Initial Expectations: This version of Dracula won a ton of European awards which gives me good hopes for it.

Initial Reaction: It appears to have a very high budget but feels highly edited.

Who Should Watch It : Fans of classic porn and high production values and people with short attention spans.

Who Should Avoid It: Anybody who wants decent dubbing in foreign films and complete sex scenes

Audio /Video Quality: The audio is very clear, although when it’s dubbed it should be. The dubbing, however, is hilarious. I couldn’t hold back the laughter during the sex scenes. Sadly, I don’t think it was meant to be so funny. The video also looks good and is a lot better than I expected.

Music: There isn’t much music during the sex scenes, but the music during the rest of the movie is similar to what you’d find in the 1930s monster movies. It fits the feature very nicely and continued to give me hope for the feature throughout it.

Menus: The menus are extremely basic and extremely dark but get the job done. The only submenus are a chapter menu and a language menu.

The Feature: Although I’ve seen a few mainstream movie versions of Dracula , I’ve never read Bram Stoker’s original. What I do remember from all of those movies and from what I heard about Bram Stoker’s original was quite different from the plot in this version. The only plot thread to survive is that even death can’t stop love, but that’s lost after the first ten minutes. This time, Vlad Dracul and Elizabeth are completely in love but Vlad has to fight the Turks who kill him. After his death, the Sultan throws Queen Elizabeth in a torture chamber. She can’t take the acts she sees there and gives in to the sultan, who screws her above where Vlad was buried. Under Sultan’s rule, sex runs rampant through the kingdom, but that doesn’t mean we get to see an entire sex scene. Instead there’s just small snippets of scenes that rarely last over ten seconds. Elizabeth can’t take it that long and commits suicide.

Over 200 years later, a doctor is summoned to a home where a woman has two bite marks on her neck. Due to their mother’s condition, her children decide that she shouldn’t be brought along on their trip to Romania to claim their family’s estate. After the three sisters and their cousin leave for Romania, mother awakens and spews pea soup on the doctor. In Romania, the others find that things might not be as easy as they thought, with the exception of getting laid. Unbeknownst to the sisters, their cousin is scheming with the carriage driver (Ron Jeremy) to get the entire estate himself by killing the three sisters. What their cousin and the driver don’t expect is the bodies of their victims to disappear or to find a vampire on their search for the missing body. From then on, it’s a vampire movie. People meet, they fuck, and then somebody turns into a vampire and kills whoever isn’t. It’s almost like there are two different movies here, but they don’t mesh together enough for them to feel right. By the time Dracula finally appears (in the last two minutes of the movie), the only reason you’re happy he and Elizabeth are together again is so the movie will end.

The sex feels a lot like the sex in classic porn. It often blends in with the plot and is fairly chopped up. The scenes are also extremely short and often under five minutes in length. On the plus side, the women are almost all real. It’s a nice change to see a porno where the women aren’t obviously altered. Sadly, the dubbing takes whatever erotic nature was in these scenes away. It would have been sexier with the original audio track and the guys from Mystery Science Theater 300 providing an English commentary.

Although it has a good start and obviously a high budget, Dracula falls apart quickly. Of course, there’s the obvious lack of Dracula in the movie, but that’s only the start of it. The movie feels very chopped up and I suspect it’s been highly edited. The plot flows horribly and makes it so you don’t really care about anything but watching people fuck. The sex scenes feel like somebody threw the original film in with their nightly frozen Margarita as they made it and whatever survived made it into the movie, sometimes in whatever order they were found. It’s too bad, because it’s obvious that somebody did care about it, due to the details such as great makeup jobs and excellent sets.

Extras: Not a single one, unless you consider having both English and French language tracks available an extra.

Raincoat Factor: Medium low

Overall: Currently, Dracula can be found online for between $14.50 and $22 with most stores offering it for around $20. Although the transfer is very good, the movie itself lacks and there are no extras. If you really feel the need to watch it, rent it first.

Note to Plum: Although it appears you paid some great attention to the video transfer, the audio dubbing goes a long way to the problems in this DVD. It’s great to see you releasing some higher budget porn and Euro porn, but I’m sure you have better stuff than this.
