on the feedback of the consumer. These things are considered facts among most educated porn fans. Stagliano himself has directed over one hundred movies, both videos and films and has made his name with a talent for tease, a fascination with butts, and a gift for shooting great sex with enthusiastic performers. Above all, when Stagliano directs a movie, he never forgets that the primary reason porn fans watch it is for the sex. Evil Angel specializes in very hard sex, especially in the last few years, and Stagliano has certainly been on the softer end of the Evil Angel spectrum. With The Fashionistas, however, I hypothesize that we're about to experience a heretofore unseen "Buttman". Allow me to present...

INTRODUCTION:
Exhibit A: Quoth the director--"This is a...high budget film with...cutting edge, full length, very hard sex scenes. There are also several full on S&M scenes with very real action. ...this is by far my most ambitious project. It is a highly charged erotic experience, not intended for the novice porno viewer." Such is the description, or should I say warning, on the back of The Fashionistas digipack DVD package. That quote, accompanied by the knowledge that Rocco Siffredi will be gracing us with his hard core presence, along with box cover exhibits B, and C (see right) lead me to hypothesize that we are not about to watch just another Buttman feature. The real clincher, though, is exhibit D: "BELLADONNA, a woman with the most incredible sexual abilities I've ever seen...". Anyone who has any inkling of who Belladonna is should begin to contemplate the true meaning of that quote. Let me just pre-emptively state, for the benefit of the hapless Vivid loving porn fan who has stumbled onto this review by mistake, "DANGER, Will Robinson, DANGER!!" After offering these gentle words of warning to my wife, she is a little trepidatious, but finds herself intrigued by the possibilities. I, however, am a-quiver with anticipation!!! Now that the first disc of this 4 hour and 40 minute marathon is in the DVD player--let us consider exhibit E...

Title Sequence: The film starts with some music playing over the Evil Angel logo. As the credits appear before our eyes, a fashion show is revealed. Various models parade down the runway dressed in some nice looking, but fairly average fashion garb. Suddenly a gang of women dressed in varying forms of latex make a run on the stage and start ripping the clothes off the fashion models. The leader of these rabble-rousers is played by Taylor St. Claire, looking quite nummy in a blue and black latex outfit of her own. Panic ensues, with people of clear authority yelling, "get off the stage" but the ladies do not submit to these demands. Instead they start posing and showing off their own clothing--most of which brandishes a stylized letter "F". The photographers present are all too happy to document the event, and after one of the old models unwittingly finds herself on the runway among the new regime, she is quickly stripped and thrown off the stage. After this, something very odd happens. The TV image freezes. After a couple seconds in frozen silence, the image moves again, but this time in slow motion reverse. The model engaged in the act of being thrown off the stage is moving back in time in slow motion. An out of place frame that we don't have time to scrutinize flashes before our eyes, and again the action freezes. Then step by step the frames move forward until we are greeted with an astonishing image...

Antonio escorts everyone out of his hotel room. In the hall, he sees a woman (Kate Frost) wearing a gray latex full body suit picking up the contents of her purse which she supposedly dropped in the hall. Antonio offers help, but all she wants is to get into her room, which she thinks she can do via Antonio's balcony. For me this was a great lead in to the scene that follows it. It turns me on to watch one woman dominate another like a man, especially when both women are as fantastic looking as these two. Now, just like any kind of sexually oriented domination, this kind of thing can easily go too far (See The Violation of Kate Frost by JM production for examples of this unfortunate phenomenon--or don't see it, as you wish). I'm happy to report that that was not the case here. An excellent, short scene that leads in nicely to the main event to come.

The Girl
I've seen Kate Frost before, and she's a cutie. She doesn't have the most amazing face I've ever seen, but she definitely has a sexy way about her, and she's got a damn nice little body. Besides that, she's a performer (as are all of the women in this movie, I dare say), and the thought of her teaming up with Rocco has me practically creaming my pants with anticipation. Here she's wearing a full body, gray latex suit. Underneath that is some very skimpy rubber underwear that gets stretched around all kinds of unmentionables during this scene. Kate has blonde hair here, although I don't think she's a natural blonde. She looks damn good, regardless, and after watching her little "bad girl" punishment, I'm more than ready for the first proper sex scene of this "highly charged erotic experience" to get underway.

