The Movie |
Car Lot Girls is a poor attempt at a feature adult film from the latter part of the 1970s that is more commonly known as Candi Girls. Despite Carter Stevens having the directorial credit on the Car Lot Girls titled edition of the film, the film was actually directed by, and written by, John Christopher. Car Lot Girls was shot in New Jersey and features an excellent cast of adult film actors and actresses.
Where Car Lot Girls goes wrong is the plot is essentially non-existent for most of the film with a subplot that shows up at the end becoming essentially the main plot for the entire film. Car Lot Girls chronicles the antics of the salesmen at Courtesy Motors, owned by Larry (Carter Stevens) and Ben (Herschel Savage), who end up running afoul of mobsters Luigi (Bobby Astyr) and Baby Tony (Ron Hudd).
Car Lot Girls comes across more as a wall-to-wall sex film than the feature film that it seems to be trying to be. The mob subplot enters at the end of the film and ends almost as quickly as it shows up. Other than the mob subplot, there really isn't any more plot in the film, which is too bad. The cast in the film is excellent, with acting talent, and could have made a much better film had they been given more material to work with.
The sex scenes in the film aren't bad, however, the cheap and rushed nature of the film brings the entire production down. A truck in a field is used for more than one scene, that happen at different times, without ever moving. The viewer is left with the feeling that the film never ended up getting the budget that it needed and proceeded anyway cutting production of anything that didn't ultimately lead to a sex scene. As a result, Car Lot Girls isn't a recommended film.
The Edition |
Golden Age Media hasn't done a great job with their DVD release of Car Lot Girls. Car Lot Girls was shot on film and it looks like Golden Age Media has used a 3/4” video master for this release. Car Lot Girls is presented in the Academy aspect ratio of 1.33:1 in 480i. The image contains print damage and artifacts. There is also tracking issues from the video source that are present in the release. The colors in the film look too light.
Car Lot Girls is presented with an English Dolby Digital 2.0 monaural audio track. The audio contains a hiss. The music can also be louder than the dialog, which can make some of the dialog hard to discern. The audio presented here is serviceable but far from excellent.
Golden Age Media has included two bonus sex scenes for extras on the release. There is Ultra Girls loop 5 “Serena” with Serena, Kathy Kaufman, and Mike Ranger that was also used in Golden Age Media owner Ed DePriest's 1979 loop carrier Getting Off. There is also a scene from Anthony Spinelli's 1980 classic Aunt Peg with Serena, Juliet Anderson, and Mike Ranger.
Final Thoughts |
Despite the presence of an excellent cast and what could have been an interesting plot line, Car Lot Girls is a disappointing attempt at a feature adult film that in reality is more of a wall-to-wall sex film than a feature. Golden Age Media has done a lackluster job with their DVD release of Car Lot Girls with a video sourced transfer and problems with the audio.
