Cherry Pie (Sin City) Review

Initial Expectations: The only other Sin City DVD I’ve seen is Babewatch, which left much to be desired. Although I have hopes for the movie, I don’t expect much of a DVD.

Initial Reaction: It’s kind of fun but nothing special.

Audio /Video Quality: I don’t think anything has been done since the original VHS release as the video quality is VHS quality at best. The audio synchs pretty well but a lot of the dialogue is kind of hard to understand.

Music: The music is your typical porno music. It’s way too loud for many of the scenes.

Disc Problems: Once again, Sin City has no time code on the movie. Sin City also seems to think that it’s a good idea to have mandatory phone sex ads and a mandatory commercial for their web site before the main menu.

Review: Wow. My 100th review. I have to admit that I never really thought I’d get this far. Thank you, Steph and Drew for letting me. Anyway, it only seemed right to watch a DVD with one of my favorite performers in it, namely Kylie Ireland. Ever since I first saw Kylie on a box cover something inside me knew that she was going to be worth watching. To finish off my first hundred reviews, I watched Cherry Pie, which started things off for Kylie.

Cherry Pie is one of those mid - 1990s pornos that doesn’t really try to be anything but fun. Better yet, it’s a porno parody, which I almost always enjoy. In this case, it’s a parody of the old Archie comic strip, with Jonathan Morgan in the lead role. Jonathan is perfect for the role. He’s got just enough screwball in him to have the laughs where they should be. The cast is rounded out with Nick East as Juggs Jones, Gerry Pike as Reggie, Eva Tiffany as Veronica, Jenna Jameson as Betty Blueballs, and Kylie Ireland as Serena the Teenage Witch. The story revolves around the Liverdale gang getting back together about a year after graduating. Betty and Veronica have decided that it’s time to quit sharing Archie, so he must choose between them. What they didn’t know was that Archie found himself a girlfriend named Mildred (Kim Chambers) at college.

Of course, Archie has to tell about how he and Mildred first hooked up. It’s a pretty average scene that isn’t helped too much by Kim’s infection of Beachballitis, which we all know causes women’s chests to swell to dangerous sizes. There is some pretty good chemistry and Kim has some good enthusiasm which help the scene out a lot. Betty and Veronica agree that Mildred must be stopped and agree to work together to rid Archie of Mildred.

While Betty and Veronica plan their next move, Archie catches up with Juggs and Reggie. Reggie tells them about how he met Serena the Teenage Witch. Kylie does a great job here showing the enthusiasm and enjoyment that she’s so well noted for. She puts a lot of fun into the scene doing such things as a magic trick to make Reg’s cock disappear. The scene would have been a lot better if not for the lighting. The entire scene is shot with a red light shining on everything. It’s okay for part of a scene, but for a whole scene it wasn’t a good thing.

Archie goes upstairs to check on Betty and Veronica who were waiting for him. Not to pleasure him, but to show him what he’s missing by dating Mildred. Needless to say, with Jenna and Eva working on each other, this is a very good lesbian scene complete with a little bit of toy usage. It’s further helped by being early enough in Jenna’s career to be before her surgery addiction. I admit that Jenna looks better now (as in Dream Quest and Hell on Heels than she did a couple years ago (as in Flashpoint. It still doesn’t compare to how she looked early in her career. Throughout the scene, Archie watches from around the corner trying to restrain his cock from pulling him into the room. After watching this scene, I think Archie must have some kind of mutant power to resist such temptation. He is a comic character, after all.

While Archie pushes his mutant power to the limit, Mildred shows up and meets Juggs and Reggie. By the time Archie comes back down to tell Reggie what he just saw, Juggs and Mildred have retired to the back bedroom. Mildred is a demanding woman and makes Juggs take his crown off so she can fuck him without laughing. It’s a good scene that’s helped out some by both Kim and Nick enjoying themselves.

Unfortunately for Archie, Mildred runs off with Juggs. To cheer himself up, he offers to take Betty and Veronica down to Pop’s for a soda, but they’ve got something better in mind. Archie has to choose between them, and we all know there’s only one way for him to make up his mind. I believe it’s spelled ‘Menage a trois’. This is a really good threesome, mostly because everybody works off everybody else throughout the scene. There’s barely a moment when one of them is by themselves. Archie still gets his way in the end giving both girls a nice trip to pop’s shot instead of the soda fountain. With girls like Jenna and Eva, Archie needs time to think things over. When he decides on Serena the Teenage Witch, I think he’d rather have Wolverine’s mutant healing power by the time Betty and Veronica get through with him.

Although it’s no great movie, Cherry Pie is fun. Of course, I remember the old Archie comic strips. If you’re not familiar with the Archie strips, you’re probably not going to enjoy it nearly as much as you’ll miss a lot of the humor. The writers did a great job with the casting in Cherry Pie. Eva is the worst cast person, but even she does a good job in her role. Thankfully, Principal Weatherby and Mrs. Grundy are nowhere to be seen!

Extras: The photo gallery is the manual style and contains about thirty pictures. They’re average quality at best and frequently a little below average. There are quite a few trailers including 18 & Awesome, 18 & Anxious, and Just 18 #1 - #4.

Overall: Currently, Cherry Pie can be found online for between $14 and $24 with only a couple stores offering it for under $20. It’s not a great DVD, so if you’re a fan of any of the stars you might want to buy it if you can find it for under $15. Anybody else will definitely want to rent it. The transfer is okay, but I don’t think the original was probably that good, and there isn’t much of anything for extras.

Note to Sin City: If you’d put even a little thought or effort into your DVDs they’d be a lot better. Long before you released this DVD consumers were revolting at Disney for putting mandatory trailers at the start of their DVDs. Why would you think that they would react different to you? Also, from what I understand, it takes virtually no effort to put a time code on a DVD. By not including a time code on your movies it shows a lack of caring about the consumers and also your product. If you don’t care about your products, why should we?