The Action
Rocco comes in the room, in the interest of giving comfort. After initially being rebuffed, Kate suddenly turns extremely submissive. She assumes her previous position of head on the ground, butt in the air--wiggling her ass and inviting Rocco to do his thang. Interlude: As Antonio finishes up with Louisa (Kate), he finds the stylized "F" from the DVD he watched in the form of a pin on her now cumsoaked outfit. They talk and Antonio tells her he is very impressed and is interested in pursuing a business relationship. Leslie is not interested in Antonio's pending fetish line of clothing, as she thinks it's too much for the present conservative fashion scene. Apparently Leslie and Antonio used to be an item, and Antonio seems to be allowing his work to be influenced by his personal interests in S&M. In any case, she refuses to sell his line, and in the car afterward, he confides to his assistant Manuel (Manuel Ferrara) that she always says, "no"--but she'll come around.

At the Fashionistas offices, the employees are thrilled that Antonio will be gracing them with his presence. Before he does we see some day to day work at the office where Chelsea (Chelsea Blue) is having some trouble with the latex-wear on her pet Rebecca (Gia). Jesse (Belladonna), playing the quiet geeky type to a tee, is berated by the boss, Helena, for not dressing sharp enough. Belladonna totally looks and plays the part here, and churns up all the more anticipation on my part when I think of the outrageous sexual feats that are no doubt in store for this cute thing. They establish that it was Jesse who put together the DVD that so intrigued Antonio, and Helena planned Antonio's little fuck fest with Louisa (Kate Frost) to seal the deal. Jesse points out that the deal isn't sealed yet and she's working on another DVD for the "Chameleons" line of clothing that she wants to show Antonio. Helena hints at a less than professional relationship with Jesse when she takes her chin in her hand and says, "I work you so hard, don't I Jesse?"

Antonio and Manuel arrive. He praises the DVD, but Helena takes credit for it with Jesse's ok. Jesse is clearly happy that Antonio liked her ideas. In Helena's office, Antonio points out the subliminal bondage image that he saw on the DVD to Helena, which she is surprised (and not too happy) to see. Helena sees Jesse going home and shoots her a dirty look. Antonio, who is unaware of all this arranges to come back to the office tomorrow.

Belladonna deserves special mention. For the benefit of the uninitiated, there is no woman in today's mainstream porn (or arguably in all of porn history) who has more passion for extremely hardcore sex than Belladonna. Buttman has, in a remarkable convalescence of story, casting, and timing managed to create an unprecedented air of sexual anticipation, and from there he builds the tension even more with one of the best sexual tease sequences I have ever seen...

The Action
In silence, Belladonna looks at the mirror. She looks at herself, and plays with her mouth. She ties her hair in a pony tail and looks at her profile, allowing her sweatshirt to ride up her navel and exposing her flat tummy. There is a large video monitor and entertainment center beside the mirror, which she goes over to and turns on. As she lights two candles, an image appears on the monitor, and a haunting, sexual, musical thrumming is heard. Candles lit, Belladonna goes back to the mirror. We cut to the monitor and see a figure covered in some sort of black satin cloth. While Belladonna strips slowly in front of the mirror, we see a woman's hand intrude on the monitor and start to spank that cloth covered ass. Belladonna, in black panties and bra puts on some high heels as the ass in the monitor gets freed of its satin confines. It has a jeweled buttplug in it, looking like the end is so small it could slip inside at any moment. Back in the apartment, Belladonna starts dancing rhythmically to this amazingly well chosen music as she watches the monitor. Again, her face is slapped, and the look on her face is somewhere between exhilaration and defiance. It's amazing, and impossible to describe. The real Belladonna continues to dance, staring transfixed at herself undergoing a sadomasochistic, bondage session that includes nipple twisting, hair pulling and hard spanking while being tied to the red hooded platform we saw earlier on Antonio's Fashionistas promo DVD. The solo section of this scene ends as the music fades to silence, with Belladonna in bondage being severely spanked.

The Gist - MLyons
The psychological aspects of this scene are astounding, and it is executed flawlessly. This is the best tease scene I have ever seen, and the effect it had on me and my wife was due to a number of different factors. Whereas showing one or the other of the two major sequences in this scene would have had little impact on me on its own, the dynamic between them when combined into a whole greater than the sum of its parts was indescribable. Beyond those considerations are the more obvious factors. Belladonna is an athletic, immensely flexible, and beautiful woman and she proves it here. The music is perfectly written and delivered; and the editing, lighting, camera work and direction are fantastic. This sequence won the 2003 AVN award for best tease scene, and I make no bones about endorsing that decision--it deserves that and more.  This scene does everything it can to generate anticipation for what this film will eventually deliver, and it does it better than any single tease sequence I have ever witnessed.

My wife thought this sequence was flawless, and had she made any kind of effort, she would have orgasmed in no time flat watching it. Her single thought on the subject afterward was, "GUHH!!!" I think that says it all.

