The Technical Stuff

Audio /Video Quality: As usual with Digital Playground, the technical aspects are extremely impressive. The audio is very well balanced, and came across very clear without any background noises to interfere with it. The video also shows some very nice care, starting with being done in anamorphic widescreen. There’s a bit of grain here and there in the movie, but it always feels like it’s there on purpose to give the movie a slightly different artistic feel.

Music: The music also shows a lot of care. It rests very nicely in the background, and changes in feel each time to fit the scene. It never interferes with the action, and almost always strengthens the scenes.

Menus: The main menu starts out with some very nice clips from the movie working into a still with a bit of the action flashing by in the background. It’s nicely done, and definitely gave a good first impression. Sadly, the chapter menu is still very generic, and lets you choose a scene based on just a chapter number and a small clip from the chapter.

The Feature

With Deeper, Robby D goes with more of a vignette style feel. The scenes are all independent of each other, but all have a fairly heavy artistic feel that I think will remind many of the camera work he did for Celeste’s movies. The main thing which sets Deeper apart from Celeste’s movies is that here you get to hear the performers.

Scene 1 - Sophia Santi and Scott Nails

Knockout brunette Sophia starts things kneeling in front of Scott wearing an animal print bikini and rubbing at his cock on a piece of glass he’s holding in front of his naked body. I’m really surprised with how much I enjoyed this scene. Here, however, it ends up as a great tease sequence. It has an artistic feel with flashes that reminded me of the old style films, and Robby’s camera work was very nicely done. This might be the best scene lasting under three minutes without a pop shot or any physical contact that you’re going to find for a very long time.

Scene 2 - Roxy Deville and Scott Nails

The next scene starts out with the action on a plasma TV. Scene 3 - Faith and Jerry

Faith starts things out just as a dark sepia-toned head watching herself in a dark dress with Jerry. This is a pretty good scene that’s a little more artistic and not quite as hot as the others.

Scene 4 - Jessi Summers and Scott Nails

Scene 5 - Jayna Oso, Jenna Presley, Kaiya Lynn, and Marco Duato

Jayna, Jenna, and Kaiya each start things out on a couch by a picture of Jesse Jane in a red and black corset diddling themselves. Marco appears to kiss and lick Jesse’s picture before giving each of the girls a little tongue and finger action down below. This is a very different scene. Marco takes on all three of the girls, but never at the same time. It’s something that if I heard about before, I’d probably be very negative about as I’ve rarely seen scenes where the action flips between couples work well. Those type of scenes always seem to lose chemistry as the action flips between couples, but that doesn’t happen here. There’s a continual feel to the scene between Marco, the picture, and the girls, and it works very well. The other thing that worked very well for me was the music. It has a vocal background to it that really came out for me, and it seemed absolutely perfect for the scene. This scene worked remarkably well for me.

Scene 6 - Charloette Stokely and Scott Nails

I also can’t deny that Robby did his job amazingly well to get a viewer worked up like that and still have them enjoying the scene. Scene 8 - Sativa Rose and Richard Raymond

The bright side of this scene is seeing Sativa do anal. With that ass I can’t help but hope to see more of it in the future, and if she’s willing to do it for Robby with her head buried under a bed I hope she’ll be willing to do it on top of the bed as well. This is a riskier scene and I’m glad that Robby isn’t always playing it safe, but at the same time the scene didn’t do a lot for me.

Deeper is one of those pornos that make you wonder what the heck the director was thinking. I mean, doesn’t Robby D know that artistic porn flicks are supposed to be cold and fairly boring? From the looks of Deeper, he apparently didn’t get that memo. Although a couple of the scenes didn’t work quite as well as the others sexually, the entire movie had a strong sense of style and art which rarely interfered with the sexuality of the scenes. In a couple places, it even strengthened the scenes. Roxy and Scott’s scene is good enough to make Deeper worth the rental price alone, while Marco’s scene with Jayna, Jenna, and Kaiya took a style of scenes that I normally hate and made it hot and engaging. The only scenes that didn’t work that well for me were Sativa’s closing scene and Faith’s scene with Jerry, which had dark feelings that I just couldn’t get into too well. All that said, Deeper lets Robby try something a bit different with a more artistic movie. Although how well the scenes worked for me varied from scene to scene, I can’t have a single reservation about watching it. Robby shows a great artistic eye through the movie and isn’t afraid to take a few risks. He also doesn’t lose the sexuality among the artistic visions, which is something that seems very rare in this type of movie. If you like porn on the more artistic side of things, make sure you get Deeper.

Currently, many of Digital Playground’s bigger releases can be found online for between about $18 and $28 with a few stores offering them for under $20. This one’s well worth the money. The sex is artistic, but it rarely interferes with the passion in the scenes. The technical aspects are a little artistic, but shows some nice care and never comes across as sloppy. There’s also a bit of effort put into extras, which is very nice to see from Digital Playground. This is a hot DVD that shows plenty of care.

Note to Digital Playground: I hope you have Robby D do more movies with this style! It was also very nice to see a behind the scenes featurette again.