The Gist - MLyons
For me, this was a fantastic scene. It was dominant, intense, and built up to a truly eye popping climax. The only time my attention waned was during the extended breast attention that Belladonna gave Taylor. Otherwise though, freakishly huge dildo and all, this was masterfully paced, wonderfully executed and very hot action that fit completely within the scheme of the story.

My wife loved the scene up to the point where "huge-ass glassy" made its appearance. She liked the breast attention more than I did, but I liked the end more than she did. She didn't mind the huge dildo as long as Belladonna was the one working it. When Taylor gave it to her, it looked to my wife that Belladonna was in too much pain and my wife immediately stopped enjoying it. I could certainly understand where she was coming from, but I liked the whole thing despite myself. Regardless, my wife was very clear--she loved the scene--two fantastic looking ladies getting it on in an unusually rough way.

Interlude: Helena, after fucking up Jesse's ass--but good--catches a glimpse of the bondage image that was subliminally inserted on the DVD for Antonio. A pale skinned, blonde model named Monica (Sharon Wild) is there to assist them in this voyage of body discovery. Monica (Sharon) is looking quite yummy in her black latex one piece. There is a bit of an argument over what's trashy and what's elegant and what America is ready for. Antonio is left to work it out with Eddie (a gay man who wears a necklace that says, "Bitch") while Helena returns to her office and Lisa (Tricia Devereaux) walks over to Jesse's desk while she's dutifully working. Jesse has several painted Easter eggs on her desk, and Lisa asks why they're there, as Easter was "two weeks ago." She and Jesse start to discuss the different meanings of the phrase "Easter Egg," especially in reference to hidden content on DVD discs. Antonio joins the conversation by explaining that it's a surprise--but "maybe you can find it if you look in the right place." Jesse and Antonio talk for a brief time about Easter eggs, and armless bondage sculptures that Jesse likes to look at while she works. Antonio is then called back to work by the "Bitch" and Jesse is clearly excited that she has made a connection with Antonio. In the interest of personal experience, Antonio is convinced to borrow a pair of latex pants from a shop called Razzle, down the street. He does this, and changes. Jesse says goodnight and exchanges a look with Antonio, while the rest of the girls play around with Antonio's new pants. Finally, everyone but Helena supposedly goes home. She wants to take him to an underground S&M club the following weekend, again in the interest of research, where they will be able to show off their new fashions. She also baits him with the new Chameleons promo DVD that he will be given soon. Antonio wants to put his other pants back on before he leaves, but he finds that they have been taken. As he wanders around looking for them, he comes upon an interesting sight:

It's yet another fantastic scene to end a unique film that is filled with them.

Aside from the obvious lack of interest in the deep throat, Mrs. Lyons was likewise engrossed in this scene. PRODUCTION QUALITY:
This movie really shines in terms of production quality. The camera work was extremely good, the lighting did justice to the sex and the costumes and makeup were top notch. Belladonna's tease sequence specifically was so well put together in terms of camera, editing, music, and narrative construction that it even merits comparison with some bigger budget mainstream efforts. This scene, and the subsequent encounter between her and Taylor St. Claire stand as some of the best produced sex footage I've ever seen. It is completely re-watchable, and offers much much more than just wack off material. It offers a fascinating, artistic look into a lifestyle and the accompanying extreme human sexual impulses that few of us have experienced. The music especially deserves special mention, as it was extremely effective in terms of adding to the sexual heat, as well as conveying the S&M theme's dark underlying nature. My wife wasn't as in love with the music as I was; especially in Belladonna's scenes as to her it conveyed an aire of the whispering commentator saying, "What is the daredevil going to do next!!!" She was certainly right about that, but I found it damn exciting. By mainstream standards, this film still lacks in overall impact, as the lighting especially could have been much more interesting. By the standards of porn, however, and the budgets that porn producers are generally constrained to work within, the movie's production elements were absolutely outstanding.

DVD QUALITY:
Evil Angel has established a very good reputation with the quality of their DVDs.  This one is no exception.  Aside from the very special packaging (which includes a great layout, some fantastic stills from the movie, and a quote from--among others--some dufus internet reviewer named MLyons), the movie, its extras and its menus are presented extremely well on three dual layer discs.  The picture and sound quality of the DVD is exceptionally good, and completely worthy of this fine feature.

DVD EXTRAS:
There is a very large number of extras included on this multi-disc set, and all of them are first rate.  There are no less than four photo galleries for those who like them.  There is extensive biographical and videographic information for most of the cast of the film.  There is the usual compliment of Evil Angel extras which include a fetish menu, a cast list by scene, biographical information on John Stagliano, as well as information on his ring of websites.  Additionally, there is website information for many of the company's the produced props, art and music in the movie.  This is only the beginning though, as the real extra content includes a bloopers real, a very interesting video segment that shows some of the casting and pre-production process, and a fun little sequence entitled, "You Know Ass?".  There is an extended cut of the opening fashion show, and some video of the many photo shoots that occurred throughout the process of making the film.  The three main events, however, are the 45 minutes of extra sex footage, the 110 minute "making of" featurette, and the running audio commentary by John Stagliano, Tricia Devereaux, Belladonna, and Taylor St. Claire.  The "making of" feature is very interesting, and does a good job of showing both the grueling process that went into making this film, and some glimpses into the personalities of those who made it.  I really enjoyed it, and there are some damn funny and enjoyable moments that not only give me insight into the film's production, but will enhance my enjoyment of the film with future viewings.  The running commentary, for me, was even better than the making of featurette.  The commentary was very personal at times, and I get much more from this kind of interaction than I do seeing the mechanics of prop manipulation and camera setups that the "making of" offered.  They took two breaks during the commentary (with some clumsy sound editing), but they were short and overall, it was a pleasure to listen to.  Finally, if you haven't already passed out from exhaustion watching all 4 hours and 40 minutes of this very special film, there's 45 minutes more sex just waiting for you on the extras disc.  The footage included is from all the major sex scenes of the movie, with a few little tid-bits besides.  The best stuff, in my opinion, comes from Rocco's scene with Taylor, Friday and Sharon, but there's still plenty of other things worthy of attention here.  The extras on this set alone will take a few hours to get through, and if you like the film, they are well worth the time spent.

STORY & ACTING:
I normally don't comment on plot and acting in an adult feature, as the nature of the story often has little to do with the heat of the sex. This movie is quite an exception for four reasons. The first was the script itself. Although it was certainly simple, it provides a good backdrop for a surprisingly complex exploration of character that has much to do with the sexual scenarios we see in the film. The second reason is Rocco Siffredi, who while lacking in acting talent, once again proves why he is considered a master sexual performer. Third is Taylor St. Claire, who probably has the biggest speaking role in the movie. Although her acting faltered at times, she established an extremely strong character, and was a master dominant besides being amazingly sexy. Her performance was exceptional, and she should be commended for her work. Finally however, this movie truly succeeded because of Belladonna. She was breathtaking in all respects. At first glance, she seems like a second stringer to Taylor who had a much more vocal role. However, it is difficult to explain the impact that her mere presence had on the film from the very first subliminal frame that Antonio discovers. When we see her in the office later she is completely believable as a small, cute, quiet girl who has some seriously dark secrets. Those two seemingly disparate images combined to awake in me a fearful excitement--an anticipation for the inexplicable things I might see this character put herself through. What's more, Belladonna delivered on that promise. Her dichotomy of personality was fascinating, and ultimately completely believable. Her performance, both in terms of sex and character, was simply astounding--an absolutely gorgeous creature, without whom this movie would have lacked almost all of its deeper psycho-sexual impact. Bravo, Belladonna, and congratulations.  

OVERALL:
Now that we've examined exhibit E in minute detail, I will say with some amount of certainty that my hypothesis was correct. This was indeed not just another "Buttman" movie. I don't know what else to say that I haven't said already. This movie is most assuredly not for everyone, as it includes incredibly hot and hard sex, with themes of deep throat, gagging, slapping, and hair pulling reminiscent of some of Rocco Siffredi's hardest efforts. What's more it includes some astoundingly authentic sadomasochistic sequences that will likely both arouse and disturb. However, this movie is nothing if not erotic. It may not be erotic in the way that many people would like or expect, but there is non-stop, frenetic sex, S&M, and domination peopled by simply gorgeous performers who never show signs of boredom or slowing. Stagliano's wife, Tricia Devereaux, has stated that this film and the sex in it is the result of a passion they have harbored inside them for years. This passion for the subject matter is completely evident, as they have created something very special. It's a truly groundbreaking effort and will most likely mar my enjoyment of the more commonplace porn offerings for a long time to come. Largely because of the frequency of the deep throat action, and her lack of attraction for the male talent, my wife didn't like this one quite as much as I did. Despite those detractors, however she certainly agrees that it was an incredibly sexy and groundbreaking adult film. My wife is unlike a lot of women, though--and enjoys hard dominant sex, and that should certainly be taken into account in deciding whether or not to bring this home to your significant other. Finally, my wife and I both agree, Belladonna is a force to be reckoned with, and in no adult film or video has that been more evident than in this one. John Stagliano once again proves why he is one of the most respected men in the industry. I really don't think I'm overstating it when I say that this film is erotic, complex, innovative, incredibly sexy, and in short: unforgettable.
